Update: 9 days after the strikes

Hi everyone, VSYS Host here with an update on our recovery.

    Timeline so far:
    * Sept 23: both Kyiv data centers hit by Russian missile strikes.
    * Sept 25: most virtual services running again in a new secure facility in Ukraine.
    * Sept 28: all VPS fully restored.
    * Oct 1: hosting back online.
    * Oct 2: first dedicated servers being restored in the new facility.

Virtual services: VPS and hosting are fully back. Xtream UI Panel Cloud is still in progress and should be back soon.

    Dedicated servers follow two paths:

Intact hardware: being moved to the new facility. The first servers are already being restored, and we're contacting customers individually as each one becomes ready.
Possible water exposure: retrieved and on the way to technical inspection. These can't be powered on before inspection without risking the drives. No confirmed data loss so far.

Replacement servers: some customers asked to move to our other locations in the meantime, so some configurations there are temporarily out of stock. New hardware is expected next week.

Data access for dedicated servers still waiting: we're working on a way to let customers copy data before full restoration. Realistically, at least a few weeks. We'll reach out directly, so there's no need to open a ticket about it.

Status of your services: each affected service now has its own status in the client area.

    Full update: https://vsys.host/news/nine-days-after-the-strikes-how-vsys-host-is-bringing-kyiv-back-online

Thank you to everyone who has been patient with us and supported our team. We'll keep posting updates here. For anything specific to your servers, please use a ticket.

    Greetings,

A total of 25 of my dedicated servers were affected by these attacks. Most critically, one of these servers hosted thousands of my customers and handled a continuous, real-time data stream; unfortunately, 24-hour backups are not sufficient to recover the situation.

Out of these 25 servers, I urgently need the database data from just one specific server. I am in a dire situation: my project has been offline for five days, I have been losing money daily, and today I received even worse news.

My investor has stated that if I do not get the project back online with the latest data by September 29th, they will withdraw completely, and the project will be cancelled entirely. My livelihood depends 100% on this project.

I am fully aware of the magnitude of this disaster and have expressed my readiness to provide whatever support—financial or otherwise—is within my power. However, I have yet to reach a resolution. Could you please check this ticket number?

Hi, thank you for reaching out, and we truly understand how critical this situation has been for you and your project. We've checked your ticket, and we're glad to see that your request has been resolved. Ive a question. What in the last 4 years made you think that hosting data in an active warzone is a smart decision?

I have been using them for over 10 years, and I hadn't experienced any uptime issues at all in the last 4 years.
Things were working fine with my backups, but the situation is now critical; since the data has been evolving in real-time recently, I need the latest data from my server.

Thank you for being with us for over 10 years, it truly means a lot to us. We understand how important your latest data is. Please send us a private message here with your ticket number, so we can check the status of your case.

Many people don't even know what dedicated servers are; many have over 100 TB of storage set up and talk as if they could just switch to another provider. Regarding Vsys: the fact that there has been only one update in a week is an absolute outrage—leaving customers in the lurch like this. Option A: They claim the servers were exposed to water (it feels like the servers were destroyed and are no longer usable), but they won't admit it—or rather, they are spreading chaos among customers. Option B: All other hosting providers were attacked too, but they reacted quickly and regained customer trust, whereas Vsys is handling the situation very poorly; tickets aren't being answered, and the chat isn't working at all. We just want information.

We appreciate the detailed analysis, but we can offer an Option C: no conspiracy, just a lot of work 🙂

The servers in that facility were not destroyed. They've been retrieved and are going through technical inspection before being powered on, so we don't risk drives.

As for tickets: we're pretty sure we've replied to yours. Send us your ticket number via private message, and we'll check it right now.

For vsys business in Ukraine is over. They know that. There is no guarantee that new attack won’t destroy new data center or electrical / network infra. Unless they transfer whole business outside Ukraine - they are not relible provider. A very sad, but true situation.

We've already moved to a new secure facility in Ukraine, chosen specifically for its security profile, and our locations outside Ukraine have been running normally throughout all of this. So whichever option our customers prefer, we've got them covered. 🙂

You guys shouldn't fault people for using VSYS (or any other UA host). If you use a company for a long time, and the country the company is in is being attacked, most people probably wouldn't leave if they're satisfied with the company. Imagine if every client cancelled when UA was attacked? Every host would be out of business. So if anything you'd probably prefer to use them to support them. Despite the years of Russia attacking civilians, they only recently started attacking private datacenters. This is why backups are important.. (and a recovery plan)

Anyway, hopefully nobody has any important data hosted in datacenters in Moscow.

