@cociu - Since Mike is already doing support for you, you should seriously discuss things with him and take his advice on how to clean this mess. I believe he's more experienced and is in a better position to advice you or to step in to mend the situation, in both management and technical aspects.
Don't try to play smart and take this on all by yourself. You've done enough damage as it is, your reputation and brand is tarnished beyond repair (at this point) so please put your ego aside, pay the right people to help you, as that will probably be the best thing for you to do now.
This is a simple but excellent question!
3000 affected users but only offer to rebuild 400 VPS, then what about the rest of 2600 affected users?
I think this is stupid idea considering he sold the HDD on OLX..
Those 2600 users are about to be involucrated with their money.
that's what $36,000 is for
Monday will be interesting. Until then, let's get rest and refresh our minds.
No more Mondays for you
Which does not make him a scammer, because that can have diverse reasons, by no means all of them bad or evil. Not informing the concerned customers in advance was creepy and improper though.
... or he had purchased quite a few in advance for big plans he had. Or ...
This one makes me laugh (not your saying it but the thing itself). Look, iirc all his major clusterf_cks were storage/disk related. Maybe (not an assertion, just a guess) maybe he finally got it and intends to totally keep away from anything involving disks > 1 or 2 TB and hence sold all them "cursed evil" disks, haha.
That doesn't necessarily mean a lot with @cociu and maybe it's not even true. In fact, always refunding is about the one thing I still halfway trust with him.
Hell, we are lucky that - after weeks - he gave us anything in terms of explanations and statements. I guess proper and coordinated communication just is something he'll never manage.
Yes, I agree.
But still he has heavy losses of reputation plus possibly his paypal account will be closed (and he wont get a new one).
Why wouldn't they, if he fully refunds? My personal guess is that after fully refunding all concerned customers he'll get back his tag but, at least for some "probation time" with some conditions.
After all @cociu is a major click (and page views) generator.
Nuh, (a) he already (still) has quite many followers, (b) he'd find other ways to make people know about his promos. And btw. he has more (not storage related) happy customers than quite a few other providers here. In fact, if he had learned his lesson the first time ("Stay away from storage!") this whole drama wouldn't have happened. There will be bumps on his way but no roadblocks.
... or so one would think. But frankly I wouldn't bet more than €5 on him learning.
as long as cociu don't Deadpool, he will be allowed back for sure.
his offers alone generate huge traffic, and 10 times more when his boxes blow up. so no need to rebrand at all. his bad reputation alone surpasses many good reputation providers.
That is exactly what upsets "certain providers" in my opinion. I've said it before, they hate the fact that the bar seems to be set lower for cociu than it is for them when it comes to expectations. That he seems to have a bad reputation but still remain popular must be enigmatic to say the least.
cociu is willing to take huge risk on his business by operating like this which is downright unprofessional and dubious. but it is not his doing that he's not banned from here (unless I'm wrong). so, providers who are upset can consider adopting the same model, accept the risk of angry customers, accept the risk of removing provider tag and maybe ban, play with PayPal chargebacks and trade on OLX, and can maybe earn "reputation" the same way as this Romanian brother has.
but customers have every right to be pissed at HS, have every right to chargeback the shit out of their PayPal , and yet also have the same right not to be.
There is no enigma. Many people here like illegal and shady stuff and cociu is their brother. How many providers with a good reputation allow what cociu allows? And at that price?
No enigma at all. He made his bed, now must sleep in it and providers which are jealous, don't, he has his market, you have yours.
If he will deadpool is due to the legal troubles he will be in. That is still out of his control (at this point after he allowed IP infringement for so long) and will still not be a scammer, people torrenting there know the risks, the fact the provider takes those risks and not them alone deserve the money they pay, the space and traffic come for free hence you cant really expect stellar service for free.
I could personally travel to every customer's house and shit on their door step, and not generate a 79 page thread. Congrats @cociu.
Is that included in every plan or does that cost extra?
@jar, now you really are talking crap!
I wonder when this drama will end?
When @cociu arrives at the point of (a) having refunded all concerned customers, and (b) communicating properly and professionally.
Don't hold your breath for (b)
In part I agree, due to his poor management of those 400 drives which got involucrated by his company.
In some other part I do not agree, because he could not have known (at the time when he made the offers) that a crypto-coin would cause so much chaos in HDD and SSD consumption. Nobody here can predict the future - except for @deank who knows the end of everyone and everything, but this is a completely different discussion.
I appreciate every provider which tries to make offers, even storage offers. Let's not blame providers for their offers because they do not know what the prices of hardware will be in future. Everybody assumes the prices will go down as technology evolves.
Cociu is to be blamed for his lack in communication skills, his lack in management of employees to compensate communication, his lack of prioritizing decision making; but definitely can not be blamed for the cheap storage offers which he tried to give us (and for which other providers hated him).
I've been summoned.
The end is ni-
Nevermind. It was a prank call.
That's just an assumption and in fact I doubt. Simple reason: nobody in his right mind would do China mining (as opposed to storage) on spindles and remote ones at that. Chia storage otoh poses no problem.
Second and probably more important: storage (beyond a couple of disks in Raid 0 or 1 or 10) is a rather complex field that requires quite some specific knowledge, especially when, as is often the case, low cost is a high ranking criterion. With some petabytes shaving off or wasting 25% is a major factor but also one that is fraught with risks unless one really knows the field.
From what (little) I see and know @cociu had a good techie in terms of networking and standard systems but he seems to have lacked and to still lack the know-how and experience needed for storage beyond the standard scenario (slap in a couple of (not too big) disks, configure the Raid and pretty much be done)

So from what I gather, the @Francisco and @dahartigan lawsuit is over horseguy's alleged child pornography hosting?
How do you even file a lawsuit against someone on some random forum? Will you put his LET profile link as "the sued party"? Or how does that work?
Or do you know eachother? Forum has some very vague privacy policy, but I wonder if that goes out of window for "friends".
Subpoena/court order to release data?
Every host has CP on them; TOR secret services, etc. Any host that claims without a shadow of a doubt they have none is a host you shouldn't trust as it means they're going through every clients data.
What he claims is that i willingly go out of my way to host it, protect it, promote it. That's where I take issue with it.
Francisco
Obviously if it goes to court, I was more wondering if it even needs to go there for "friends" of admins to get some basic info.
And to quote policy:
"What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes."
So... If someone requests their personal data to be deleted. What do you delete and what do you keep ?
Buyvm in India when? Maybe you can partner with https://internetfreedom.in/ and fight against new government policies
I do not agree here.
True, cociu can not foresee the future. But then again, so can none of all the other providers here and they are still doing fine.
What bothers me about cociu is his total lack of responsibility and the fact that a lot of people does not seem bothered by it. People here have been pointing out for years that his business is not sustainable and it will crash and burn, and now that it happened, those people get called jerks because they say I told you so by the same people that still defend cociu and tries to come up with excuses for everything he does.
Nobody in here could get away with even a fraction of what cociu has done the last few weeks without total decapitation by the community, but in cociu's case it's ok because he's cheap and talks funny? No way, it's double standards and it really bothers me.
