I figured I’d share this with the community that we are now accepting resume submissions for an on-site data center and help desk technician in Phoenix, Arizona.

We are also always looking for anyone interested in any position. If you feel that you are qualified for a specific position, please don’t be afraid to submit your resume with a cover letter.

Please note we are not looking for remote help at this time.

@FatGrizzly didn't ask me to say anything here. Nevertheless, I can't resist putting in a good word for him. He's been helping with FreeVPS.org system administration chores. He's great to work with, dependable, responsive, clever, insightful, friendly, and helpful. Highly recommended!

Hi all, I'm not certain what kind of role I should be seeking at this point or what exactly to present myself as. I have a somewhat broad area of experience in various kinds of helpdesk and product support roles. If I manage to be significantly T-shaped, then the deep/vertical part of that is probably in Linux (including to some degree bash, regex, sed, awk, vim, etc.) -- I've used it personally since Ubuntu Hoary Hedgehog in 2005, staffed a small Linux shell account provider back around that time, have run it on VPSes and dedicated servers, configured and troubleshot more services on them than I can remember (some of which actually had other users), and have also gained some experience in diagnosis/troubleshooting/RCA on a RHEL-based enterprise network security platform. After that, maybe networking. I never finished my CCNA but some people I've talked to have suggested that some of my experience may be considered CCNP-level.

I'm interested in mostly whatever you think I could help with and willing to pay usual dues, but I would greatly prefer not receiving back to back calls all day, or logging into an ACD at all for that matter. Still fine with being on the phone and experienced with ticket management/triage/communication/juggling. NOC? SOC? Deep diagnostic drilling? Documentation? PM for resume, Indeed, LinkedIn, screenshots of crafting arcane solutions to highly specific problems on the TryHackMe Discord chat, Rocket League clips, my .bashrc, etc.

    • Consumer/retail tech support in wild west days of removing active rootkits by hand over remote desktop sessions instead of reinstalling, 2008-2010
    • Residential ISP T2 ("the buck stops here" / "last point of contact") tech support and escalations smoothing, 2012-2013
    • Some freelance transcription, copy editing, and tech support 2010-2014 when everyone was hyping working for yourself as a tech support mercenary in a web portal, somewhat less during the above job until we all got laid off
    • B2B tech support for enterprise network firewall suite 2014-2016. Spent most of the time specializing in VPN (IPSec and SSL, site to site and client to site, forming tunnels with other vendors, forming tunnels over dynamic routing, making dynamic routing work over tunnels, making overlapping networks work without the customer having to change anything, troubleshooting sudden unexplained inability to pass traffic through a previously working tunnel, inspecting and pinpointing the error in IKE negotiation, etc.), identity awareness, and loosely related features. Touched everything though. Also served on other product teams, one of which was focused on firewall traffic processing/acceleration and OS performance, while the other dealt with management, logging and reporting, virtualization, and high-end appliances. Found great enjoyment of documentation and contributed to the KB about twice as much as required.

After that, work experience continues in some more meatspace-oriented domains; IT experience continues in personal projects, largely in the form of disparate one-off problems that never quite seem worth writing a blog post about once they're out of the way of whatever I was actually trying to do. I may not exactly have a lab running for all the things I've worked with before, but if you're interested in, e.g., knowing that I can perform a certain task in a certain tool, I'm willing to build out a demo.

Customer satisfaction was generally high (~9/10) where tracked.

    Held certs, all expired:
Check Point Certified Security Associate (R77 or R76 or so)
    Check Point Certified Security Expert
Check Point Certified Managed Security Expert
Check Point Certified Security Master (I think when I passed CCSM it wasn't quite at R80 yet but it was close to switching)
Blue Coat Certified Specialist (X-Series) (previously Crossbeam (now Blue Coat (now Symantec Enterprise (now Broadcom))))
