you don't have to explain anything here, because this thread is not about west versus east. you should understand that even if you despise the west, because it has something to do with at least normal intelligence.

I was asked directly about our company's policy regarding porn and gay content. I do not despise the West, it is impossible to despise something like the Earth.
I despise some people in the West and Russia and in other countries.

but the audience is still expecting some kind of follow-up! @CharityHost_org has demonstrably acted at least dubiously here. @CharityHost_org reputation has rightly been damaged.

Well the main drama going on right now is @CharityHost_org taking a look at it's customers files, citing "adult content" reasons

no matter who you despise or not, probably very few people in this thread are interested in that either. if you let yourself be distracted by questions that have no place in the thread... well... you could also clarify it directly with the person asking. this is not about gay stuff but about something else.

    Or maybe not intentionally?

For example, if I create a hacker app on the server to hack everyone I can, in the end the person who RENT me the server catches me and then people on LET ask the seller of the server how he found out that I have a hacker app on the server he rented me and they attack him for that, because he browses in privacy. Come on, please!

You can think in multiverse whatever you want. But fact is moderators shouldn’t close the thread before take the final decision as @DP said earlier. Main thing is the guy (me) violate the tos but provider also violate the tos by invade privacy+asked for money. Thats why this thread come to 20 page.
Your example is irrelevant. Hacking and porn storing isn't same at all.

In order to make a final decision, one key aspect is required.

Did you keep the files in public folder?

Think carefully because if the answer is no, then it may become devastating in terms of reputation for Charityhost.

I dont understand why it’s matter for a ftp account where domain is invalid (ftp.username.com). Yes i did store on public folder because its a ftp account which can't accessible from web.

You had a strong case but lost it here.

The snooping allegation won't be appropriate against CH now in my opinion. It was in public folder so regardless of whether domain name was valid or invalid, it does gives room to the provider to poke his nose.

    This needs full context

if the files are in public_html, does it actually resolve to anything to be publicly viewed.

I have had storage from providers in the past it has had things like dummydomain67876587.com which unless you buy that and direct it who is going to know that exists on that server even if it is in a public_html folder does not mean the public can see it.

The fact the provider has been warned for months about snooping and possibly because this involved porn the customer would pay up, say nothing out of possible embarrassment is something I would question too

I think someone in this thread said that public_html is the only folder that you can actually upload your files to, so you might be forced to upload it under that folder. But @bdspice needs to confirm officially

Either way imo the "we will make an exception for you" followed by the $25 is a red flag.

How lucky of OP to win a prize and get given an exception for a $25 fee that could definitely be free, and they also call themselves Charity Host. It is a bit funny isn't it.

And the snooping bit is the icing on the top. "Have some free storage lucky winner but let's see what's in it plz"

I would not think it alters the case since if you sign up to a service that states FTP storage you would not expect it to include a port 80/443 web service by defintion

CH have really need to stop, learn and review everything, even asking chatgpt a few questions would help them fix their issues instead of feeling they know everything and have unfiltered access to anything without permission.

What if a person had a personal medical report and stored it on a "secure FTP storage" for backup, and called it "document" as a default that MS word does if you do not set the name yourself, if the provider decides what is in that document they have no right unless

    a)CSAM flag/report
b)malware flag by software such as imunify or others
c)direct report of abuse within the account

none of these apply, it feel more a chancer trying to extract money from a customer on a free account.

What would happen if the customer filed a complain with the trading standards or the equal to in that state, this company could be heavily fined at the least

  • Interesting event.

I had recently signed up at CharityHost to get storage but I am so glad I didn't go through with it and have now requested account deletion.

FTP storage is just that storage it shouldn't be publicly available and if it is then that's a configuration error which should have been addressed rather than the situation that has occurred.

Seems pretty clear that they snoop around files so I would also assume they snoop around emails so that's a big red flag for me.

before have read so many about free hosting, they give you free but they get into your account and steal your script or something. now this is really happening.

even worse that this hosting is provide pay hosting service. just coincidence the one he try to "extorted" is the free one that win the free give away and he speak up to the forum.

Yes. But ChairtyHost is very cleverly promoting that package as shared hosting in order to put that criteria so that they can call it "public".
