Just wondering if it would be unethical or not nice not to tell him.

It's not unethical.

Some employers do have "no moonlighting" policies and if you agree to that, then you should abide by that. But otherwise, what you do in your time is your business.

Obvious disclaimers:

• If you're competing with your employer and taking business away from them, that's a different story
• If you're working on job #2 during time you are being paid to work on job #1, that's unethical
• If you are using your primary employer's equipment, services, etc. to do work for job #1, that's not cool (unless you have permission)

The last time I did this, my boss asked me not to work part time and gave me a hefty raise. ( I do not want that to happen with my new boss.)
