You expect the provider to simply know who you are out of their many customers?

    Yes

Start building @HostDZire . We will all lose something, more or less... but learn your way up. Even if TOS says its not your reponsibility, one fortnightly / monthly backup to an offsite location would have really saved a lot of reputation.

Anyways... focus on bringing the servers up and letting us all restore our services.

@host_c said: Regarding ZFS and snapshots, I will say pass, snapshots are not backup, they never were nor one should use them for that, it might look good on paper, but it is really not.

I respect that.. Specially if you think backups are file level (ie. restic for example). But also respectfully you obviously do not know how ZFS snapshots work and what my suggestion is. You can say "no RAID, no Backup, no this or that" in AUP and have users deal with it..

But you can not say "someone hacked me, I do not care, restore backups". And snapshots would give him ability to at least go back 2,3,4.. days and restore user's data. Users can not be responsible if someone hacked host.

I run probably more enterprise than HostDzire ever will (in a sense of loosing data) and I run ZFS snapshots as backups. My clients prefer returning 2h back and loosing 2h of data vs. taking 6+ hours to restore 500+ GB of data and database (in case of above mentioned restic). With ZFS I do that in under 5 minutes.

All I am saying is: why buy Ferrari if you only have money for Polo ? Why run VMware if you are saying "well, yes.. I do not have money for anything else, deal with it". And I am not saying similar thing can not happen to Proxmox or something else in a future.. it probably will.

Is there any other cheap provider out there for leaseweb vps's other than HostDzire officially? I only know of HostDzire and HBD.
HBD also sell one around €5/m for the cheapest NL vps and its from the AMS-01 data racks.
Or should I wait for BF at this point?
I just care about the vps being vfm and backups/raid dont matter. I will only use it for a hobby project so need the LW network and colo and it sucks that they are B2B now.

    @HostDZire

Also, do not forget to inform LEA. Hopefully there's a chance to get those assholes/biowaste!

As for backup (yours) I suggest a compromise: only do backups of your infrastructure frequently. Backups of client's drives could be an option for a coast-covering additional fee.

Many providers state no backups included but if you contact them they will arrange a backup plan at a cost.

Many want very cheap VPS which hosting a set a mount to ensure performance too is a balance without adding costs to backup everyone every few days / week.

At the end of the day, buying the lowest price server can seem great until something happens then its an issue, while if the customers who bought an offsite backup run into this issue, they can raise a ticket, be restored to another node and back up within a few hours (depending on company workload)

I thought the same. If @host_c would do continue with plans today, few would even notice, because of @HostDZire is taking all the attention.

@fredo1664 said: Out of curiosity I checked how expensive vmware can be and it looks very expensive indeed. Is it even profitable for a LET-friendly budget host to use vmware to sell VPS unless it's the free edition?

Free edition is unusable in hosting, you don't have Live vMotion and a bunch of the stuff that makes vMware number 1.

Either go for Proxmox or Hyper-V in that case.

vMware is not for budget hosting, or for anything that begins with "budget". And they don't hide that, their market is Large ENTP or above.

Their vps which are gone? They are selling the hope that a fresh vps will eventually be created as a replacement?

Or they are selling their vps which still work?

Sir there is a sick pigeon with a bad flu stuck in the air conditioning unit and is making everyone sick. We need to send in an extraction team but they need to enter the vent in your accounts vault. If you can providing us the account and password we can get the bird out.

    Update – Infrastructure Rebuild Progress
    Dear Everyone,

We would like to provide you with an update on the recovery efforts following the recent VMware infrastructure incident.

Today, our team completed a significant amount of work toward rebuilding the affected environment. In addition to reinstalling the operating systems on all affected virtualization nodes, we have also finalized the design of a new infrastructure and security architecture aimed at significantly reducing the risk of similar incidents in the future.

Implementing these improvements requires several physical changes within the datacenter, which has made the recovery process more time-consuming than a standard rebuild. Our priority is not only to restore services as quickly as possible, but also to ensure the rebuilt infrastructure is considerably more secure and resilient.

Tomorrow, we will continue with the remaining datacenter work and infrastructure configuration. If everything proceeds as planned, we expect to begin provisioning new VPS instances from tomorrow. Replacement VPS services will be assigned to affected customers one by one as each virtualization node becomes ready.

We understand how disruptive this incident has been, and we truly appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to restore services safely and securely.

Further updates will be posted as recovery progresses.

    Kind Regards,
    HostDZire Team
