    Have an update @Calin ?

Calin emailed yesterday and said downtime for ETA 3-4 days but will add free 3 weeks time and start time on the day it will be delivered.

    Here is email

Hello dear customers, we are in the process to migrate all VPS from ZFS partitions to LVM partitions, to permanently solve the problem related to performance and downtime, we have an ETA of about 3-4 days to complete the migration, after this time the billing period will start from the date the migration will be completed and you will get free 3 weeks free for all problems created in the last 2 weeks

An email will be received when the migration of all VPS is completed

sincere apologies for all the problems caused and loss of trust in our company

    Regards,
    Calin

  • Thanks. Hope its not a moving target as i have read this 3-4 days ago here already ;-)

  • jsgjsg Member, Resident Benchmarker

And even if it became 5 or 6 days I wouldn't care much. The relevant point is that after that period the VPS should work flawlessly with say 99% uptime.

Waiting a couple of days to get a working system is annoying but worth it. Shaving off a day or two and working hurriedly isn't much less annoying but ending up with an unstable situation again would be a killer.

So I don't complain about x days vs x+2 days if it works properly then.

  • Update

    Hello dear customers ,

I'm back with a message to tell you that we finally fixed the problems with VPS storage downtimes.

I migrated all VMs from ZFS partitions to LVM partitions (I used LVM on a lot of production nodes for virtualization and never encountered any problems with it).

We preferred to do a higher downtime this time to test and make sure that everything works at normal standards, after several tests in the last week we found that everything goes perfectly and constantly

What to do for your VPS be online again??

You have to re-mount the partitions again, login to VNC same at the tutorial at the last mail, for those who have problems just leave a replay to this mail and we will help you to re-mount the VPS partition

We want to specify that the old partitions were on ZFS, we tried to move them to LVM and the process was complete, but after several tests we found that there could be corruption at metadata on the ext4 partition, so we preferred to delete them, because in the last 2 weeks since we delivered VPS they have not been used so much, and for no happened other incidents in future, we preferred to delete all data. We guarantee that all VPS work normally and there will be no data loss in the future.

To show our commitment to your satisfaction, we are offering all affected customers 4 weeks of free service starting from today. Additionally, your invoices will reflect this adjustment, ensuring that you are not charged during this period

Sorry again for all this downtimes
For any problems replay on this mail or write us on telegram @ihostart for help you fast if you have problems for re-mount partitions

    Regards,
    Calin

  • I thought something had gone wrong at my first attempt doing mkfs.ext4 and rebooted but it's just taking a very long time (over 18 minutes) to format a 4TB partition.

    time mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdb1

    mke2fs 1.47.0 (5-Feb-2023)

    Writing inode tables: done

Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done

    sys 0m0.134s

I don't know if that amount of time is normal. I did create a partition with gdisk but I doubt that is the cause of the time taken.

Likely due to the I/O limit put on the disk if I had to guess.

    Small update

Also ran a benchmark on the large storage disk again. Results:

    4 threads/ 4k blocksize result is 7.77 MB/s and 1988 IOPs.

I/we were told to wait a couple of days for the first phase of "wild testing" and uploading to end.
    So, I did wait.

Just ran a test (of the large storage drive) again. The 4t4k result:

    2.39 MB/s, 611 IOPs

Maybe just unlucky timing but still, just about 1/3rd of the former performance.
Sure, it's a dirt cheap storage VPS and for its price it probably is within what some (many?) consider acceptable but I'm not exactly happy. But of course I'll do some more runs over the coming weeks; after all, I want to be fair with @Calin.

(a)different test methods with different parameters create different results, (b) maybe I ran mine at an "unfortunate" time and/or you ran yours at a more fortunate time.

Depending on how a storage server is built and configured a couple of users more or less can make a significant difference.