When will you start respecting your customers by replying to their tickets and providing regular updates, as any professional company should?

You post an update every five days and leave your customers completely in the dark, without properly considering the difficult situation they are facing.

What is even more concerning is that, despite the fact that the issue is on your side, you still force us to wait for the Sales Department and only during business hours.

Do you really consider this an acceptable level of respect toward your customers?

I also find it outrageous that they can't stand by the situation and release updates. Other data centers already have their new facilities up and running, whereas vSys just keeps sending automated ticket responses. Some people are told it will be ready in a few weeks, others hear it will take a month, and some customers get no information at all—so how are we supposed to react? Without an official update, we’re just left with more questions about their service.

They updated their webpage yesterday, stating that users could submit a support ticket if they needed access to their data. However, after I submitted a ticket, their reply was identical to the one from the 26th: once a new data center is secured, they will develop a procedure to allow users to back up their data. When I asked for an estimated timeframe, the response was that there is no estimate. Consequently, I have given up hope and am currently rebuilding my business on a different server using a backup from August.

Thank you for sharing this. There's no new update for your server yet, so the information you received still stands: we're working on a way to let customers copy their data before full restoration, and realistically this will take at least a few weeks.

We understand why rebuilding from your backup makes sense for you right now, and we hope it goes smoothly.

    Hi everyone,

Many of you have been affected by the outage in Kyiv or have seen it discussed here, so we want to give you a clear picture of what happened and where recovery stands.

    What happened

On September 23, the first Russian missile strike hit one of data centers. A few hours later, the second one was hit, and then hit again. Both are now out of operation for an indefinite period.

These were not isolated hits. The strikes also affected other data centers where we have no equipment. This was a wider attack on data center infrastructure.

    Condition of the equipment

In the first hours we had no physical access to our hardware and could only rely on information from the data center teams. Once our engineers reached the sites:

    • In data center 1, 100% of our equipment is physically intact.
    • In data center 2, our equipment also survived, but some hardware shows signs of water exposure. These servers need to be inspected before they can be powered on, otherwise recoverable hardware could be damaged.

    Virtual services

Rather than waiting for the original facilities to reopen, we moved our virtual infrastructure to another data center selected for its security profile. The majority of affected virtual services are already running there.

Work on the rest continues, and we expect 100% of them to be restored within the nearest few days.

    Dedicated servers

This is the harder part. Dedicated servers are the hardware itself, so they have to be physically moved to another facility before they can run again, and we're talking about a very large fleet.

The new facility needs enough space, power, cooling, connectivity and staff to take this volume. It also must not carry an unacceptable risk of a missile strike. We won't move customer infrastructure to the first facility that happens to have space.

We haven't secured such a facility yet, so there is no ETA for dedicated server restoration. We'd rather not give a date we can't stand behind. Once a facility is confirmed, servers will be relocated and restored progressively.

In parallel, we're working on a way for customers to copy their data from dedicated servers before full restoration. We'll contact affected customers directly once a workable process is ready.

    Other locations

VSYS Host is fully operational. Support is available, and our locations outside Ukraine are running normally. We're seeing a lot of migration requests, so some dedicated configurations outside Ukraine may soon be temporarily out of stock. If you're planning to move, open a ticket and we'll check what's available.

    Full incident report: https://vsys.host/news/two-kyiv-data-centers-hit-within-hours-incident-report-and-recovery-status

We'll keep this thread updated as things progress. Happy to answer general questions here.

Thank you to everyone who has been patient with us.

We've been working through these days without a break to bring everything back, and we'll keep going until every service is restored.

Thank you for your patience, your support, and every kind word we've received. It means a lot to us right now.

**What did you start this thread for? **
There’s no news, and some customers are being ignored—there’s no ETA.

Their website says they’ve been around since 2009; how does a company that’s been in business for nearly 20 years fail to release any updates?

We started this thread to keep everyone updated, and we have been: two detailed updates on our website, both linked here, plus a summary in this thread just a few posts above.

As for ETAs, here's where things stand: VPS and hosting are fully back, dedicated servers are being restored gradually, and data access for servers still waiting is realistically at least a few weeks away. Each affected service also has its own status in the client area.

