Why VPS for backup?
There is like internxt, Amazone Drive or box also available for backups. Even I have my own backup storage website. Still you guys using VPS for backups why?
Maybe for borg.
Not everyone wants to toss their data to Amazon or Google.
A storage VPS is a great choice for backups
In addition, you can set up things as you want and you're not sharing your data with some company
Yeah, a lot of the "cheap" storage things require you to install some software to access storage. Not only would that be incredibly inconvenient when you need to restore something, it means you now need to trust that their software doesn't do anything malicious.
When there are literally hundreds of open standards for transferring files, any mandatory client for a proprietary storage protocol is a huge red flag.
I don't think you have no any knowledge abour Zero-Knowledge Protection, End-to-end encryption or cloud files distributions. Please google it, and when you sharing your data whos are specialized companies - they make sure your data security and no loose. On ther hand VPS companies aren't design for backups and many vps companies won't secure your data loose 100%. - If your backups are importent for you. You shoould go for specialized people on data backups.
Look! Im not saying all data security or backup companies are equal or 100% honest. But it's way better you hire a plumber for your plumbing.. not an electrician. For backup storage you should go for an Backup Storage company and reads their T&C maybe talk to them. Clear your quarries and only when you are satisfied then go for it.
But VPS backups is not the solution.
For someone like you who is supposedly so informed about and big on data security, the https link that you advertise in your signature,
doesn't lead anywhere (and the http link just leads to ads)
Right -- we'll follow what you say
But hey the storage on Blazedrive yada yadaa… is free. Why complain??
Do you? Do you even really know what you're talking about? Hint: ZKP may sound impressive to you but is little to do with storage.
Cloud storage as a paid service means two things, (a) storing data safely, and (b) doing it in a profitable way.
(a) translates to having redundant storage, preferably in >= 2 geographically different regions and preferably with different providers, and (b) translates to doing it efficiently (as in "preferably cheaper than your competitors").
"redundant" is THE factor that makes your service both (hopefully) safe and financially attractive. Just slap Raid 5 or 6 on your drives and the day your business will dive will come. Use Raid 1 and your costs rise significantly and painfully; use Raid 10 and it will be more attractive for your customers but way less attractive or even prohibitively costly for you. So enter erasure coding, the best (but very rarely used) schemes of which will be relatively cheap (roughly similar to Raid 6 costs) and similarly safe/redundant plus you escape resilvering hell.
Plus, "paid service" adds whole layers of problems like e.g. needing secure interfaces to/for the users/customers. And as it just so happens, some of those layers not only massively add complexity (read, lack of safety and security) but also are very attractive attack surfaces.
That alone, i.e. not using a cloud service but doing it yourself, tremendously decreases risks and, if done properly increases reliability.
TL;DR Building a solid solution with multiple (good) VPS and proven solid building blocks probably won't be cheaper but will be safer and more reliable than a cloud storage service.
@angstrom is right and you are wrong.
I have yet to see in the settings for any program, "use specialized people".
Also, I know English isn't your first language, but a spellchecker built into the browser can really help your posts. I just imagine so many bugs created from typos that it hurts credibility to being " specialized".
It's moments like this I wonder why there isn't a  emoji yet.
any news?
I'm still clearing my quarries, sorry.
Sorry to comment to this old topic. But I have a domain in SmallWeb (acquired by Nexus Bytes) but don't know how to transfer out. I made a ticket but after ~12 hours no response. Do you know how to contact to them? Thanks.
@Jord
Wait at least 72 hours before coming here to cry.
Imagine support not responding within 12 hours on Sunday night.
Outrageous!
@bdl @JabJab Thanks. I did not realize that it is still early morning in US. Just a bit worried about my service.
@Jord Thanks for responding. Have a nice day!
Hello dear LETERS, thank you for the tag, I belive this has now been resolved
The new version of git er done.
LET er done!
any nexusbytes news?
Used to talk to Jay with some frequency. I've not heard back from him since we moved our NL stuff away from them back in August or whenever. Was just purely a business move, nothing personal.
Hope he's well.
@Jord How is Jay? Is everything ok? Any chances for some offers on Christmas/New year?
20 weeks later and Jay still hasn't found the time to update people?
Well - I really miss the old NexusBytes where you feel secure and safe about whatever you purchase.
Used to have some amount of credits idling there - but it seems that some of them were gone without invoicing record.
Anyway, I still wish @seriesn the best no matter which path he chooses.
Can't understand why @seriesn won't take a few minutes to come and say hello?
I had 2 years of solid service + support with @seriesn nexusbytes but made the switch to Inception hosting this month. I just wish i could continue but things don't look very bright now. Still all good wishes to them
Now that sounds like family, haha.
Evening all, all is well, I hope we can get some nice deals for you soon
but I'm still here working away.
Jay is good too.
