  • Hmm, to risk identity theft for a mere $1 VPS.
It’s hard to take most companies seriously on their promises for data retention and security because past data theft events and current IT worker gossip shows no one takes this seriously enough.

Did you get any emails asking for ID proof?

Wait, isn't the promotion permanent or only US-WEST/EAST is perpetual?

it was, but they changed their mind, they are f*cking OVH they can do whatever they want, and customers are not their priority

  • Pretty sure beside US not a single other was recurrent

I had a Kimsufi/OVHCloud atom dedi (1TB) in 2021 and got a request. I used my real credentials to sign up, with a proper and still functioning credit card. I had the server up for a month before getting the ID proof request. Server was around 10% utilized for storage and some inbound traffic at that point (uploading non critical backup of raw images and videos shot by me for easy retrieval if travelling).

We have had some identity theft issues in the past due to customer data leaks (at a large bank mind you, lol), so I don’t like uploading a driver licence or passport for every thing under the sun.

Two questions if I may please.

1- Is there a limit of 1 of this special, or may I purchase in multiple regions?

2- With all the comments about asking you for your ID in the comments, I suppose that there is some past drama that I am not aware of. Will you please advise - are all new clients required to provide ID? If so, will corporate docs be an acceptable alternative?

    Hello @alento ,
    1) You can buy up to 100 VPS per region in the same first order. If you do in multiple orders, you will be considered as an existing customer form the second order and promo will not apply.
    2) Not all clients require to provide ID; however ID verification is common and also automatically triggered when our fraud mechanism detects something. Such verification is in place to make sure we are hosting legit customers and protect existing ones.

    Hope this helps, thanks

    • The recent VPS offer on the US portal (for US hosted VPS) was indeed recurrent for as long as you keep the VPS but this offer is now terminated.
    • The VPS offer currently available on other OVHcloud websites (as listed in the post) is recurring for 12 consecutive months. (VPS hosted in Australia, Singapore, Canada and few locations in Europe). Also no commitment is required in this offer, so you can keep the server for 1 month only for less than 1$, or keep it longer, or upgrade to a more powerful VPS too when needed.

They don't if you order from the US site, if you order from any other of their sites (i.e. IE, DE, etc), you can ticket in with some identity docs/proof of address & they will waive VAT for you. That's what I did with OVH IE.

I can provide such photos too, in fact, I might open a site with various pictures and info about how to combine them in order to be able to pass such idiocies.
We can crowd-create it, just need pictures of people holding blank ID sized pieces of paper and edited out face. Big resolution preferable, then I will write instructions on how to use GIMP, how to fake the JPEG data and smooth it out.

  • why I can't request forgot password, there is no email from ovh

  • I tried "Bring forward payment" for this offer a little bit, only to find the renewal price went back to $4.20. Wondering if this feature is behaving as expected?

Great offer, by the way :)