And yes, after so many years in business, this is the first time both of our data centers were hit by missiles on the same day. We're handling it as fast as we safely can.

I think exactly the same thing—that the servers are destroyed. They’re just claiming it’s an inspection or something because they don’t want to admit outright that the servers—or rather, all the data—are gone.

Great storyline, honestly, but reality is a bit less cinematic 🙂

The servers aren't buried under ruins: they've been retrieved. VPS and hosting are fully back, and the first dedicated servers are already online in our new secure facility. With the number of physical servers involved, bringing all of them back simply takes more time.

As for the inspection, it's not a cover story. Some servers may have been exposed to water, and powering them on before checking could damage drives. So we check first.

That's good info. The problem is VSYS's responses they're not giving any clarity, not answering anyone, and not updating the threads they created and called official. I've always been in favor of waiting and being patient because this isn't their fault, but they aren't doing their part to give users peace of mind. They just keep sending canned responses to everyone. What happened is unfortunate, but the way they're handling the situation is even worse.

Thank you for being patient with us from the start, and for the honest feedback. You're right that clear communication matters as much as the recovery itself, and we hear you.

We'll keep posting updates in this thread more regularly. And if your ticket didn't get a clear answer, send us the number via private message, and we'll look at it.

Exactly. I completely understand that this was an exceptional event and that inspecting potentially water-exposed hardware takes time. I don’t blame VSYS for what happened, and I am prepared to wait if necessary.

The difficult part is having no visibility at all.

My servers have been showing “Awaiting Inspection” for days, and support cannot tell me whether they are 10th or 500th in the inspection queue, whether inspections are currently taking place, or even approximately how many dedicated servers have already been inspected.

    Even something as simple as:

“Inspections have started, X servers have been checked so far, and we are processing approximately X servers per day”

    would make a huge difference.

I don’t need a guarantee or an exact ETR. I just need to know that the process is actually moving forward.

In my particular case, I don’t even need the entire server restored. I mainly need one SQL backup from the storage.

I really hope VSYS starts providing some concrete progress updates, even if the news is simply that recovery will take longer than expected.

Thank you. We'll take it into account and see how we can share more visible progress on the inspections in our next updates.

What about DC2 servers are they damaged no more hope after water exposed we dont know when it will come online ?

The servers from that facility have been retrieved and are going through technical inspection before being powered on, because switching them on too early could damage the drives. At this stage, there is no confirmed data loss, but the condition of each server's drives will only be known once its inspection is completed.

As for when they'll be back: realistically, this will take at least a few weeks.

  • Hello everyone,

I’ve been a VSYS Host customer for almost 5 years, and I’d like to share a few words based on my own experience.

Throughout these years, VSYS has been an important part of my business. Their services have always been very stable, outages were extremely rare in my experience, and whenever I needed support, their team was cooperative, professional, and usually very quick to respond. This is one of the main reasons I’ve continued working with them for so many years.

When I first noticed some of my services offline after the recent incident, I opened a ticket before I knew what had happened. Once I learned about the strikes and understood the situation, I decided simply to wait. I even told them I wouldn’t keep adding replies or asking for ETAs because I didn’t want to put additional pressure on the team.

Some of my dedicated servers in DC1 are still offline, but thankfully the hardware survived and is waiting for relocation and restoration.

Of course, this situation has affected my business, but five years of good experience cannot be erased by one extraordinary event that was completely outside their control.

For me, VSYS is not just another provider that I can judge based on one difficult week. After all these years, they have become a significant part of my infrastructure and my work, and I have decided to stay with them and continue supporting them through this situation.

I’ve seen how reliable and cooperative this team has been during normal times, so I believe they deserve patience when facing circumstances like these.

I sincerely hope to see my servers back online soon, and I wish the entire VSYS team safety and success with the recovery. I’m staying with you. ❤️

It's 11:53 PM here in Ukraine, Saturday night. I'm sitting here going through tickets and the messages I can reach in this thread, and then I came across yours.

Messages like this aren't just nice words to us.

Let me also share my personal opinion. As someone inside the team, I'm honestly amazed by the people I work with. I find it hard to imagine many teams pulling together like this under such circumstances, working day and night. And I mean that literally.

The people at VSYS truly love VSYS Host. I believe that's exactly why our service has been good all these years: we love what we do. And right now, everyone is giving everything they've got, for the company and for our customers.

Thank you for staying with us. It means more than you know. And believe me, it only gets better from here. ❤️
