Then leave that to me and IPXCore and wait patiently :)

  • My 32mb seems not provisioned yet. Might be done manual

Indeed, if automatic provisioning fails due to server being down, then I have to do it manually.

I think i've activated all of the ones that failed due to server down. If you haven't received your New Server Information email by the time you've read this, please send us an email/live chat/support ticket.

@LAKid when OpenVZ is shut off incorrectly (forced shut down without software shutdown) then it needs to count the disk quota when they're next started, a proper admin should always try to shutdown OpenVZ before shutting down the node, not sure if they could though since the server was locked. So it has to recount every VPS' disk quota on boot up which can take hours.

  • Well, valiant effort from Demian and Adam, although I am not entirely sure all this was necessary.

This is not the first time they were under dos attack - as we know we've seen extraordinary outage frequency in the last few monts. Yet, no protections have been put in place. No alternative data center was lined up. And yet again this has resulted in days of downtime.

Now, you may say it's not their fault they are being targetted, but I bet that even after restoring service today (5 days of downtime!) there is no plan in place in case they get dumped by a DC again.

In any case, I've restored from a (slightly stale) backup on Wednesday and got another vps up and running in a couple of hours. Then I cancelled my ipxcore payment mandate. For good.

@Ubuuntu if you ask me they should deploy their own firewall, building your own firewall with pfSense and a generally good set of rules isn't hard. You'll block most of these skid-attacks easily.

@Ubuuntu I think you don't understand why they call it an unmanaged VPS...

  • TazTaz Member

@Ubuntu sorry to say, it is not easy to have a backup DC like the way people have 2$ backup vps.

I noticed that on vmware's page here mentions that one possible reason of soft-locking is actually overcommitment (especially memory overcommitment).

  • @Damian Thank you. I got the new vps working now :)

Generally softlocks are caused by overcommitment most of the time. Its extremely easy to crash OpenVZ if you know how.

We're going to turn stock control back on til we figure out this stability issue. I'd rather not have new clients get a poor impression of our service.

The server that had the issue today was already running a bit weird, and it had a reboot coming in it's future, but I guess it couldn't wait.

@klikli @PAD: Well, good thing we're not in that boat, then.

Well that brings up the question: is he the uneaten half, or the half that has been eaten?
