Mine was deployed in about 3,5 hours after signup on node2 as well. Let's play around with it :)

    EDIT: Pretty zippy so far.

EDIT2: Interesting. Network speed isn't great, but very acceptable. There is absolutely zero SSH lag, which is a first for me.

My lunch is usually some kind of meat (chicken, pork, beef) with potatoes or rice, some sauce and vegetables (peas and carrots mostly) for around 2-3€ at my university's cafeteria.

In there (Finland) pricing is very similar and typical food list seems like this.

@Chronic said: Free education for the win! Hooray!

Studying in university in Finland is free (only if you are from EU/EFTA) but you must pay membership fee (about 100 €/year) to student union one time per year.

    Write failed: Broken pipe

The broken pipe is most likely because I didn't do anything in that terminal and some tests took too long to complete, so the SSH session died. It seems the network speed isn't particularly bad, and I think the issue is mostly with very strong fluctuations in speed.

Not bad at all for a free VPS.

My VPS on Node2 is acting up (up/down and so on).

Atleast reinstallation works but then the VPS won't come back and their SolusVM is insanely slow for some reason.

As always Node2 went down on sunday again :(.

My instance got deployed on Node4 and apart from an initial delay in getting the VPS booted, it's been pretty decent for a free service. Only issue i can see is the incorrect clock; adjusting the timezone still puts it about 2hrs a few minutes out - guessing this can't be corrected from within the container, rather it has to be done on the host?.

i did "apt-get update" and not yet finished after 15min. is there a way to make that fast?

better try this step for any busy directory http://www.chrisnewland.com/using-linux-tmpfs-to-reduce-disk-writes-for-power-saving-and-longer-cf-lifespan-186

Try running it with GNU screen next time, so you can disconnect and it will be resumable afterwards ;)

  • Mine was down for most of the night after I got it, but now it's up and seems to be working well. Performance is generally in line with what everyone else has advised.

    Node2 is back online!

I'm on node2, it goes offline very often,
    ssh hangs too

i'm on node 2, and it is stable =/

edit: yeah it is lagging, but not offline

  • yomeroyomero Member

    So, lagging
    Not worth the trouble :P

I think the only useful free VPS has been Amanah Tech's offer

  • DomDom Member

@Night said: I think the only useful free VPS has been Amanah Tech's offer

Are they still doing this offer? (can't see anything on their site)

  • proteusproteus Member

With such an offer, it is only a matter of days before their nodes are abused. I would treat these as unstable until they get some checks and balances in place.

  • NightNight Member

@Dom It used to be here https://support.amanah.com/cart.php?gid=14 but it isn't anymore.

And just for comparison, node vps3 at Amanah:

(the 12 day uptime is from a reboot that I did, uptime is very stable on their end.)

*edited to show correct I/O speed

I remember when Host1Free Offered 3 month trial VPS's and you had to pay $1 to activate it. Just signed up for this offer, might use it for DNS or backups.

@u4ia said: And just for comparison, node vps3 at Amanah:

Your io speed ]for Amanah is incorrect. You exceed your quota during dd and the reported output is incorrect. Check the free space you have with df -h and run a test again with file size that is less than the free space you have by reducing the count, eg: dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=4k conv=fdatasync

@vahe Here's the result with your corrections on my Amanah VPS:

It is still decent for being completely free.

    CPU model : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz
    Number of cores : 4
    CPU frequency : 2394.063 MHz
Total amount of ram : 128 MB
Total amount of swap : 0 MB
    System uptime : 36 days, 10:16,
    Download speed : (10.4MB/s)
    I/O speed : 46.9MB/s

@Night said: It is still decent for being completely free.

Agree, I'd say Host1Free's io is also decent for being free.

Quite right, sir, thanks. I forgot there is not enough space for the standard dd :)
    Corrected stat: 49.0 MB/s
