As emgh said, that's basically saying you're not allowed to use the entire 8TB. If you go over, you go over. Pay the overages or get throttled that should have been the consequence. Not a stern warning to be told to get it in order.
I would have maybe been a little on SolidVPS's side if you continued to some how pull double your BW consumed whilst throttled but still...
I accepted it because they were being flexible with me when they didn't need to be. I just think it points to bandwidth being a limiting factor for their growth and a reason why they had to raise prices, not greed as some others have claimed.
All and any service's price can be increased. That's why people buy long term or have contracts to mitigate against unexpected or high increases.
Fucking snowflakes.
True, but if I buy something with a set yearly price + 5% increase each year... I find it hard to stomach a 100% price increase 6 month in.
They backtracked from that increase but still.
For once I agree. Unless these were explicitly advertised as recurring deals, the fact that they happened to stay unchanged for a few years means nothing. With that said, I do think SolidVPS could have handled the PR situation better.
One could also be of the opinion that if you paid for x TB you should absolutely be entitled to x TB.
If I buy a TV I'm not okay with walking out with a remote.
I think what forest is saying is that he was willing to be flexible on the bandwidth because Solid was willing to be flexible on the AUP. Maybe that wasn't negotiated up front, but sometimes it's ok to give up a little bit if you value the business relationship.
Its like buying a BJ vs Sex.
Not even sure what to say at this point
If you can’t offer x for y then there’s a really good solution to that
It involves around not selling x for y
The service has been fantastic for me. Even as a troll I have nothing but amazingly positive experiences with @SolidVPS.
You're not wrong. I'm just saying that I understand why forest decided not to fight it out.
Yeah, I can see it from that POV
Yeah, I'm not saying that it was right, just that I won't fight against it because they could also have simply kicked me out and that would totally be in their right.
tl;dr when I signed up, the AUP only said Tor exits were disallowed. Later they changed it and said they had always intended it to prohibit all relays. I was told just to "be careful" and that it would get suspended if I received an abuse notice. They could easily have just terminated me but they didn't, so I'm not going to go all mjj over them being uneasy with me using 100% of my monthly bandwidth on a dirt-cheap Christmas deal in an expensive country. So instead of getting 8 TB/month and 10 Mbps unmetered after the 8 TB expires, I get ~7 TB/month and no extra bandwidth after it's used up.
In essence: not sperging out gives leniency. Being a difficult customer will result in strict policy. Entitlement ruined relationships
Exactly. Now, if I had paid a lot with a long-term contract and had to run a production environment, I might get pissy about them changing the AUP after I had read it and signed up, and I might be more strict about getting everything, but this is a VPS that's so cheap that they'll surely lose more money if I open a new ticket than I paid for the entire VPS, so for such generous bandwidth at such a low price, I won't act entitled. I even suspect there's a light network throttle on the VPS now, which again is totally fine by me. I try to be a fair customer and not someone who nitpicks, so long as the service is working.
You’ve said multiple times that you’re not saying what they’re doing is right.
My point isn’t that you’re not playing it as one should, if you want to keep it with current limits, by all means do. And by all means don’t put pressure on them.
But I think think there’s a reputational risk of doing all these things in the first place.
”I sold something I can’t afford to sell” isn’t a very serious argument. First saying BF24 was over 2 years ago to then respond that it may even be 4 years ago BF24 is another example of what made me question this thing, it didn’t seem genuine.
My first instinct was that I completely understand that prices increase. I still do. And I also think provider had all rights to increase pricing. As long as there’s no contract then all renewals is essentially to be seen as a new contract. I find adding them to some list because they increased prices to be an insane practise.
What I have a hard time with is that the reasoning and the arguments didn’t feel genuine.
That said, SolidVPS has been very good to me in the past, for a long time now. I even got a free resource upgrade from them.
I’ve always seen them as more reputable and stable (i.e. less childish) than 99% of hosts here and so that’s why I reacted the way I did to how they choose to handle this.
Note that my first post mentions that I only bring this up because I believe it points to bandwidth costs being the primary issue, not greed as others have speculated. Whether or not what they did was fair, right, wrong, or whatever shouldn't really have any bearing on it. I just wanted to counter the argument that the price increase was pure greed.
I was surprised about that too. I expected that they would have understood that LET drama just has to be weathered.
You must have a really good remote.
Although the price increase is your right, why is it marked as a revolving discount when you make the purchase
