    UP-Network never ended up responding.

I ended up going with Packetra (YABS) for €325.26/3yr with 1 vCPU, 1.5 GB RAM, 5 GB storage, and 100 Mbps unmetered bandwidth. They're a PrivateLayer reseller. Definitely not cheap, but at least cheaper than some alternatives.

holy personally would be hesitant about locking in for 3 yrs with a new provider that launched in January of this year..

I like giving providers a chance, and a big upfront payment is a good way to help them grow. Plus they're a reseller so they don't even have to do much to keep up their own network.

    I hope they don't deadpool.

I figure payments like this are the best way to help prevent them from deadpooling. Of course, tragedy of the commons always strikes, and it's useless unless everyone does it (me prepaying for 3 years instead of 6 months isn't going to be the tiebreaker between deadpooling and surviving). But if they do deadpool, I'll survive. With backups, of course!

@concept, every hosts had a period where they made net loss because of the overhead. Those long term payment enables them to survive past the deadpool zone and reach profitability.

Exactly. And this one seems to focus on privacy, so they deserve a good chance more than most.

Now I'm no saint and if I found a much cheaper host that was good I might have gone for them instead, but I'm not about to nickle and dime in this scenario when none of the options are cheap.

Estimated monthly spend: $300-400. But, people got $200/m monthly ai subs, right?

I (usually) follow a simple rule with long-term advance payments:
if (now - startup) div PaymentPeriod >= 3 then OK , meaning that they need to be existing at least three times longer than the payment period. So I would not consider an offer with a 3 year advance payment unless that provider is on the market for more than (consecutive) 9 years.

That's of course no guarantee but it seems to be reasonable compromise that worked well so far.

That's definitely a safe and reasonable heuristic. What I do is certainly higher-risk.

BuyVM is heavily over-represented on the Tor network, which is my usecase.

  • It also doesn't help that buyvm is always out of stock :(

Yeah but your situation is tighter because so many providers do not support/tolerate TOR, not even relays, so I think it's understandable that you take a higher risk (and are willing to pay more).

Actually I find that the biggest issue is just bandwidth (Tor uses a lot and easily blows past most FUPs intended for websites). It used to be that most providers were afraid of Tor, but now it's actually really rare that I find one that doesn't allow any relays. There's only a small handful on LET that don't allow it.

yea the tor bw usage is insane. Maybe I should buy a GTHost Zurich Dedicated for the 2G unmetered and start selling Tor Relay VPS hosting.
