I was just thinking that you should have doubled the asking, they were still a bargain at $100 a piece considering the normal cost.

I still wanted to make a decent deal for LET. It should hopefully cover the monitors if I can pick them up at $20/ea for older 15". It annoys me to be buying back what I unwittingly donated a few months ago.

Thanks so much for the offer, @svmo. I'd be more than happy to put your donation to the cause.

Currently laptops will hopefully be received tomorrow, with the ongoing projects - well- ongoing.

Yesterday was spent herding cats, and I'm still not done with that. Some real life tends to sneak in every so often, as well. :)

VRC will be taking the 5 completed machines tomorrow.

First off: NO MORE VIRMACH. NONE.

Got this set of lappies all cleaned up, marked with specs, loaded with bundled software (Works 7 came with the Dxxx series, woo!) in some cases, and extra parts/dongles for a couple- but retaining drives/etc for the next set.

They are being delivered tomorrow- forgot to note that.

This set of laptops are specifically designated to those veterans who have returned, and due to various issues are finally entering assisted community college, starting Winter Session (December 26th). I've disabled the clitmouse on all but one unit, and a couple don't even have them.

Minimal specs are 2G (Max supported on i8xx)/30G(one EIDE beast in the mix)/Wireless (802.11g+), newer-to-brand-new batteries and chargers. Hard to get much lower-end than that for production, eh?

The desktops and any subsequent laptops will be presented for Spring 2018 (and beyond) due to time constraints on the VRC, and the fact that I'm still waiting on parts.

Thank you everyone for your assistance!

Not long after got off the phone with G (name and info will be provided to mods tomorrow after I get clearance), they told me that one of the biggest problem they have this time of year isn't only many being nearly-or-homeless since people have been kindly donating hats, gloves, and socks- but often their inability to be able to make appointments not only needing to rely on public transport- but many pawning or otherwise losing their cellphones. It's tough to be homeless on anyone- and with disabilities, it can't any easier.

I came up with a solution to one problem, and I'm not telling them until tomorrow. _You get to learn about it today. _

It's a carabiner radio/clock/alarm/flashlight which is worth nearly nothing (so it won't be stolen), but keeps time and has a rather loud alarm. It should last at least 6 months on the current (old stock) batteries. With included headphones, it will hopefully help them enjoy their choice of audio entertainment for awhile, too.

I bought 60 of them (all the vendor had left boxed) for ~$120.00 ($1.75/ea, discounted + 8.075% tax) after buying one and testing it myself for a week to see how well it'd work. The oil is not related to this project, but is also out for use tomorrow.

Even on old batteries, these seem pretty resilient- I left it outside overnight on the stairs, and in the yard when it dropped below freezing. It got a little damp, but still works just fine. Flashlight is a low power LED, and the 3 LR44 watch batteries are still under $1 for complete replacement.

It’s the somewhat unhealthy obsession with Emma Watson that might be the sticking point if they find the CM thread.

So now you say they don't appreciate true art ?

No, you may not have her number.

Believe it or not, I completely forgot. It was "Grinch" something. It's been a hell of a day- I just got home, 6 hours later. It was funny, though. Today they were closing at noon to have a small "Christmas Holiday" for the crew, and all were dressed up for the occasion. I've got a flier I'll be scanning later to list if anyone wants to assist.

Sadly, they can't take any direct monetary donations other than checks, so any future stuff will have to be by PP proxy, or to send them a check directly. I'll post their address/info later. THE MODS have been given contact information for confirmation of this part of the task completed.

Also, I got your package today, thanks!

Something told me to clean up and donate the C2D, and when I spoke with her this morning, she said that although there were 4 initially, there was a fifth who was going to start at the school this winter season. She was overjoyed that there was no "currently missing" from the short list.

They also need a printer- theirs broke. We're going to get them the hookup.

Thought I saw kick my ass in here. Was going to say I might enjoy that.

I'm sure she'd beat the living shit out of you. She's a tiny little thing, and dressing up as an elf didn't help. All we'd need is my fat ass to turn green and bald, and then with Donkey, we'd have a show!

I'm hoping to find more of the carabiners- they were impressed when I explained what they did. I still have a few days next week.

Today is Wreaths Across America. You've got a few hours to still join us!

Sweet Mercy my kind of lady send her my email and have her use it. We could have an interesting time and I might have yet another reason to come visit!

  • Wreaths across America was sadly a bit of a flop- only ~150 wreaths for 1500 vets. However, my small group of 4 were able to place nearly 200 flags. Damn it was cold.

I felt a bit guilty about spending some of the money on flags, when there is little to help those who are still with us.

I received an impromptu showing of the office when I dropped off carabiners, and noted that although they had a couple semi-recent desktops for use by visitors, there was no printer.

What good is internet and job research if you can't print? They had a Dell inkjet, but it broke, and they're a non-profit, so.. no printer. We fix problem!

Got about $75 into those two 4100n (no light in storage), a genericish Canon color inkjet scanner/printer, and a semi-recent Brother wifi-enabled scanner/copier/printer/fax, with 5 cartridge changes for the black, and 3 color for each of the inkjets.

Sadly, I don't have any spare 61X toners to give with the HP, but I'm sure those can be found relatively cheaply. I'll be updating trays with new rollers for the 4100s and replacing them before delivery.

Yes, they're still filthy. Being in storage will do that to ya. (The storage the HPs were in was once a building- back in the 40s. Not so much so now. Asbestos tile everywhere. Yummy!)

  • Hello, I am your friend from Iraq. I want to get VPS. I tried a lot to get it for the urgent need. I did not get it because I did not support my country and I did not sell a visa.

  • Nice regdate, bro. Check out ColoCrossing.

  • So I went to reinstall a couple of the desktops so I can get those to the VRC. Since that time, the first Acer is doing well with it's HD, and a CR-2032.

The Dell Core2 is very unhappy, now that I've had it on long enough to do some real diagnostics. I think someone flashed the wrong bios to it; it errors out on hardware that it doesn't have a physical port for, but it will start. For awhile.

Eventually the USB and SATA interfaces just die off, and it isn't worth spending this much time on for an older Core 2 so it's donating it's 1G of RAM to an old HP that is getting one of the 1TB drives that the same kind LETter mentioned above donated to the cause.

The HP is slowly reimaging this new drive, after the exchange of a CR-2032 backup battery, missing cables, and a replacement stock SATA DVD/CD+RW drive. Sure, it's not worth much, but it'll make someones' life a bit better.

So, we're down one of the lower-end donation desktop PCs, but I have another two Acers that will be added to this queue, and they're getting a couple laser printers to go with them.

  • There's 3 Acer dual core desktops w/ 2-4GB, 500GB-1TB, Gig-E, etc, an HP Dual Core D520+ class (better, but don't remember how much- it's still about a decade old), and a homebrew mini-tower in the mix. Other than one 500GB drive, the rest are all 1TB+.

The Core2 is dead- It's a 775 socket CPU, but I can't get it to play nice in the single 775 motherboard I have, so it's going out of commission. I repeat, the Core2 is retiring.

Thank you everyone for your help with this project.

I know @AuroraZ wants to see G again, but she's busy taking care of end-of-year paperwork for people who have requested donation receipts/etc. These won't get there until next year.
