    Funny, the more memory the machine has, the more CPU steal it has.
    The ones with 0.5 or 1.0GB do have the least.

    up to 16% on idle, the other ones 5% max

    My lowest RAM Virmach averages 5% but none of the higher ones have noticeable steal.

    My VirMach VPS with 10GB RAM usually has less than 1% steal. It actually got better over the past few months for some reason. It's around the same steal% as a $15/month BuyVM VPS that's supposed to have "dedicated CPU" 🤔

    I think with the larger ones, you're less likely to have noisy neighbours, as your VPS consumes a larger portion of the server's overall resources.

    Is this server in Seattle? I noticed the same thing with my box in Seattle

    1.8GB RAM on SEAKVM5 was between 0.6-0.9% steal for last 7 days.
    384MB RAM on SEAKVM14 was between 4.6-6% for last 7 days (and ever since I've started monitoring for it).

    It looks like my algorithm has been cracked :o

    image.png

    Trying out a new formula. Well, actually the secret sauce with all these sales is that we never stay with just one formula so while you picked up on a few things it means your algorithm won't always fit.

    But if I had to guess I'm assuming you're undervaluing disks, overvaluing CPU's unless it's a lot of cores since on ours it doesn't scale like that... $5 per core, $3 per 1GB RAM, $0.50 per 1GB disk, $3 an IP and $3 per 10TB bandwidth? Then you probably scale it down by 20% for Buffalo and maybe Los Angeles. Let me see if I can come up with a funky plan that'll rate well on your system, for fun.

    There's no secret in JavaScript, so...

    • $5 per core
    • $3 per GB RAM
    • some weird formula for HDD
    • $4 per additional IP
    • half rate if not KVM
    • reduce if RAM smaller than 1024MB, HDD smaller than 5GB, or bandwidth less than 200GB

    https://pastebin.com/m1cLzv6K

    I prefer "reverse engineering" the formula using high school methods.

    Much less accurate and a waste of time.

    High school methods can't figure out the HDD formula:

    input['hdd'] * (5 - Math.log(input['hdd']) / 3.0081547935525483) / 10

    To break the formula:

    • VIRTUALIZATION KVM – requested poorly to break @ddhhz's crappy code
    • RAM 1024MB RAM
    • CPU 1 vCORE
    • HDD 3405304GB SSD (RAID 10)
    • BANDWIDTH 200GB BANDWIDTH
    • LOCATION ANTARCTICA LOCATION
    • IPs 1 DEDICATED IPv4

    A billion dollars for 3.4PB storage, and the algorithm will rate it "no brainer", because HDD portion goes negative.

    valuation({
      price:"$1000000000",
      cpu:1,
      ram:1024,
      hdd:3405304,
      bw:200,
      ips:1,
      virt:"KVM",
    })

    {
      price: 1000000000,
      percentOff: 6167049539360,
      value: -0.016215209455249457,
      annotation: "best",
    }

    If anyone buys, you won't have to provision this much storage because it'll take many years for them to upload so much data at a rate of 200GB/month or generate the data within CPU and IO limits.

    I still slightly respect them for realizing it's too hard for their engineers to think about it/do it rather than Serverhub who did provide it but it was broken every other week. Come to think of it, Serverhub's IPv4 is broken every other week too. We knew we had to move away after we tried getting a RAID controller replacement and we eventually had to migrate everyone off and wait like half a year for them to not do it.

    Most of the consolidation we've done there has just been servers breaking and having no support to where we have to abandon ship. Oh man, but when it worked, it worked.

    CPU steal and disk speeds are naturally going to fall for a week or two as people get settled in and also people test their virtual servers over and over.

    Of course, if it's actually impacting what you're trying to do contact us and we'll take a look.

    they developed WHCMS in depth. :D

  • How is everyone finding the CPU performance on their vps so far? I'm watching my 2 vCore system in LA taking 40mins+ to compile the ZFS module on a Debian build. I think it's normal a 5-10min exercise.

    Maybe the hosts are getting hammered with builds and benchmarks.
