Dasabo blocked all customer accounts and is now forcing KYC

edited 5:05AM in News

Today, Dasabo suddenly blocked all of their customers' accounts and is forcing everyone to complete KYC..

Honestly, I think this is a risk with these companies when you're asked to send them your personal documents and information..

No matter how much they think they need to protect themselves from customers, you also have every right to protect yourself from them..

What happens if one of their support staff doesn't get paid and decides to dump all those documents and personal information online? We've seen things like this happen before..

And if I remember correctly, there was also an incident with this company where someone from their support team stole random amounts from customers' Visa and Mastercard cards that were linked to their accounts..

So what are we supposed to expect next?

You're asking customers to trust you with some very sensitive information, but trust goes both ways..

And of course, we have every right to ask Dasabo for (KYB - Know Your Business) as well..
If you're asking us to verify who we are and hand over sensitive documents, it's only fair that we can verify who we're dealing with too..

This is gonna be an interesting discussion with them; without pointing out which regulations are saying they have to do this, I won't send out a copy.

I'm dutch, and dutch law says that it is only allowed for a few situations/organisations to send out an unaltered image of your identity documents. Others have to see if there are other ways to do KYC and even if they don't have, they can only have an altered image (i.e. without photo of the holder). Stripe procedure especially requires that photo, so it's a no-go for me - even if Dasabo comes up with a good excuse to do KYC.

The blocking of the account is also an interesting one, because they deliberately prevent you from having access to your account, so you can't go into discussion through a ticket. And the sent out mail is from a no-reply address.

Good thing I did not renew my servers.

  • Got it as well. I guess they are trying to get rid of low-end customers. Well, bye bye

That becomes a hard situation, at times costs have increased and a provider may need to up the prices but here are worried to do it even a small amount because of the “name and shame” culture.

I know some providers will go over the top with price hikes but there is also a fair point when eg power has increased in recent years by the levels it has in certain countries too.

True, name and shame culture exists to just put pressure on the host to get cheap deals. Some hosts take it seriously, some just chill. I think in this particular situation, apart from how they made drama 'should we stay on let', introducing mandatory KYC for all customers is kinda very meh step.

  • Yeah, they blocked my account too and are asking for verification through Stripe, even though I didn’t even use that payment method. It’s time to leave this company. I wonder if a refund for the remaining balance is possible, or if I’ll have to file a complaint with the EU regulator over unreturned funds?

The fun part begins, when you refuse to KYC, they suspend your service and keep your money.

Or in other words every customer is now under mandatory KYC review, not because you did anything wrong, but because their security team would rather interrogate thousands of innocent customers than build systems capable of identifying one guilty one.

That's why Tor is forbidden for being anonymous, complicated, and therefore terrifying to a company whose entire security model is based on recognizing scary words.

A VPN tunneled over Tor, however, passes without difficulty. Once the traffic is wrapped in something their dashboard understands, it becomes perfectly acceptable.

    Welcome Sir.
We do not understand your traffic.
We do not understand our own policies.
    We cannot explain the ban.
    We cannot process the appeal.
But we can absolutely keep your money while insisting that you are the security threat.

Paypal has a nice button for these cases.

If you have to do KYC for whatever reason, I can (ultimately) live with that.

    However:

    • KYC can be done in other ways as this
    • KYC with recognisable photo in the Netherlands is explicitely not allowed
    • Blocking access to your account beforehand is basically extortion
    • Giving no means to get into talks about all this is plain lame

Personally, if done in a correct way and with good reasons, I can understand the economics and price rises.

However, there are also things I've seen that don't seem fair in my book:

    • Price rise of 3x with the argument "new servers are almost twice the price" and on servers that are only half a year old
    • Giving "2x top up bonus" and then, within a short amount of time, price rises that surpass that
    • Giving the customer no choice; with longer contract runtimes basically saying "accept the rise during the contract or loose the VPS without refund"

Agreed, sadly here the reaction to any increase will he a thread of abuse even a small realistic increase and being placed on a name and shame list run by someone that is not even a customer, just like drama and causing hate towards providers they do not approve of.

Even if done correctly there is a handful that will always twist the issue to attempt to force providers to backtrack

  • @xHosts said: shame list run by someone that is not even a customer

Kids are welcome to play the way they want. I noticed that many young providers are entertaining this because they are afraid for their young reputation. However, the more you feed those [not-very-funny] trolls, they more [useless] lists they will create. Just ignore them, they will continue to entertain each other until something trendy will appear on this horizon.

@Neoon said: He better has the KYC rule in his ToS, otherwise Paypal will probably bleed him dry.

Even if he does have it in his ToS, that would most likely apply to signing up. Once you've already paid, they have to render the services to you or refund you. They can't add additional obligations without very specific writing in your ToS. "We may require KYC on purchase" would not be sufficient.

it's the "legal" way to let the unwanted customers leave??
