@Maounique
I want a stable server for personal use, nothing critical, but I want it to be on most of the time, and I want to run things at times that need >1GB RAM and some CPU ram.
Now, I can't do that with OpenVZ, OpenVZ is not stable, and I like running my own kernel as well, KVM/Xen is expensive, so I just get this box, hoping it doesn't fail on me.
If you need it to be up "most of the time" then it is stable enough for that, we had 100+ days uptime on some servers, when we had to patch the kernel, however, we do have reboots now and then (much fewer now, less than one a week in 30+ servers, thank god).
As for own kernel, I agree, make sure you also change/remove the SSH keys.
Good luck and np, sorry again for confusing you.
@Maounique Why do you feel the need to participate in every thread? Trying to promote your business via any sort of visibility? If you don't like OVH that is fine, I don't like you or your company yet you don't see me quoting you at every turn and saying negative things about you. Your opinion is fine but there is no need to keep going and going.
Not liking Maounique is one thing, but not liking Prometeus simply because he works for them is crazy. He's not the owner. Salvatore, aka @prometeus is and he's about the most humble, nicest person ever. Even though it does probably does hurt his company's reputation somewhat I think it's nice that he doesn't force his employees to hide who they really are as many other employers do.
As long as Maounique's opinions don't negatively affect Prometeus' services, which I don't think they do, I don't care how opinionated he is.
You probably need to read what i write before hating me/prometeus.
If you dont, fine, it is your right to do so, but I will point again the obvious:
I didnt involve prometeus at all, just qouted some previous PERSONAL experience and made some predictions based on that which are, so far at least, proven to be true.
Ppl which hate me tried to involve prometeus in order to hurt me and managed, but it was not my intention, i merely proved them wrong with examples of why our services are not more expensive (while pointing also why OVH does not compete with us) and why I am not afraid of OVH if we are to analyze the data at hand, even before proving this offer is a farce.
As you probably see (I am starting to doubt that, blinding hate at times does have the proper sense), I even removed my signature, unlike other providers that participate in every thread to show it off, so how am i promoting prometeus on every thread ? Leaving aside the fact that i dont even read 80% of them.
Before spewing hate, you should get your facts right.
EDIT: BTW, how is your 3 Eur/mo KS doing ?
This is utter rubbish and uncalled for. @Maounique expressed his opinion which everyone has a right to do. His opinion was based on his past experience with OVH and also I guess being involved in hosting. He posts his views in many threads and his views are sometimes quite different to other people's and like I said in a previous post, those views are a part of his personality and he is not being malicious like some have said. He does not mention the company he works for repeatedly like some other providers do when they post and they also have 4-10 line links in their singautures. He has been attacked personally quite a few times in the thread, with prometeus being brought into this. I'm pretty sure that if he didn't work there he would still have largely the same opinions he expresses in various threads. Get off his back!
Thanks a lot
I met @prometeus on this forum (which obviously means I was a member long before that, being already banned once because my opinion was not shared by the majority, even tho i brought proof and many others started to see the same facts) and we liked each other even if we do not share same opinions, so i started to work for him, tho he does not employ me directly and I have other means to make money, including own company that has other contracts.
Therefore, if they try to hurt me by forcing Uncle to kick me, they will not succeed, as jarland already knows, however, they may manage to dirty the reputation of prometeus through some weird scheme but which proves to be working, if you do not read what i write and take their words as facts and/or you do not use our services.
This is unfortunate, but cant be avoided in this forum, this is why, maybe, most reputable hosts ceased to participate.
I'll disagree. The 4 threads €19.99 KS i5-2400 16GB 2x1TB would beat the 4 cores (of an E3-1230v2) OpenVZ 3GB €14.00 40GB VPS monthly I have with you in a matchup because I wouldn't be sharing the CPU and IO with game players and dd testing addicts
If you were referring to the 4 thread KS N2800, then yes my 4 core VPS from Uncle has 2x-3x more CPU power. :P
The processors on the N2800's might suck but they make nice backup servers and are very reliable: 234 days uptime and no downtime yet on my (9.99/Eur) KS N2800
I generally don't have random reboots on dedicated servers and uptimes of a few hundred days or more are the rule. I can't say the same for the average openvz VPS I've used from any provider. Might have something to do with not having to share a server with abusers and ddos targets.
For the record: Prometeus is one of my favorite VPS providers and one of the most reliable VPS providers I've tried and Uncle and Mao are really nice people too
, but for mission critical things I'll (almost) always choose a dedicated server over a VPS for reliability...provided the data center isn't some sh*thole like CommercialMedia. There are many situations though where a VPS is preferable to a dedicated server and a dedicated server would be overkill.
It's funny how people could think of Prometeus/Iperweb as being unprofessional because they don't agree with 1 of their staff (?). I'll always have a box at Iperweb i think, as it's got lots of space and bw for me, and generally low ping to me. Anyways, i think there's already too much off topic for now, so can we get back to the offer?
