I figure payments like this are the best way to help prevent them from deadpooling. Of course, tragedy of the commons always strikes, and it's useless unless everyone does it (me prepaying for 3 years instead of 6 months isn't going to be the tiebreaker between deadpooling and surviving). But if they do deadpool, I'll survive. With backups, of course!
@concept, every hosts had a period where they made net loss because of the overhead. Those long term payment enables them to survive past the deadpool zone and reach profitability.

Exactly. And this one seems to focus on privacy, so they deserve a good chance more than most.
Now I'm no saint and if I found a much cheaper host that was good I might have gone for them instead, but I'm not about to nickle and dime in this scenario when none of the options are cheap.

I (usually) follow a simple rule with long-term advance payments:
if
(now - startup) div PaymentPeriod >= 3 then OK, meaning that they need to be existing at least three times longer than the payment period. So I would not consider an offer with a 3 year advance payment unless that provider is on the market for more than (consecutive) 9 years.That's of course no guarantee but it seems to be reasonable compromise that worked well so far.
