Damn.. a week and still not validated.. I dont know whether they validate or reject my id.. no response received -_-
i3 in France is available if anyone is interested.
so, what's the situation here?
dang hope they restock the atoms soon..
Finally got a KS2 a few mins ago, it was available for a whole 3 minutes. I'll edit this post with my HDD age in a bit.
Here is some dd stuff:
5 euro servers in-stock.
Just got another one! I think I need help! lol, can't stop buying these darn things.
Yeah this is making me take a long hard look at some VPSes which I did not think I will ever cancel, when those "awesome deal" discounted VPSes now end up costing like 40-50% of the price of this dedi, makes me wonder if those deals are really that awesome anymore, and do I really need them (nope actually I don't).
@rm_
Yup!.. at these prices, I think it even beats hosting from home, considering you need to the purchase the hardware and pay for monthly power and internet bill.
I feel your pain, trust me. I use them though lol.
Is just now available ?
OVH do not permit illegal torrent.
Guys, do you think any Canadian ks1 will be available anytime soon ?
They offered it at the first week only! Since that time they are out of stock.
Depends on who lets them go in the next month
They offered it at the first week only!
It was just a display error, and they refunded everyone who ordered those.

Almost anything beats hosting at home, unless you need to be sure nobody looks at your data (unless hacked). I mean, you can have VPSes at 1 $ a month and below with usually more traffic than your poor home connection can handle and you dont have to keep any computer running and eat power (though, with atoms, j1800, brazos you can have decent performance at low power usage).
On the other hand, a VPS will give better performance than an atom, unless really oversold, it is faster to deploy, faster to reinstall, you dont have to worry about hardware failure, you can use your own kernel without forfeiting the hardware replacement time.
OVH strong plus for dedis vs low end VPS:
-UNLIMITED TRAFFIC Really;
-No issues with load (dedi, not shared);
-DDoS protection included;
-Large storage space.
Plus:
-Decent hardware and replacement time;
-Relatively good network.
Minus:
-You are just a number, support is sketchy at best;
-At least in the past customers were looked down to, at least for cheap dedis, but also for some of the more expensive deals from direct experience;
-Everchanging rules and conditions;
-Low IP availability, even paid for some products;
-Lower performance (100 mbps ports, lower disk speed, no raid, slow core(s) for atoms/old celerons ).
That being said, 5 Eur is a good price for what you get, excellent, I might say, these are toys in their point of view and you should treat them as such
They don't promote but most of the seedboxes are hosted on it.
Can you explain what do you mean by this? I'm not aware of any limitations on using custom kernels on OVH servers. Their monitoring system ("rtm") runs from crontab every minute by default, and I think it works with any kernel (but I turn it off anyway, so can't be certain).
-At least in the past customers were looked down
Yep and their current experiment in this area is "all support is only via a (public) forum" (for Kimsufi). Perhaps they hope customers will start answering each other's questions, without needing to have each and every question handled by staff. Not sure if this makes any sense or how well this will work out for them.
Okay, will it work with BSD? Windows? Perhaps, if you install it and maybe tweak it but you will never know if the info sent is registering correctly or if it is sent at all, but on a VPS that is not an issue, the host handles everything much faster (well, a decent host) some even have backups for disaster recovery and/or give you backup space.
Humour fail :-/
Well okay, that's one broad definition of "your own kernel".
Well I don't think you are giving a fair impression on comparing a VPS which is just a slice of the pie in a shared environment to say running your own dedi with everything dedicated to you with hosting from home..
Not to get into too much detail, but I was basing my comment on the fact that the bare minimum operating cost for you to host this from home compared to what OVH is charging for a similar setup, it would probably end up costing you more.
I would say that on average this setup would use about 60 watt of power per month.. looking at Google it seems to suggest that running a 60 watt bulb 24/7 would run you about $5/mo, give or take a couple of dollars, and my ISP charges around $1.5/mo for 1 Pv4 with Native IPv6 being free.. So without calculating for bandwidth and what you paid for hardware the total is already $6.5 vs what I pay at $7.x with OVH.. you can see the potential for saving is very minimal.
Now compare this to say WSI who sell a similar service for $25/mo or other providers who charge up to $50/mo for a similar setup.. granted they offer 5 IP's so your minimum cost would be raised to $12.5 so that will still leave you with $12.5 give or take a few $ which would be your potential for savings.
Again I'm just being general here..
In this case, I should grab one ks1 either at GRA or SBG
Indeed. I am not comparing it to running from home, I specifically said almost everything is better than running from home in terms of costs, even when i have 1 gbps line.
However, a VPS is different, might not have same disk, same unlimited traffic, same memory, but there are VPSes with 1$ a month which have faster CPU, 1 gbps port to boost speed when needed, for example, and costs 7 times less. Now, it depends what you need, a KS-1 might be better than such a VPS if you are using it for illegal stuff as long as OVH allows it or you really need that traffic for legit purposes. I say it is great price for great traffic and storage, but it is not the solution for everything.
...and where do you think that unlimited traffic comes from? Does it just drop from the sky? Yea I know they supposedly have 50million Gigawatts of bandwidth blah blah. They also have thousands of people signing up for these things using up all kinds of bandwidth for who knows what.
All those servers are going to attract all kinds of attacks which again uses up all kinds of bandwidth. For the price it's good right now as long as the connection is good and fast. Sooner or later it probably won't be.
Well thats new.
sigh still waiting for a KS1 to become available sucks this deal came out when I was away on vacation.
Look, I know that is unsustainable and it is somewhat subsidised. However, they can do it at least in part and at least for now, so, yeah, it works, good for them
On Kimsufi.com/ie/:
Stocks are currently being replenished.New availability in a few hours.
Another another note, best OVH Datacentre next to BHS?
