Cloudflare just launched the world's first no-markup domain registrar,

nice.
Better question is how are they going to react when you host something the CEO gets triggered over.
Francisco
Reference?
Last year there was some neonazi website hosted behind them that got in the news a bunch as the new thing to be upset about.
The CEO claims he came into the office angry one day and took them offline for no other reason than not liking them.
He then spent months trying to do media outreach going on about how he shouldn't have done it and CF as a corporation shouldn't be allowed to silence people.
It's a big issue for them since they spend so much time fighting DMCAs on the basis of they don't censor and are just an accelerator.

A problem I see is that they'll concentrate a lot of power (well, they already do if they control your DNS...)

I mean.... are we referring to this one?

So...I signed up for "Early Access" and it put me in Wave 8 (late november) but then I refreshed the page and clicked the signup again and now it says Wave 2 (late october). What the heck?
meh...
Thanks for the heads up. CF is great..
It costs them a few grand a year to be a gTLD registrar, to that end it's maybe a decent marketing campaign.
If they do all the regular domain stuff via API, great.
Someone pays in the end, though.
"You can only transfer domains that are active on Cloudflare"
apart from killing every other registrar, they want all internet traffic transit thru their POPs?
Obviously, its like Scientology, they said on the blog, that everyone should tunnel through them, otherwise they may suffer bad performance.
total bs.
No, thanks. I prefer paying a surcharge for a bit more freedom. They already control a chunk of the Internet that is large enough. Fight the Power!
Nah, just join them. Is easier. I mean unless you do controversial things on your websites.
Nah, just surrender as do with google and M$.
Great Initiave.
Just signed up and got put in Wave 1 "Estimate: Mid-October", i wonder what determines the position, clearly not first come, first served.
Hoping Cloudflare will introduce their broadband and mobile data plan
Supposedly it's how long you have been with Cloudflare...and if you donate to that girls coding.
Yeah, exactly what I thought would happen.
If anyone else joins in against them on the DMCA crap they're screwed. Hell, they might be screwed just over the porn case alone.

Wave 4.
I was hoping they would have a deal on .me renewals, but eh...
Wave 1 as well. I wonder if they`ll allow new registrations or just transfers tho.
Seems like they'll only allow transfers for domains already using their MITM/CDN. Maybe after a while they'll allow new registrations? But I'm not sure they want to attract customers who are NOT going to use their CDN.
From business perspective it’s good for Cloudflare as it will tie people into the model or ecosystem and give them opportunity for an upsell
This looks promising, as long as there is whois privacy for a small fee.
Was looking at Twitter and CEO said it's included free.
I had just switched a .ca domain to Google Domains to get free DDNS and feel safe they'd be around and have good API for Let's Encrypt and CAA DNS features. Now it looks like I can move my Google and Namesilo ones to Cloudflare, assuming they'll support .ca domains and transfers for registrar only without other Cloudflare stuff, all for the best price.
I think Cloudflare is about to get in trouble for effectively killing so many little guys.
You can use Cloudflare as DNS only - simply don't enable it on any record.
