Free 10 Mbit/s IPv6 VPS from Vanwa

Link

Their post indicates this is for the New Year promo, but the VPS itself should last "forever" (AKA until they're bored I guess).

After registering and provisioning for an Ubuntu 22.04, I get an email containing the account password in plaintext and the ssh root password which I entered in the provisioning process. Logging in, turns out they provision a Debian 11 instead. Which can't resolve any address since the DNS setting is configured to use the Google DNS IPv4 addresses...

Added IPv6 resolver in /etc/network/interfaces, reboot, manually edit /etc/resolv.conf (which doesn't exist before rebooting, but still contains Google IPv4 addresses). finally manages to resolve addresses, apt update & upgrade, reboot to confirm the config is not overwritten, and things seem peachy.

    So hosted on Clouvider in Dallas? :smile:

  • They gonna have a hell of a time now.
    Watch new threads popping up and people "complaining" that they got scammed and their boxes were not provisioned.

    Maybe, it could just be close to the Rack that CV has or the same DC.

    Yep. Somebody missed something. :D

  • Got one thanks. Could be useful for simple stuff like Discord bots.

    Not sure what happened with the Ubuntu image, I installed Debian 11 and was fine for the DNS front so I guess they had a mismatch somewhere.

  • Thanks.
    Select ubuntu 20.04 but got debian too 😅
    Try to reinstall it from panel with ubuntu 20.04 & succeed.

  • It got hammered as hell 😆 'apt install' crawling slowly ...

    As expected.. You can see it in bench.sh result, IO is slow.

    Would be interesting to get a Discord bot running on 512 MB RAM - considering they're generally RAM-hungry. But I know it's doable, but... discord.com only resolves to IPv4. There are ways to work around it, but it's still not officially supported, plus Voice Chats would always be IPv4. And given there's not even NAT64...

    OTOH disk allocation is quite generous, therefore they are not ssd, but hdd. As I need less disk, but faster ones, I am not in awe about this, however it is a good machine for free.

    When I think of discord bots I am imagining like Python or Node.js apps that just interface with the Discord API. To me these don't seem that RAM hungry but maybe I am unaware of other types of bots?

    Didn't think about Discord not supporting IPv6, that's unfortunate. With regards to NAT64 you can use public NAT64 services like this one: https://nat64.net/

    # curl ipinfo.io
    {
      "ip": "46.235.230.124",
      "hostname": "nat64.dyndns.dk",
      "city": "Slough",
      "region": "England",
      "country": "GB",
      "loc": "51.5095,-0.5954",
      "org": "AS44684 Mythic Beasts Ltd",
      "postal": "SL1",
      "timezone": "Europe/London",
      "readme": "https://ipinfo.io/missingauth"
    }

    Some other public NAT64 services: https://nat64.xyz/

    I guess there is also Hurricane Electric's IPv6 tunnel broker.

    LoL same here and when i ping the IP its pingable.

    Machine ordered 6 hours ago and is delivered.
    I might need more hostnames for those free servers.

    Where's the ToS & AUP regarding CPU usage etc?
    The Terms link on homepage goes back to homepage.

    Thanked by 2nick_ Shot2
  • Machine was delivered almost instantly on order. That was about ~5 hours back. Don't bother connecting immediately. The CPU steal on these free VPS'es are way too high and it will take a while to for the provisioning to complete. Can't complain though.

    Thanked by 1mrTom
  • Provision ok. Reinstall ok. Reboot ok. Decided to just turn it off. It's too d* slow (cpu or disk related ? not checking).
    Free so can't complain. Maybe check it out again next month 😅

    Same but I get ssh login prompt. But looks like it is too damn slow to even complete authentication or report as up to virtualizer

    what to ddos ? it's offline 😆 On the network side, the paid vps boast about big anti ddos protection, so no need to worry 😁 Just hope the company survive enough to fulfill the "forever" promise 😈

    Instead of NAT64, try Cloudflare warp for v4. Quite great stuff.

    Can use this for some sorta uptime monitoring ngl.
