tried 3 credit cards, all declined...??? guess no luck for me.

If the cards were from relatively new or obscure banks, their BIN codes could be misclassified/out of date. (I have no clue how Vultr is detecting between prepaid/credit/debit, though)

Given that it's a free "early access" program, you're probably OOL :-(

Go with paypal, vultr has some issues with credit card processing.

"PayPal may not be used with this promo."

Visa and Mastercard both Debit - "Linking denied for this card. Please deposit an amount of $5 or greater."

One can only imagine that there are many thousands of applicants

Congrats on your first post in 2023

I was thinking about applying, never had a vm with vultr, it just sounds like a knee-jerk joke, but after reading the level of hoops needed to pass through I give up, even as it has IPv6 and is under 1 GB plus 2 TB traffic which ticks all my boxes regarding a cool LEB.

My free tier request was just approved.

All I did was I signed up on release and used their $250 credit for a day.

Miami, Florida only one to accept the free? Or maybe its a case by case basis by user.

I just got my confirmation a few minutes ago. This will make a nice DNS server.

Got invited, looks like it's like AWS - one year free per the email.
But not able to find the free instance option :(

I think they are approving in bulk now.

Your Free Tier starts on 2023-03-09 and will end on 2024-03-09. During that year, you will be able to launch a Free Tier instance. You can only have 1 free instance running at a time. If you shut down the instance you can relaunch it up to twice per month.

go to deploy and make sure you select "cloud compute" and then "regular". It is only available in certain locations it seems

    Under https://my.vultr.com/settings/#settingsfreetier we see:

You were approved for early access to the Free Tier Program.

Your Free Tier starts on 2023-03-09 and will end on 2024-03-09.

During that year, you will be able to launch a Free Tier instance. You can only have 1 free instance running at a time. If you shut down the instance you can relaunch it up to twice per month.

The free instance can be deployed on the instance deploy page under:
Cloud Compute > Regular > Free Instance

Looks like it lasts only a year? Hope it's just part of their early access thing.

So far it seems like you can only allocate the free tier instance in Miami, Seattle, and Frankfurt.

    Thanked by 1greentea
  • It also only applies to certain OSes. For example I could provision one in Seattle with Debian, but its not available for Arch or Ubuntu

didn't check frankfurt, i needed an EU vps for my ASN. I'll stick to Seattle i guess.

  • Obligatory YABS in Seattle:

GB6 and GB4 both failed to run.