Maounique should get his famous signature back :P
I promise that will happen when we will be able to have some stock
Whether that will happen because OVH will take our customers or because we will decide OVZ is stable enough to be featured as a regular product, not rock-bottom OVerZold, that remains to be seen. The number of reboots on OVZ are as low as they ever been, but for now the IaaS cloud is finally working and we may be able to launch it this autumn, perhaps even with custom panel
Prices will beat our own VMWare cloud offer, not to mention OVH's :P
Instead of attacking me, PM for a beta tester place, we expanded our cloud now and need more testers to have more load when we simulate maintenance and scale back and forth to test these features.
No hard feelings, except Aldryic which attacked me much harder and even banned me here when he lost all arguments (even so, I can still have a decent conversation with him), I do not hate anyone.
Going back to the offer, I state again my PERSONAL opinion based on PERSONAL experience:
It is not sustainable and will not last;
OVH will never be able to compete with top 30 providers here unless they do something about their customer support. Dropping price only can get them this much customers and not more. Frankly, who will cry over a customer that switches because can save a few pennies ? A small business is like a family business, you like to know all your customers and they feel at home, OVH is a completely different beast, same as hostgator, godaddy, burstnet, hetzner, etc.
I meant your signature "unless otherwise stated, my posts have no affiliation with Prometeus" or something around that line.
What DalComp want to wrote, maybe your old signature that said that all comment were from your opinion, and not stated as prometeus staff, except noted as it.
Ah, I see, however, that didnt help in jarland's case, he even attacked me harder because of that, saying i try to hide behind it :P
EDIT: I hope this one addresses both issues ?
Hahaha... It's visible now
This isn't going to ruin the market, we've sold 30+ VPS every day this week and there's little sign of it stopping. We've had 1 cancellation, but that customer was buying a larger VPS in a different location... so yeah the markets still there...
Well, this offer is only announced a couple of days ago, chances are ppl dont know about it and it is not available yet (save a few lucky ppl), therefore it is too early to tell.
But I completely agree, will not ruin anything.
They have the same base subject, but one is about the offer and the other about the influence it has on the industry. I personally think those are distinct subjects. Can't say why other didn't merge ;-)
+1! I don't understand the "hate" he's getting from some people. Also, I definitely agree with some of points.
@Maounique - Fact is if it was really decimating the market then we'd have 50 - 60 cancellations every hour LOL
I dont know, personally I wouldnt cancel anything before i get it available in some other place (if I still need the service to continue). Since the 3 Eur a month dedis are not delivered yet for the most part and ppl are cancelled left and right, I would not expect any cancellation yet (or not a visible trend anyway), even if they do wish to move.
It is also not available in US from what is transparing so far, therefore only us, EU providers need to tremble in fear, you are spared (for now !).
As lots of people haven't received it yet, they wouldn't cancel. Also most new customers are likely to purchase first, test it and then decide on cancelling. Give it a few days and see.
How many idling VPSes in different locations does everyone of you have? Too many?
Yes, exactly. I don't see the majority of peeople cancelling anything. Some people might just get one more box, this time a dedi at OVH.
Maybe it's time to share my personal experience with OVH, way back to 2006.
In september I bought a kimsufi to host a few charitable organizations sites I was doing for free (so it was my personal money). I paid for 3 months and all went well for 3 months, In january I paid for another quarter, but after a few days I received a 5 days termination notice without further explaination.
On their forum I discovered that rules were changed and they weren't accepting orders from Italy (even if they got my money two times) and they were kicking off all Italian.
And the beautiful part was Octave telling me that he didn't speak English (when he was posting everywere in that language) and that since they had problem with some Italian payment all Italian were bad people. Even if I already paid and had no problems at all.
http://forum.kimsufi.com/archive/index.php/t-1121.html
That part may have been true. When he posts on the non-French forums he posts in French and then the forum moderators quickly translate his posts to English (notice the 3rd post where the poster says I don't understand French and the edited by Nalda on Octave's post here )
People usually correct/adjust the message. But you do agree that a basic english knowledge is required by any technician/engineer?
I mean, a guy see a post were I'm calling him. He decide to reply only to say that didn't speak english and stop? I got it like an insult. :-)
In all reality, I've only seen one cancellation due to the OVH offer (against other providers that is). That was for a non-LEB item.
I agree that basic English knowledge is very helpful to a technician/engineer, but in Octave's case the lack of basic English skills may be due to the fact that his native tongue is Polish and he had to quickly learn French when his parents immigrated to France in the early 90's so learning English took a backseat to learning the language of his new country.
Right, my written french is/was near to null, so I got a translator and used it. When one person want to communicate I'm sure he find the way ;-)
How is this even possible on a single SATA disk? This ioping is just a bullshit software.
The 2.99 kimsurfi server is on IDE
