[MXroute] Pre-Black Friday 2022 Email Hosting Offer

jarjar Patron Provider, Top Host, Veteran

Hey friends,

Black Friday is coming up, and I need help putting butts in seats on a badass server in the short term. The damn thing isn't even averaging a load of 1. The server has 128G of memory, and we're using 27G. I think we can do better than that. Here's my pre-Black Friday 2022 offer:

  • 25GB Storage
  • Unlimited Domains
  • Unlimited Emails
  • 300 outbound per hour (per email)
  • Annually: $25
  • Biennially: $45
  • Triennially: $65

You get a discount for how much time you prepay for. The best deal is prepaying for 3 years. We tried to deadpool with the last promo, but you fuckers didn't let us, so this is the next attempt.

If you're unfamiliar with MXroute, let me give you a quick intro. You bring the domain, and we provide the email hosting. We're a fully managed service provider with the basics: IMAP, POP, and SMTP. We use a slightly stripped-down copy of DirectAdmin to give you a front end. While that doesn't seem impressive, it does the job, and don't think for a second that we just loaded DA on a box and said, "Hey, we're an email host." The number of things that happen on the backend that is not at all standard to best facilitate email users' needs is few. I mean, you can get a look at just some of what we do here: https://github.com/mxroute/da_server_updates

We open-source our custom spam filters, and they are continually adjusted to try to tackle new trends: https://github.com/mxroute/spamassassin_rules/blob/main/local.cf

We have fantastic webmail options like Crossbox, Afterlogic, Roundcube, and Snappy (an improved fork of Rainloop). We have an outbound system that I genuinely believe is unmatched, and I'm going to describe it to you:

If your outgoing email is rejected due to IP reputation, we re-send from another IP. If this fails too many times, we send it to mail.baby (Interserver) who does the same. If it fails repeatedly, they send it to MailChannels for the final delivery attempts. The point is that if it's possible for you to send that email to that recipient, as sure as god's got sandals, we'll get that email to that recipient or die trying.

Another fun thing we do: We help you protect your domain reputation by filtering your website's registration emails. Email addresses that have been known to sign up for multiple forums and blogs solely in an attempt to spam them will be caught and halted. Often, those email addresses are compromised, and the original user returns later to report all of those forum/blog registration emails as spam. Our filtering helps you reduce these occurrences with no extra effort. That kind of value add right there is what we're always looking to do more and more of. No one is looking out for you to such a degree; we're damn proud to be the exception.

A brief FAQ:

Q: Can I switch my plan to this promo?
A: You can purchase a new promo and migrate your own data to it freely. However, no action will be taken to assist with the billing or migration when moving to a promo. It's nothing personal, just how we sustain promotions by relying on our automated systems. Promos are often entirely based on newly provisioned servers.

Q: Can I really add UNLIMITED domains?
A: Ok, real talk. If you add so many domains that it breaks a server, we have no choice but to consider that "Server Abuse" by our Terms of Service. I don't know what that number is. Still, if you have to randomly generate the domain names and push them over the API to add them all by the end of the year, that's probably the number. Since 2013 we've had 2 customers find out what that number was for them. I don't think you're statistically likely to find yourself in their company. We're not going to be dicks about it btw, we fully refunded those 2 customers.

Q: What kind of services don't you allow?
A: Good question. Leak forums (forum where people shared leaked password databases), adult forums (you know, porn), anyone who has to send hundreds of emails at a time to qq.com (I don't even know), deceptive use of third party services through us (ex. randomly generating email accounts to sign up for 5,000 Steam accounts), forward-only service for a massive number of domains (11.8k domains under one account was the number that broke it and added that to policy).

Q: What is your refund policy?
A: Pitchforks. Please don't sign up if you think you might want a refund. I'd rather lose the potential sale. I don't care if it's unfriendly; it's the only way to stop people from forcing me to offer "Free trials" and eat the overhead they generate. That overhead bleeds into our actual client's services if I let it, and I will violently refuse to raise prices on my customers.

Q: Where are your servers located?
A: You will be provisioned in Hetzner's FSN1 facility for this offer. For other services, you'll either be in Hetzner or ReliableSite.

Q: Can we choose custom locations?
A: Afraid not.

Q: What is "hostname" on the order form?
A: That's the initial domain you are signing up with. I need a domain to provision the account. You aren't married to it. You can rename the domain later or replace it with another.

  • Noob question,
Can I use to send mails from my server.

Like I have a VPS with DirectAdmin and my WordPress site should be able to send woocommerce transaction emails / forgot password emails.
Similarly, Drupal CMS should be able to send mails.

So, if someone wants a refund, they can write a script to add millions of domains, until the server crashes?

Absolutely, and plenty do. Just keep in mind that on your DA server it might try to capture emails internally if sending to a domain that's been added to the system, things like that. Basically just keep in mind domains in /etc/virtual are by default considered local and can be changed under the "MX Records" page in DirectAdmin.

Should be fun to do in a way that doesn't out itself as obviously malicious right away :joy:

  • If possible give an offer on Reseller too on Black Friday , want to taste one.

I don't. But you'd get the SMTP hostname and port, and you'd create the user and password for it. Then you just use that in any software that supports SMTP.

    Thank you
I have never tried anything like this. I was thinking if I could configure something on the VPS so that all mails from the system uses mxroute service. Or may be I just edit DNS records of the domains.

Currently mails from my VPS goes to spam folder. I will probably send less than 50 mails per day.

  • I would like to add a second reseller plan to my account (I have the Black Friday 2019 plan). Is there any similar offer?

It's tempting to move to this since my services that send out through MXroute are also in Hetzner's FSN1. I think I will resist for now, but who knows what might happen if the deal sticks around too long...

Best of luck with the offer!

  • I was going to wait for the $10/year offer, but the extra 60 cents a month won't kill me

On the off chance that anyone does take that joke seriously, it'll be wildly apparent the difference between trying to cause a problem and legitimately hitting an unplanned barrier.

Though honestly, the thing those 2 customers caused was excessive config reload time for apache leading to downtime when users added domains, but I killed that by stripping the virtual hosts generated when a user adds a domain. So really, would probably be a whole different problem I don't even see yet 😂

  • Jar, you are observing tendency from people to use your services for transactional email. Why can't you offer "mailgun like" service? It should be easy for you. Infra is here, only few code lines missing. Because that DA atrocity is, well, not the best.

Agreed, happy customer here but I'd love a more mailgun like service.

People want logs with that kind of service, and there is no current open source application to track logs through the relays and return them in a sane way to individual but authenticated users. So while I want to do this, it will be an iteration and a development. But a quick spoiler, this is what I'm looking at for handling the backend of that development: https://typesense.org/

    Because fuck elastic.

Most likely won't ever happen. It's intended that it drives people to sustainable recurring plans.

Plot twist: He named this offer as Pre Black Friday, instead of Halloween. This says something extremely irrelevant about @jar personality: he might not like Halloween.

These solutions while are good for personal use, they may be in-proper for serious, high volume business application. Such niche is not made with standard available software, you must tailor made it. Wrapper to SMTP? Custom SMTP/relay server? Planning, hiring proper developer(s). A headache.

If the lifetime plans continue into a more prosperous future where storage to dollar ratios start to scale as quickly as they have in the past it may be true that it adjusts to compensate. More likely though if, right now, I were to offer a larger lifetime package I would probably price it at what I would want someone to pay for 25 years of service on it.

The limitations of disk space per server with the current method of email storage, and the recurring nature of it's overhead to provide, it has to either be small empty corners of servers (can be imbalanced on a per server basis as long as the whole levels out), or it has to be a solid bet on the future.
