Virmach, not recommended for 2025

I don't like to speak publicly normally, but since the ticket is closed and I am **not allowed ** to reply on it. I guess I can only do this to give him an answer:

My answer is #4, that's shame on me for trusting Virmach.

For people who might want some popcorn:

What's running on the server?

ans: A nextcloud instant run by caprover

How many users are using that nextcloud?

ans: 2

What activity triggers the ban?

ans: I was doing webdav to webdav backups, which was causing “IO abuse”. I found that it was using more memory than I expected, so I stopped the synchronization and focused on other non-host-related things.

Here is my resource usage monitor record by hetrixtools:

For users that are preparing to host a service >= nextcloud, Virmach is not recommended. I have my backup, so I am chill. If you don't have your own backup, you will need to accept his blackmail. You've been warned.

Maybe it's my fault, but I don't recommend it; that's my conclusion.

Don't expect any response, and even if he unsuspended it, I won't use it. He had exhausted all trust over the years.
but I feel like I have the responsibility to warn others.

  • You surprised literally noone with this post.

VirMach is known to sell VMs that you are not actually supposed to nor are you allowed to use. If you go even slightly above their insane and unreasonable fair share limits, they'll do exactly this...

    Nothing's new, don't buy VirMach

  • What an asshole response holy shit.

It's okay, this is a learning experience. I hope you had backups. Next time, you will be wiser when choosing.

    Always have backups.

I have never been their customer, thanks to people like you that share their experiences. Recently they come back with their offers on OGF and they’re very tempting. Luckily I didn’t buy any and your experience shows they’re still the same Virmache.

Its really a hit/miss with virmache.

Have been a customer for years. Been always treated fairly. They even handle support tickets within reasonable time for me.

Not using it for anything resources heavy which helps I guess and only need minor support for issues on their side.

    Anyway, use them and expect:

    • loads of ip renumbering
    • downtime, have a plan in order.
    • unfriendly support, quite passive aggressive.

They have some offers you won't find anywhere else but if you keep an eye out you can mostly get the same specs from better hosts these days.

Same. I wanted to get rid of them this year but ended up buying some more. Just some monitors and slaves, nothing breaking my setup when they go down.

The company survived surprisingly long imo.

Only thing speaking for them is that they are quite open about all this. They make it no secret they don't give a fuck.

the problem with that is even if you have say 5 vms that you only use for testing once in a while , if any of the 5 vps will actually be working when you need if for that 10 hours in entire year , and they are not the cheapest provider on the block anymore ( even considering their cpu performance after ryzen upgrade is better ) only reason to use virmach is to fund @VirMach 's writing career

  • @codelock said: even considering their cpu performance after ryzen upgrade is better

Doubt it. Even a Pi 4B can handle the task nicely, but not on virmach's ryzen.

@VirMach, last login in July 2022, but still a Patron Provider and constantly scamming people with non-working services and crazy fees.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has one working quality server where he hosts free services gifted to admins and moderators, and then scams everybody else, because I can't think of any other reason why he still has a provider tag and isn't banned. :D
