Hetzner Dedicated Servers now with real unlimited traffic

  • @xrz how many of your 100 servers are affected? Are they all 20€ auction servers?

What kind of traffic is it?

  • hetzner probably lured all those torrent/plex traffic abusers into a trap with their unmetered announcement, so they were pushing hard for a few days.
until hetzner then had enough data gathered to filter/shape that crap traffic properly or at least put all those boxes together on the same uplink haha.

  • @xrz have you tried if a reboot would fix it?

If Hetzner sells you 1Gbit unmetered for 21.85EUR, and 1Gbit Cogent costs 100$, not to speak of PREMIUM multihomed, obviously some where they will cut it.

MyLoc did the same, they throttled traffic which went over DE-CIX, 1000Mbit unmetered my ass. After we complained a few times, we had full speed from OVH to MyLoc, for backups, they took ages as the throttle was in place.

  • We have a couple hundred dedicated Servers at Hetzner and where getting reports from our customers lately from overseas that they experience a heavy lag which makes the Remote sessions the use nearly not useable.

Thats how i came across that thread and it seems i found out the reason. Hetzner was not informing us that they changed the traffic plans and only wanted that our customers who experience the lag do a MTR over 1000 packets after i made a ticket. @Hetzner_OL

I am open for dedicated Server offers in the US as i don't believe it will be getting any better.

They throttle outgoing everything even internal traffic if you got in their penalty traffic profile

From my experience that was the case before they introduced unmetered traffic even, so no change.

I’m on US Comcast and I occasionally need to hope on a vpn in the evening for stable rdp, but as you stated it occurred before the change as well. On a vpn everything is snappy again, just need to get around the bottleneck.

  • Idk why you guys are so annoying. Hetzner doesn't do anything to your traffic. Shut up and call them, if you don't believe it.

I've actually witnessed a more stable throughput at different hours, but again, I mainly/only target continental Europe and I do not use their services for plex/torrent at all, nor do I hog the link 24/7. If they throttle/shape/whetever, it's positive for my usage case it seems.

Hetzner staff repeatedly denied any kind of shaping, (de-)prioritization, filtering, throttling, differences in peering between servers, including for heavy bandwidth users and services like Plex, Tor, and torrent, and stated there were no plans for it.

You don't have to convince me, you know. Their general policy on peering is fairly known and I've seen some misplaced comparisons. I try to keep track of updates on their forum (where this thread has been referenced as well and the whole xrz's business discussed too; there's also a healthy dose of "I've been in this business for 18 years and I've seen things" vs" I've been in this business for 20 years and you're a fucking millennial" too). To be completely honest I have yet to read a public statement like the one you're proposing by a PR of theirs, here or elsewhere; anyway, so far so good.

@mfs I'm not trying to "convince" you. I said that whatever people in this thread are claiming Hetzner does, their staff of all departments denied it many times when I asked them in detail. This knowledge is publicly available. Anyone is free to contact them.

You can of course continue to make up wild accusations in a forum, if you prefer doing so.

Either your blame is horribly directed, or I've very badly explained myself. Or both. Or maybe I misread your post. My knowledge about their policy on peering is the same of yours. I'm not accusing anyone and I'm not subtly hinting anything; quite the contrary, actually.

Sorry, it was meant to be a "generic you". None of my comments was directed against you. You just mentioned Plex/torrent and I wanted to inform you that I had inquired about this in (very) great detail. I don't even need 330TB traffic, but I am looking for a long-term server provider and don't want any bad surprises.

    So far it's looking good.

Thank you @Hetzner_OL Im pulling 150TB already and the month is not even over yet.

For all of you complainers, this is exactly what happens when provider goes unmetered.. What did you expect?

  • just wondering, what did you guys do to throw lots of bandwidth? porn and illegal torrent?

Really, really, painfully easy to abuse bandwidth.

Just because it's unlimited doesn't mean you should blatantly abuse it and brag about it.

I see unlimited as a way to sporadically burst above what would otherwise be your limit but even after this change, I haven't pushed above their previous 20 TB limit. 20 TB is plenty and is much more than other providers give. Pushing 150 TB of porn for the sake of it is stupid and I hope those who abuse DO get the shaping hammer at some point.

Ask the people who downloaded 2PB from cloudflare free, before they got suspended.

It's easy to burn tons of bandwidth and it would be up to Hetzner to call it abuse. But the 7 piece Syzygy chess endgame database just came out, it's 16TB of data, and lots of serious chess engine users will want to download it. One copy per 2 days would be 750Mbps or 240TB a month. Alternatively, host some video streaming. It doesn't have to be porn to get tons of viewers.

I haven't noticed significant change in upload speed from my server since unlimited started, but most of my traffic is transatlantic and have always been slow.

    You must be my neighbour.

  • Guys, last time I tried hetzner, their network were suck.
I could get better download speed from my 100mbps kimsufi boxes. Can anyone tell me how their network performs now?
I used this script last time I tried.
