    @Nekki - you're dropping the ball!

I'm not going to sully Emma with this filth.

    Flagged for signature over length.

Send IHOP gift cards to the four IDs mentioned in your signature, and I'll retract my complaint.

    I don't negotiate with hard-bodies.

Usually problems are blamed on Karen.
It's surprising that the dude didn't blame Karen for losing the VPS this time.

Karen is a delight and none will besmirch her name.

  • I've brought both drives home to work on but haven't had luck in getting them to power on. Neither wants to, they don't get at all warm. Moved them to different chassis, different motherboards, use the onboard slots, etc.

Professional recovery service may be able to secure the data. The drives will be unusable then but they are already not working normally so wouldn't make any difference.
It just depends on whether the actual flash chip is damaged. They are quite robust these days. You may wanna give it a try tho it can cost few hundred bucks.

Google says raid10 is RAID configuration that combines disk mirroring and disk striping to protect data.

But if there's one thing I've learned from this thread is that no host protects data.

Do you know how I should think of raid10?

It basically means the data is duplicated but still somewhat optimized for speed… and means it is a bit safer if a drive fails as there is a redundant copy of the data live with the system.

In the case of this specific thread though, all the drives were destroyed, so RAID10 wouldn’t have helped anyway. And it is possible to lose a drive on both sides of a RAID10 and lose data anyway, especially as rebuilding a drive failure takes time, drives like to fail together, and it just needs one drive on both sides to fail before a restore is complete to lose it all.

It’s an example of why sometimes a host can restore a backup and sometimes they can’t - it depends on what failed and where.

  • this page took like 20sec to load.. wonder LET have hard time processing long thread like this? (but then Virmach BF thread would already crashed the site)

A bunch of websites I use are down right now and I'm about to lose it... Reeeeeeeee

So... to answer this in an economic way...

LET (and LET-market focused hosts) focus on optimizing for the final price. We all know the market on LET is most sensitive to pricing. DigitalOcean definitely brought the "5 dollars for 512MB VPS" a thing (when historic market pricing for this was around 7 dollars). Then as RAM got cheaper they brought it down to 1GB/$5.

The "cloud-computing" "evolution" that's taken place with a la carte ("pay only what you use") structure has given people the option to take on more risks (like this case) or to roll out their own solution to save $$$. I mean many providers now focus on hourly billing, to give you the option to pay only the hours you use, not the pay periods. This gives you the flexibility to build your tech infrastructure the way you need it, but with the understanding that all they're offering to you is a piece of a server in a datacenter (no added on service like backups, DDoS Protection, etc.).

With the budget-consciousness of the low-end market, we've seen that people care the most about the price/hardware-network value and significantly less on the added on service. So to optimize for the pricing, many additional services (some considers "essential") are left as paid add-ons.

AWS, GCP, Azure, DO, Vultr, and BuyVM all operate in a similar manner. If, similar to this experience, your storage medium (NVMe drive, HDD, etc.) dies but you didn't pay for the backups (or have your own backup solutions in place), then you're SOL. Maybe it could have been better communicated that no backups == you're liable for your own data, but everyone operates like this with varying levels of damage. Some have built more resilient solutions to resolve this (e.g. Azure or GCP), but they also charge you a lot more than DO/Vultr/BuyVM.

So if you want backups included with your product, then buy the backup addon or buy a VPS from a provider that has that included. Either way, you're paying for it one way or another (either knowingly or unknowingly).

I'm not for or against any side because hardware failure sucks for everyone. Yes this could have been handled better on both sides. Yes there were some inconsistencies in certain areas. But at the end of the day, BuyVM offered the service they promised (backups were not purchased) and the agreement was that the client will take on the risk. After all, the client's data is much more valuable to the client rather than to BuyVM (sure they might lose a client, but the client lost time/effort/more money/etc.). But BuyVM did what they could to try and resolve it amicably.

    Almost there, folks.

Red Notice was decent. Definitely not a "holy crap this is amazing".

Yes I would also let Ryan Reynolds do things.

No. He changed his username to that in 2016 shortly after I left this forum for a while.

Since then people have been mixing us up and some people assume he's me and I'm him. I was an admin at another vps forum though. I am the original pie.

I haven't found anything, I don't pick through peoples data.

As for DMCA notices? I've been seen some shit. Actual shit, like, smut basically.

Anyway, can we wrap this up? @HalfEatenPie's post is a good 'sum it up'.

We'll work to offer weekly backups. I've been testing some new platforms to help keep storage needs under control, we could even see it rolled out before EOY. It'd just show up as a backup inside of Stallion that a user could restore on their own.

We already have an offsite backup node every location will be feeding into, its just not fully deployed yet.

As usual, this will be included with all plans. Users must OPT-IN within Stallion on each service once available.
