Pretty much the same situation for me. I initially asked for refund, but decided to just write it off as $25 dollar experiment and close the ticket.
The support has been great, no complains there.
Just... This is something I don't like:
7 Seek_Error_Rate -snip- 113393923666
188 Command_Timeout -snip- 12885098499
Most of my 750gb drives have readings like this. Only one reallocated sector across all drives tho :P
A prostitute give me around the world last night,
this morning my wallet is missing,
at least she give me good service..
You let a prostitute stay over? That's not really how it works.
Darn, that sucks. Did you renew all your cards and buy a new wallet yet? My purchase of $25 is nothing compared to that.
I have a service I paid for which I was able to use for learning zfs, it's raid options, freebsd, quality of Dacentec support and the speeds I get to NC. You have have to take care of all your cards and and worry about identity theft in the future.
Best of luck, and let's hope your wallet will be found before anything bad happens. Also, get a medical check in case you got any sexually transmitted diseases.
Money isn't the issue here - well, it's a superb / attractive offer, when it works.
These hdd's are old as hell. Even though I want to keep the server.
I've just received a reply, let's see how it works now!
You had REALLY bad luck with the HDD's...
Though I think it's worth to keep this bargain. I mean, their support has spent so much time on these issues that I would feel bad for cancelling it.
BIOS was upgraded.
@MagicalTrain, might be worth to ask them to upgrade your BIOS?
I've just asked for KVM again so I can setup iommu there.
I'm in two minds - obviously the amount of storage for that price is attractive, but I'm seriously thinking about cutting out all the 'bargain' servers I've accumulated and just pooling the money I save into something a bit fucking serious like this : https://www.hetzner.com/dedicated-rootserver/sx61
More like this https://www.hetzner.com/dedicated-rootserver/sx131 tbh. But yeah, I kinda feel the same, cheap deals are nice and all, but it gets tiring dealing with the compromised you have to make. Like when I had to install my OS via qemu with a network VNC connection on that 10 dollar oneprovider server, that was a little less than fun. This server is probably worth the trouble though, since it is US located with 7TB storage on gigabit for 25 dollars. Hard to get a better deal for someone in the US who wants a decent connection to their cheap storage.
@MikePT Yeah, they wrote me that they were close to being able to do the update, but I dont feel all that well about the server after the many many broken HDDs in this thread.
Now that's a nice box. What's your use case - media?
I don't need that much storage - I love it and all, but 60TB is way more than even I need.
Yeah, I get that the Dacentec offer is really decent for the US, but that doesn't make any difference to me....if I could hand it over to someone, I would.
Completely agree that at some point, you have to realise that there's no longer any economy in making the compromises anymore.
Yup, Plex, Emby, Own/NextCloud, all running off one uber server.
I'm currently paying €81/month across 2 servers for 14TB of storage (if you include this Dacentec box it's €102 across 3 for 21TB).
Historically, the idea of doing €83 on one server would be inconceivable to me, but when you look at the numbers, €83/month for 24TB actually makes sense.
Nice little monster storage...
If I were you, I would go ahead and order it ;-), plus, it's in EU.
Huh, nice. I should really stop relying on these "unlimited storage providers" soon, need to buy a "megabox" myself sometime. Getting off topic of this thread so we can move elsewhere.. interested on your opinion Plex vs Emby?
On your current setup, is one server one thing, or do you combine them together in some network mounted way? I'd assume one server one thing.
I prefer Plex over Emby purely as that's what I use most, due to it being much more mature at the time I started.... I need to build out a proper Emby library soon, and the moment it's mainly used for home videos and things that don't need the proper artwork/metadata treatment like sports events and the like.
So I have 1 server for Plex and 1 for Emby but.....I also have a 'master' server where the content, metadata and configurations are all backed up to. In an emergency, that server has the horsepower to take over as both the Plex and Emby servers simultaneously and run quite happily whilst I rebuild and resync the 'satellite' servers.
This is why I rarely use any kind of RAID and instead maximise my disk space, as I've got full redundancy that I can switch on at a moment's notice by making a firewall change.
Financial juggling involved, due to that setup fee. The other half will murder me if I do another £130 on servers this month, need to get some cancellations in before I pull the trigger.
The other half. Tamed @Nekki
Think what I'm like.
Imagine what it takes for me to be under the thumb.
Terrifying.
I can certainly get an idea. Should we call you deep throat royalty master?
Coincidentally, my username for My PSN account.
I'm dropping every little tiny fucker I have no matter how cheap atm. It's not worth it. Been pondering about getting this: https://www.leaseweb.com/bare-metal-server/configure/25899#hardware-container
€89/month without vat.
Its just a matter of time. You wont resist
Nice! I love my Leaseweb dedi
We also have a 2xE5620 server available that comes stock with 6GB in the basic configuration but you can add more storage by customizing your order on the order page. Check it out https://billing.dacentec.com/hostbill/?cmd=cart&action=add&id=397.
We were able to successfully update a few of the servers yesterday. If anyone is having issues with BIOS on your server and needs it to be updated please open a ticket with our support team requesting it.
Honestly, the issue with the servers wasn't as widespread as we thought based on this thread. We only had a couple of tickets related to this issue and a large majority of the ones we pulled down from stock once you guys alerted us to the issue already had the BIOS updated.
It sucks this issue came up for sure, but we love positive (like a lot) and negative (not so much but still helps) feedback. I'm glad we were able to catch this and thank you to the customers who worked with us to resolve the issue. We've got a couple of offers for customers affected by this issue. If you were affected by the BIOS update open up a ticket with our sales team and we'll see if we can restore your trust in us. If you cancelled your server, still open up a ticket with us. We'd love for you to give us another shot.
Thanks to everyone for the great comments on our support team. Customer service has and will always remain a priority for Dacentec.
@dacentec
Thanks for joining us in this thread. On what basis do you replace the hard drives in this offer?
I mentioned earlier the absurd Command_Timeout and Seek_Error_Rate stats in my SMART output. While the drives do work, I found those worrysome. It wouldn't be bad if it was just one drive, but it's 3 of the 4 750gb disks.
Also, time for me to request bios update as well :P
I think some of seagate HDDs always have insane numbers in this attributes, even for almost new and perfetly good drives. They probabably just mean something else, not raw amount of errors...
Like this hdd in home PC, which was this way from the beginning:
If you're seeing any issues with an HDD just notify our support staff. They will run a few tests and if the issue is confirmed the drive replacement will be performed free of charge on any of our Dedicated Servers. Any HDD showing signs of failing would absolutely be replaced without issue.
Sounds like the Dacentec customer care I remember. Hope it all gets sorted out
Seek error rates aren't usually too much to worry about in isolation, but a high command timeout is usually an indicator of a badly performing disk, if not one that's about to fail.
@dacentec if you return the canceled servers to stock, sign me up for one.
