Here is YABS for my $18.63/year vir**** VPS

Nice beast if you are allowed to use it.

Windows 11 Enterprise OS with SQL Server database server running on that vps

Have you tried allowing it to beat the shit out of it's swap and cpu for an hour?

it is $18 / year VPS .... not the $5/month one and should be used accordingly
Using VPS for students database projects

I try to keep average cpu utilization around 20%

Possibly students don't run queries much or you don't have enough data, or queries are more IO bound rather CPU bound.

This is for entry to mid level advanced SQL queries. Typical database size is upto 1 GB with focus on using advanced concepts such as ROW_NUMBER() optimizations

Load up few gigabytes data, allow joins, sorting, analytical queries with group by, add up custom aggregators etc. 😊 then run parallel queries.

Do you really expect $18/year VPS to use for such size database? I have VDS for that purpose. And never had any problems

Even with 1 gb dataset, if many parallel requests get executed over at same time, the CPU usage spike increase. Instead of one student, if there are 10 students or 10 scripts or 10 tests or 10 reports request came in, it just spike CPU. Very difficult to know when or where CPU spike happen. You take much higher VPS from Virmach, whether it is 8 gb or more 512 mb or low, 1 core or 4 cores, the story is same with them.

Ideally you cannot predict application use of CPU all time consistently, Virmach suspension will pose great risk for projects. Instead of 18 usd, one may opt into different providers in LET, or more reliable one, we could be better.

Well, again, if the use case involves unpredictable cpu spikes that can go beyond AUP, use VDS

Another factor for consideration, sql server db express can use only 1 vCore …. so create 3 db server instances on 4x vCores VPS and divide the load between three sql instances on that VPS.

Well, the AUP is really strict though, more than 300MB/sec for 10 minutes and you are toast.
You done it for hours, so yea.

Same issue I had on microLXC, people adding swap files to run fucking docker on 256MB KVM.
Pain in the arse, I can understand virmach here.

What I actually care about is their blackmail.

I dunno if it’s blackmail that’s like me getting my car clamped parking in the wrong place and saying the same thing when they ask for money to take it off.

But anyway I read on the other forum not long ago Virmach say they might look into their suspension fee because it isn’t working out very well. But this was on the promo thread I’ve no idea if the promo servers have like a 100usd fee to unsuspend

Did you feel happy when you paid your car bill?

Haha not that I’ve had it happen but probably not. I just use my virmach servers for rdp. But I wasn’t aware there’s a download/upload limit on speed I thought it was just cpu restriction.

You obviously don't know virmach... The whole system just generates random spec VPS offers every couple of hours. Occasionally they're tempting, but usually they're pretty stupid combos and not worth the money. I regret not jumping on a 10TB bandwidth in Tokyo early on that was actually a pretty good price, never seen a deal that good pop up again.

its a very good deal when its working since all Virmach are Ryzen. very often during the sale i was also close to buying many.
