@Francisco kill the matrix/discord bridge(s) for the IRC. Those users are terrible. Just do it.

Edit: oh, and the BuyVM circlejerk is well and alive. BuyVM is overpriced for what you're getting, anyway.

Which users are terrible, the IRC users? I don't think that's very true.

And overpriced? Please explain. Unqualified general statements without explanation aren't helpful!

Instead of Chicago, why not a more obscure location that you could somewhat normalize?

Not many providers in Luxembourg, which makes it a unique location that many use now because BuyVM is there.

I'd focus on seeking a location that is similar in that regards. Not super saturated, geographically unique and a place that is a bit more privacy friendly that would be better suited as a 5th location for anycast services.

    Just my $0.02

Honestly I was thinking about a Swiss location if we wanted 1 more EU.

    Push on the privacy side.

    Francisco

Geographically, still pretty close to Luxembourg. Roost to Zurich is just 200 miles. For comparison, Tampa to Miami is slightly a greater distance from one another.

Why not Finland, Sweden, Norway, etc? Or some Eastern European country that may have a suitable enough network infrastructure?

  • @Bastion said: Which users are terrible, the IRC users? I don't think that's very true.

It should be pretty clear: matrix and discord users.

I could get better deals from virmach, etc. See https://lowendbox.com/blog/1-vps-1-usd-vps-per-month/ for instance. Ryzen is meant for consumer use, and it's overhyped, anyway.

    Southpole servers.

    Anyone needs South Pole colocation?
It's free and you don't even pay for electricity.

  • @Francisco said:

South Africa has somewhat decent privacy & freedom of speech laws with somewhat of the infrastructure and would be totally unique with a niche.

    And batshit insanely overpriced.

    Francisco

Yeah but you could always charge extra for it rather than keeping the same across the board pricing.

Plus it'd be great for anycast.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I haven't had any distinctly awful experiences with people on Fran's Discord, I think I've had worse interactions on this forum. And yet I keep coming back, because I still like this place and find it useful.

Well based on that link I'll say this: I'm not really sure who some of those servers are marketed towards. <0.5GB RAM isn't really sufficient for most modern workloads outside of intermittent, low priority personal uses. And my experience with one of the two providers listed as offering a reasonable amount of memory is pretty subpar. You get what you pay for, and that generally means noisy neighbors and congestion. But if all you need is to log temperature and humidity data from a DIY sensor, I guess those small servers will do the job.

  • @deank said:
    Be more creative, Fran.

Under sea, in middle of nowhere. Sea servers only bound by international laws.

    Oh, do a Sealand!
Some guy bought (or claimed or simply squated or whatever he did) a fort outside of the UK somewhere, looks like a small oilplatform, and declared it an independent state. I know they tried to run some hosting on it to circumvent international laws, but the connectivity was pretty shit so it never really took off. The Pirate Bay tried to buy it for a while, don't know exactly what happened but the deal never went trough.

Switzerland and Chicago would be the dream team for me. Hope to see them in the future!

  • Only it seems strange to me that a Canadian has no servers in Canada?)

Roost, Luxembourg is less than 200 miles from Zurich though, and I'd assume that'd be the location in Switzerland. That'd be like having services in Houston, Texas and Dallas, Texas (225~ miles). Geographically it doesn't offer much variety and for anycast purposes it may not offer much benefit in coverage than Lux already does for that region.

I mean, I'd buy a BuyVM Swiss Slice for sure and would be happy with it. But i'm hoping @Francisco may surprise us all in the future with something unique and that will help those who use him for anycast to better service an area that could really benefit from it.

For regular users, it just seems like Lux and Swis service locations would compete with each other since they're near one another.

Chicago would be cool for the US. That'd be a pretty well rounded US anycast network. East Coast, west coast and central. Not bad.

I don't think BuyVM is overpriced for what they offer, which is privacy and freedom. Does Virmach offer that? Does it allow you to torrent? I'm not saying everything has been amazing, I've had a few problems, but their support is very quick and at least they try. As my personal torrent client and vpn, it's excellent. Virmach and BuyVM don't really compete in the same space in my opinion.

Privacy is controversial. But yep, the law of the land is amazing;)

I don't really care about that stuff; I use BuyVM because the stuff is fast, bullet proof and from experience I know that if there's a problem Fran will probably have fixed it before I even notice.

The fact it's also stupidly cheap is almost beside the point; it would be good value at twice the price (but don't tell him that).

Update: they banned me twice from the IRC, so I used a /24 with microsocks, but sadly, they blocked the range, so I got another proxy loaded up. Very angry.

    * onekopaka sets modes [#frantech +b *!*x0c@*.73ADD275.155AA3AA.IP]
    * You have been kicked from #frantech by onekopaka (onekopaka)

Okay, I'm cancelling my services with BuyVM and going to virmach. I <3 virmach now.

You'd be better off just finding another community that you like taking part in.

Torturing yourself on ours does nothing for your mental health.

Go hang out in the LET Discord/IRC.

    Francisco

  • Ok someone is the turd that never seems to go down when you flush the toilet.

No, but you haven't either, yet you're spending your time on a closed-source communication platform that is full of children. Doesn't that raise the question of whether BuyVM's chat channels are fostering pedophilia?

Edit: and yes, the buyvm circlejerk is going to attack me for that question...

  • @tinyweasel Usually the one to mention it is the one doing it.

I mean he was ban evading to get back into said communities. What does that say about him?

    Francisco

  • @Francisco He is just a turd. He likes to shit on people but he will get what is coming to the turd blossom.

I won't name call, but the whole situation is a bid odd.

He came to the community, started trash talking and being a jerk right away. Non stop trying to turn our general chat into a 'talk about every other provider' instead of it being specific to us...since it's our community.

He legitimately should be talking on the LET discord where that stuff is welcome. I don't think there's any provider here that runs communities for their specific company that would be OK with that though.

We do our best to allow some pretty open discussion, even about other providers, but when it's bordering/turning into a shill push, we start to hand out warnings.

  • @Francisco I totally get it and he is doing the same crap here. Funny he is acting like a weasel (dick). He is not even man enough to respond to anything I have directed at him. So his days are numbered quite soon.

Honestly if he just cools his jets some and apologizes to Onekopaka then he'll probably lift the ban.

Then again he went out of his way to ban evade so that might've killed that idea.

You sound like you're on the verge of irrationally banning someone else who disagrees with you..

@jbiloh this guy needs a break from moderating IMO.

If I suddenly get the red avatar, wonder why...
