@forest said: I wonder what the legality is of providing terms in a contract that you can't legally enforce in some countries, while still allowing people to sign up from those countries. For example, allowing people in country X to sign up despite Stripe not supporting country X. I assume that would make that part of the contract unconscionable.

The law of the company prevails always and your stripe example does not invalidate anything.

They just put up a fat AD on LES, I think he is already looking for new customers.

In compliance with applicable European regulations regarding security, transparency, and the prevention of illicit activities, our organization is required to perform a customer identity verification process (KYC - Know Your Customer).
We kindly ask you to complete the verification process via the following secure link: verify stripe com / xxxx
The procedure is guided, fully secure, and will only take a few minutes.
Please note that completing this process is a mandatory legal requirement. Failure to complete or fully finalize the verification within 10 days of this notification will result in the closure of your account and the termination of all provided services, pursuant to applicable law and contract terms.
If you have already submitted your documents or require any technical assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our support team.

    Sincerely,

    The Compliance Team

@Calypso said: KYC can be done in other ways as this

For example, Stripe can handle automated processes efficiently.

PayPal has proven to be an unreliable payment gateway, from personal experience, after selling an unwanted item on eBay and using shipping with tracking and a required signature, PayPal still proceeded to investigate a chargeback when the buyer claimed non-receipt, despite the signature clearly displaying the recipient’s full name.

    Hi,

just in case you seriously believe their statement that this is a requirement in europe?

    Then:

Hey, behind you is elon musk! Riding on a unicorn in the shape of trump waving the russian flag and distributing chinese fleyers!

Did you turn around? Yes? Well, then you are just lost. If not, then there is still hope :D

    As to the case:

IF this is a company from EU, then perfect.

    • Cancel your contract referring to the newly requirement that was no requirement when making the contract.

    • Asking for a pro-rata refund

They refused to give it or did not give after 3 months?

You can proof that it was you who has control over the payment source?

    You are a EU citizen?

=> File a police case against them
=> open a thread ( if not existing yet ) here in the forum with the casenumber and policestation address
=> watch the thread and update your police case sharing new casenumbers to the police treating your own case

If this is done by 10-20+ people then this will be considered a organised crime and that WILL trigger serious police action in any european country. And that will probably hurt. Jail-like hurt. Usually no one will do that and just refund.

But the requirement for this all is, that people really do file something at police - and not just mimimi about it ;-)

    Hi,

    nice nice!

Maybe we should make a contest who can get closest to the requirements and i will sponsor a mid size VPS for 1 year as a winning price or so :-)

  • @layer7 said: Usually no one will do that

same as filing a police report. Nobody will do it for $7/y server and we have seen it (boloxmedia, for example). People may sign petition dot org because it is quick and lazy...

Important news, dont miss. From OGF

        Hello,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Please consider the following points:
Targeted Verification: Enhanced KYC (Know Your Customer) verification is not being requested for all accounts.
It applies only to specific accounts flagged by system alerts or other compliance triggers.
        Legal and Regulatory Compliance:
Dasabo is legally headquartered in Italy and holds a Ministry-issued telecommunications license to serve retail, corporate, and public sector clients.
To maintain these certifications, Italian and European laws require us to keep accurate, up-to-date customer identity data.
This requirement is also clearly outlined in our Terms of Service, which customers accept when placing an order.
        Verification Status:
The vast majority of negative feedback regarding this policy stems from users who registered with false data.
Conversely, hundreds of legitimate customers completed the KYC check seamlessly within the first 24 hours without issue.
        Proportionate Standards:
Enhanced identity verification is standard practice across industries such as banking, telecommunications, utilities, or auto sales.
As a regulated company, Dasabo is subject to the same legal obligations to ensure security and compliance.
        Data Security & Privacy:
To ensure the highest privacy and security standards, we partner with Stripe Identity, a certified third-party vendor.
Once verified, user data is encrypted and obfuscated to prevent unauthorized access or disclosure.
Company Investment: KYC verification is not free; it represents a direct operational cost for Dasabo.
We absorb this expense solely to fulfill our statutory obligations under applicable law.

We appreciate your understanding as we work to maintain a secure and fully compliant platform for all our users.

It applies only to specific accounts flagged by system alerts or other compliance triggers.

There is absolutely nothing I've done that would "trigger" this. In fact, I think I only ever idled my Dasabo VPS. I paid using a credit card through Stripe, so it's not like it'd be hard to find me.

I let my Dasabo VPS expire last year after all the drama about new payment methods needed, Dasabo acquiring Dasabo, the announcement that prices would increase on renewal, etc.
