I don't want to deal with installing vpn on 30 windows servers, I wouldn't buy a physical server if I was going to use vpn anyway.
Now you know how to properly specify your further requests - not only "German DC".
btw. Was would you do if you would get "German IP" yet the site you are trying to reach blocks datacenters and it will end up blocked? Would you blame provider too? Don't go custom deals and then be shocked it costed more.
At this point I believe it is worth to highlight that geolocation is something not possible to guarantee. Given your confidence in Hetzner's ability to properly geolocate all their IP addresses I will show you this is not a case.
I have a server with them in Finland, test IP is 2a01:4f9:3b:2a5f:86e2:89a:e1f7:b837. Yet still, there are popular geoip services detecting them as ones from Germany (wrong country!): see https://ipgeolocation.io/ and https://www.maxmind.com/en/geoip-web-services-demo - they will show Germany for this IP address, not Finland.
This makes 0 sense. Absolutely 0.
Obviously I am not an expert in these matters, but if I buy a physical server in Germany, I expect the ip address to be correct, and if I go and buy it in the Netherlands, I expect the same thing, this should not be user error.
I was just continuing with the over-hyperbolic theme of the thread. Something like that should have been discussed pre-sale, it obviously wasn't. Not Advin's fault.
Obviously
i like advin so my comment doesn't refer to advin but to advin in general (because the same thing has happened to me as safakb; but i wasn't talking about a multimillion dollar business or a server that costs $700 a month).
i had ordered a vps (it's not about advin) in germany, the ip was always a dutch one (for whatever reason). this circumstance also bothered me and i can understand safakb bit.
So, we need one more tick on checkout form to filter out such orders.
aha. good to know, so now you definitely always have to ask beforehand. interesting view of things.
We submitted corrections and geofeeds a while ago but some databases just haven’t caught up. Some will say Nuremberg and some will default to Amsterdam, unfortunately. Most do default to Nuremberg.
I pushed for an update from Maxmind, I’ll see what they say.
Why didn’t you check the looking glass etc before buying ?
I mean we can spin it even more in favor of Advin.
I see in tickets that Advin provided a test IP.
212.193.3.6Quick throw into https://www.iplocation.net/ip-lookup shows both Germany and Netherlands in results.
Did you even tested the provided test IP @safakb ?
Not every end user may be conscious, I was talking about ip addresses when I was emphasizing Germany, but apparently nobody understood that.
Look, I am not saying that the service of the company is bad here or that the server is bad, I am explaining the trouble and victimization I have experienced, how can this be caused by me?
But I also understand the comments of experienced users, I just want empathy.
It was a lesson for me that I will pay extra attention to such issues from now on.
or you can assume that if i order a server in germany that it also has a “german ip”. and if i order a beer in a pub in sweden i also expect a disgusting piss instead of a good german beer. do you understand what i mean?
Yes, thus I will add this tick to our form soon. I do not wish to take any responsibility for shady af service detecting our IP address space as not Polish.
It's an endless fight as I understand it. I needed an IP not blocked by a betting site and tried OVH's additional GEO IP's, some IP's literally said different countries for every checker there is.
what i described was not related to you, but to another provider. as i said, it didn't bother me that much... but for me it wasn't about a multimillion-dollar business either.
There is no "German IP", there's only "German IP according to 3rd party", obviously, no provider can guarantee what another party has to say about the IP.
If I go to Rolex and buy a watch, and a guy on the street yells that my real Rolex watch is fake, is that the fault of Rolex?
You never mentioned IP, you mentioned server location and this was provided. Some people do not care about IP location, they need
latencyakapingand Germany could be theirs main criteria for that... not where some 3rd party services geolocate IP address.See the difference?
do it!
but polish ips used to be german ips
You should ask Rolex for a refund
@Advin He understood and helped me anyway, thank you.
The main problem here may be that I am uninformed, but I could not guess that I would get an ip address from a different location while buying a server in Germany. So service providers may look at it from their side and see it as normal, but this is not the case on the user side. As a user, you expect what is written.
No politics pls, we do not want to derail this thread even further
Most IP databases just try to guess where IP addresses are located. Sometimes those guesses can be inaccurate. They don’t really know where it’s actually located.
its just about ips and geostrategic issues. dont blame history.
No one wants to separate from the money. That's why you always go with paypal for shady transactions. Than there is no shitty discussions. You ask - you get subpar answer - you fire dispute.
So I guess it's obvious that I'm not an expert on these matters. That's why you showed understanding. If I, as the end user, am purchasing a physical server located in Germany, I assume that the IP addresses will also be in Germany. This is my view from the user's perspective.
When I rent a server from Germany, I expect the IP provided to be geolocated to Germany.
The expectation of the IP to match the country in which the user ordered service in, I believe, is your average customer. To that extent, it should be noted (either in the T&C, SLA, or a checkbox below the agreement box) that there is a possibility that the IP you are automatically assigned may not resolve to the same country in which the services are being reflected as being located at. If the host is capable of adjusting this, a note on how to achieve this (chat, ticket, pre-purchase/post) should be available. In my mind, the best way to ensure a smooth transaction and make it easiest to integrate, would be to have an agreement checkbox with a simple disclaimer and instructions modal link next to it.
This all being said, I don't believe it was Advin's intent to deceive or misinterpret Safakb's request for service in a particular location. I also believe it's the responsibility of the customer to verify the IP, especially when it's being provided through the conversation.
From my perspective, the customer needs to accept they didn't do their due diligence, accept the refund generously offered by the host, and take this as a learning experience that could have been much higher in cost.
Just my 2 unsolicited cents.
