is the root password the same as one we mention whilst signing up? I can login to the server manager but, not via root @ ssh

You get the root pass emailed to you when you install an OS onto the server

So whats the console that comes up when I ssh to the server?

Does anyone know what sort of servers these are? Are they standard 1U size?

@1e10 OVH has a lot of their own R&D, these cheap servers are most likely bare motherboards on trays:
also all liquid-cooled. Only with this density such prices are possible.
    https://lafibre.info/ovh-datacenter/data-center-ovh-roubaix-2/
the DC layout is novel too:
    https://lafibre.info/ovh-datacenter/data-center-ovh-roubaix-4/
and their DCs are sometimes even made of shipping containers:

they use those intergrated intel boards for the atom i think which are dirt cheap. like £70?

  • J1021J1021 Member

@rm_ Hmm, my observium installation reports a 'fan speed'. Will these type of servers have fans?

You call this dirt cheap, for 5 EUR/month? :) How many months until the board + HDD + RAM + power + BW is paid off? :)

If I remember right, the server I had with them earlier used this motherboard: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-board-dn2800mt.html
You can check your motherboard model by installing and running "dmidecode".

The motherboard in the cheap atom's are DN2800MT

Well does it show any real RPM? My Kimsufi Atom had zero on all RPM counters.
Also funnily enough the HDD temperature went all the way down to 10-11 C in winter, and up to 28-30 C in summer time.

  • rds100rds100 Member

These motherboards are fanless. One could attache a fan, but why? The motherboard itself can work fanless (although Intel does list some thermal design requirements in it's documentation).
My guess is that each individual server doesn't have a fan, but the whole chassis is ventilated.
And no, these are not water cooled. Their higher end servers are probably water cooled.

So even with those tiny motherboards do they still receive 3 electrical supplies as advertised on the website?

Also an IPv6 /128 is advertised?

Maybe I am expecting too much for £5 monthly!

This is the temperature graph for my server. Not sure what it is measuring.

Do they have to though? Those are servers without a case so I would assume the heat actually goes out relatively easily. But then again I have to confess I have never seen server so dense in real life before so probably I don't really know how hot it is like to be there.

    Jack said: I got a /64?

Ya, I think my netmask is 64 as well...which means....18,446,744,073,709,552,000 IP addresses??????

  • J1021J1021 Member

So does VPS Proxmox work on these KS-1 servers? They have a template for it.

  • J1021J1021 Member

Jack said: It will work for OpenVZ yes... you'll need to NAT the v4 address though.

I've no experience with this, damn. I don't even want VMs, I just want an easy way to install Minimal Debian distro rather than all the crap OVH seem to have configured on it.

  • earlearl Member

So if you tunnel the IP from OVH to another server does it also give the tunneled server DDoS? kinda like the service that Buyvm offers?

  • earlearl Member

Maybe that's why they limit the amount of v6 per server now..

What crap? OVH's Debian was pretty minimal, certainly nothing out of the ordinary compared to templates you find on VPS providers. They may have their own monitoring added to crontab, but that's easy to comment out. To be honest I don't care either way, I have my own script to clean out things like Bind and Samba and whatnot.

@1e10 Xtightvnc <- you want to imply this is also OVH's doing? And then one half of those are from you running a graphical environment on the server, another sizable chunk is just the kernel threads (stuff in square brackets). One thing I can agree with, is if you didn't install apache but had it running by default, then yeah like 15 apache processes is a bit too much. One way or the other, if you need an HTTP server, my recommendation is always Lighttpd.

already 4 days. no reply at all. IDs submitted for nothing.

  • @rds100 @1e10 I have an OVH VPS and the Debian template is a minimal build. is it different to the kimsufi build?
