For me it was a place where only kids gather. All emojy, gifs, flashes, “nitro” and other dopamine generators. Nothing which could grab gen z attention. I like calm and structured applications: jabber, irc.
Yes, the clutter is both in the application itself, and the "content" it often seems to inspire.
XMPP/Jabber & Session are best anonymose privacy dm messenger service
Clearly honeypot technology like all 'free' big tec. Your data is their income.
Your channel looks lovely!

No push-ups for some reason though.
The report, which focused on Brett Goldstein, a former director of the Defense Digital Service, found that Goldstein violated department policies by using Signal "to discuss official DoD information" and encouraging subordinates to communicate with him on the encrypted messaging app.
"Signal is not approved by the DoD as an authorized electronic messaging and voice-calling application," the report asserted

A Pentagon-wide advisory warned against using the messaging app, even for unclassified information:

Yeah, have seen that feature, but it's a bit unclear to me.
Your TG account is tied to the phone number. Unsure what's necessary to own that virtual number forever.
Otherwise you'll either have to link another number to your acc-t, or a new owner will be able to "reset" your account in a week or two and create a new one instead.
Yeah, it's bad.
You're supposed to add two-step verification password. Then, they can't use your account
it's an absolute trash pile,
but it's easier to use than everything else,
with more of the bits to cover most use cases,
don't forget it's free FREE free,
and everybody is already using it.
the best part is if something does come along to kill discord we'll be having the same conversation because companies don't put this effort in without long-term plans to monetize the data.
This ain't our account.

Washington Post says to contact their reporters via Signal.
We have the book Signals and Systems and we've been tapping Morse code on the "Signal" for weeks but never heard back from reporter.
I have requested the deletion of my Discord account.
Fun fact: they won't delete my account; instead they'll wait for me to login for 14 days, in case I change my mind.
That may be so but many, probably most, will not care about or even know those details. In fact I've already seen multiple indications for "nuh, thanks no. I'll look for some alternative" and even first lists comparing alternatives.
Besides, I'm certainly not the only one thinking, that now they limit it (as described by you), but sooner or later they'd do it generally, no exceptions.
TL;DR fuck discord! and my guess is they'll likely go belly up or at least become insignificant.
well i agree with the fuck discord part but while we're moaning about them being evil everybody else in the world is just clicking ok and carrying on as they're already used to the new normal.
i mean if we're campaigning to kill them i'm there with you rah rah but reality doesn't give a shit what we think.
discord isn't going anywhere.
If i remember correctly, even after 14 days, whole data deletion takes 30 days (by deletion, it means anonymization). Everything you ever posted on Discord stays there.
You can only manually remove messages. Super gay.
what is mate ricks? @emgh
cant say
sivir
They can keep whatever I posted; I don't care. I simply want out, while I still can.
EDIT: here is some info - basically all messages don't get deleted (from a deleted account), instead they appear under a "deleted_user" username.
[Deleted - Oops, wrong thread, sorry]

if you care about your privacy and data, i suggest taking a look at https://discuss.privacyguides.net/, its been very helpful for me
Thank you very much. I reactivated my account and requested all my messages. Let's see how this goes after I request removal.
When I requested my discord messages a few days ago, it said it might take 30 days 😭
IMO a typical corp. PR move after seeing that their original plan meets way more resistance than expected.
And highly likely it just means that they'll do what they planned anyway, just in a somewhat different way.
Btw, this also works as a test for them. If one stays due to their PR one basically "signs" that one is basically careless, easily manipulated plus likely stupid and possibly already dependent.
The relevant question is: do you TRUST them?
After what they've attempted the answer clearly is NO
I skipped the pages, but this exists fyi

^ Already patched unfortunately.
I just read it a month ago. One of those "I should get around to reading it" things.
It sucked.
Some sf stories really should just be essays where the author says “I have this speculative idea” instead of trying to manhandle the idea into tortured prose. 1984 is such a story…but even worse, it’s prose AND essay (the middle third of the book is a character reading a nonfiction book as a way of clumsily inserting a long section of telling instead of showing).
Plus long philosophical screeds and debates stuffed in character’s mouths. This could have been edited down (maybe) to a serviceable short story, though I hated all the characters, so I wouldn't have wanted to read that, either.
It's often referenced, so you might read it for general knowledge, but it is often referenced wrong (so the less you know, the less you suffer LOL).
1984 shows forced coerction with strict brainwashing, while the world we live in is a lot closer depicted in "Brave New World" (Huxley). That is also a high-quality dystopian novel, and 1984 is torture porn in comparison.
There is Rocket.Chat
Easy, just use the death stranding way to verify. Done.
Thanks for bringing this up. I'll look into that one, too
One does not read 1984 for entertainment.
1984 is not that great book, but the quotes of "the party" resonate when politicians start taking control through tyrannic actions.
I don't want to politicise this thread, but unfortunately the main ideas of the book are starting to become more and more valid nowadays; this is why that book gains so much popularity nowadays.
Back on topic: Discord needs people IDs, because of... children. Yeah right. Though some adults will show "strength" and present their IDs; it is why Discord even had 70.000 IDs to leak in October 2025.
In other news, "Discord advises UK users that they "may be part of an experiment" where instead of their age verification data never leaving their phone, it will now actually leave their phone"
