Of all whatever is on a thread spam wise, comment order number is the worst. But hey, this is the way, and it has been for a long time.

next annoying one is best of the best of the beast of the .... well you know what I mean.

@jackb said: Users could just PM the host with their order number, so I'd consider it spam personally.

    +1 :

@MannDude said: Sales threads should sink after X time no matter what in my opinion. :)

Yap, true, agreed on this, but they should also auto-close after 30 days or so.

@jsg said: FWIW: In my opinion the vast majority of "spam" comments (no relevant content and useless to most users) are exactly two types

"comment your order number", "comment 'hottest deal evar'", and the likes
derailing whole threads which do have a relevant for LET topic with "funny" posts (e.g. "reguards", "$7", etc.) or other irrelevant nonsense. Exception: occasional fun/satirical threads as well as an occasional "nonsense" comment, and the cest pit I guess.

Spot on, nice :+1:, alto I like the 7$, debian and funny memes.

    @Arkas

For less spam, cut the double the BS and invoice number from sales threads, and let providers find other ways to engage with their customers ( as this is a human forum, and humans like interaction, or we can all post via GPT-ed scripts from now on? ), let the parties involved to be funny and be free to post mimes or other. Sink the thread in 7 days and auto close it in 30 days, otherwise I really do not see a simple / clean and universal rule for this. - Feel free to enlighten me if I am wrong. :)

For example ( not to encourage spam in anyway)

The BF mega thread was fun and engaging whatever the spam was, I doubt that a silent offer page would have made those that missed the deals in the spam-crowd able to snatch one more.

The THX / Rearguards and bananas/confetti were were awesome, fun as it can be.
The contribution of @fat32 and others was valuable ( ~3.2 Mil views as I recall )

Or LET's take all this out in 2025 see how that will go???

    This is great. thank you.

  • I think a "hide thread" feature would solve the problem for users who look for non-spammy activity in the first page.
IMHO, prohibiting thread-bumping would possibly lead to less giveaways/prizes distributed by providers to members hence less activity on forum. This doesn't necessarily increase quality of posts.

    Just my opinions ;)

  • Spammy or not, closing an active thread before the "competition" finished without warning isn't the best practice.

I get it, but maybe let said threads finish before doing this without warning?

    @Arkas

I totally respect the choice as it cleans up a lot of crap. However, I implore you to reconsider your stance solely for the yearly BF thread.

It's part of LET tradition, a thread where (almost) everything goes. Once a year, total craziness. Like the purge, but better.

Spammy type posts do have a significant impact on the normal communication between users and providers, but "Giveaway" is a very interesting marketing activity that encourages providers.
If only can get rewards by pm to providers, this will completely lose the marketing effect fo providers. It will also greatly reduce the activity of the forum.

If consider setting up a special section for such "Giveaway" posts? make forcing the posts to be automatically closed after 5 or 7 days, and limiting the frequency of providers posting such posts, such as only posting once a month.

PS:I see there is a "giveaways-freebies" section in the forum. Is it possible to allow providers to post a additionally comment getting "giveaways" articles in this section? And set restrictions? Or set up a special section and make it invisible on the home page and in recent discussions.

This thread was created by @Arkas in the spirit of improving our community. I appreciate that.

There is a balance to be found between creating an exciting environment around sales-periods like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, New Years, etc, and reducing the noise on the forum.

We are going to refine this policy as a group and then implement something official when the time is right.

I've updated the name of this thread to reflect that this is a discussion and not an announcement of an official policy change. We are open to feedback on how to find the best common ground outcome.

That said, we are going to be more critical of worthless content inside offer threads that just goes on and on and on. Everyone has to respect the community.

Like some of the other rule changes and whatnot that were promised a couple times and soon to be released? Just make this the official policy till you find time to ,improve’ it. Thanks @Arkas for stepping up, stopping that pointless and useless spam. BF / NY and other official threads obviously could get an exception or permit spam from Nov - Jan, but for heaven’s sake… this change was needed. Those topics / comments neither help the community nor LETs placement on google.

Looks like a political affiliation/view irked then ego boost. Moderation is really needed, they can make decision, but I wish members not to be threatened. Moderators, Administrators too post memes, funny posts, irrelevant comments at time, no one mind that, instead work with them cheerfully, everyone thinks all same, like a forum family without differences. You may even have weighted approach, old threads given lower weightage, show in different page or bottom, or many other ideas given in the forum or mods/admins can decide the best one.

Sometimes you really behave like an asshole. The first time you tried to exert pressure via the painfully stupid stone-age "[do as I wish] to show you have balls" attempt I just rolled my eyes and went on.

Let me help you understand: @Arkas already clearly demonstrated to have balls and big ones by closing multiple RackNerd threads.

Continuing to follow your "orders" either shows that Arkas is very, very patient - even with bullies (you play a similar stupid game with your IPv6 hall of shame which also shows a bully approach) - or, in case he refuses and I hope he does refuse to follow a bully's orders, it shows that you try a poodle vs patient but strong bull game or, in other words, that your balls are too small.

I expressly thank @Arkas again both for closing those threads and for not obeying small ball commands.

You might be surprised how far a friendly, polite "please* goes ...

I'm just sayin the thread ended at the end of the month, so it just seems unfair.

    Was it spammy? Yes.

But let it be grandfathered in until new policy.

    Throwing stuff out there

    • Exclude the offer threads from the front page (not great from provider view and probably need to find a way to continue to incentivize them to come here)
    • Some sort of smart throttle that makes it harder for the offers to keep hitting the front page in short times. Probably need vanilla support
    • PM for the bandwidth, ram, w/e bonus offers
    • Increase the timeout for posting too fast from 5min->30min?
    • Do allow daily post or one post for lifetime of threads for entries to giveaways. Gleam is awful, daily posts can replace gleam. This is puts everyone on a fair level and theres no bonus to talking more, one post and your good to go. Providers can still get a thread bump this way. The thanks system some providers used too also worked nice in the mega thread but it was often hard to find those and doesnt give them the "bump" for marketing.
    • Vanilla have some way for people to filter out specific threads?
    • Hard limit on number of days deal thread can be open
    • Reduce the time of which deal threads can be open

The threads are fun but i also see the problem and would be lying if I didnt say that. After doing my first BF thread and seeing where things are now, its not really clear what the rules are/were. There was a game being played and you had to play by it to get some of these offers.

Im 100% in favour of killing the amount of "banter" that goes on. It was exchausting and the convos that went on between were nice. Things finally toned down too.

It'd be nice to also find a way at the same time make these giveaways more fair in a way that still also benefits the provider for their marketing purposes and doesnt encourage people to out talk the others.

I say this as a purple newbie.

    reguards.

I'm a RackNerd fan, obviously, and even I considered it spammy this year. I had fun but, I just think some kind of warning, an announcement of new policy, something, would have been fair. Especially since the competition, no matter how spammy it may have been, is now shot.

I certainly respect the decision to clean up the forum, but still, let the threads run their course and then don't allow new ones.
