  • Matrix looks as the obvious solution here, but it is quite abused in distributing really bad content.

It is tainted. Zulip is the correct answer and irc v3.

Can IRC v3 be used for voice chat? From what I know IRC is awesome for text, but not voice.

From what I know Zulip is better replacement for Slack within organisations. I never thought of it as a good replacement for Discord though (maybe because it is centralised like Discord is).

Meanwhile it seems Matrix starts to become more of a choice as people from Discord look for alternatives online.

Matrix has been seeded with FOSS and other type of community when freenode implodes.
See the difference between freenode and libera on this image

If large percentage of discord user also have matrix, then it's the path of least resistance. It's the logical choice.

I still remember the days of self-hosted Teamspeak servers. Some providers (like Zap-Hosting) still offer Teamspeak servers preconfigured.

I'm not a fan of discord but nothing you nerds have mentioned even comes close to being equivalent, get fuckin real.

    @zed said: get fuckin real.

K boss, be sending nudes for verification.

Users searching for alternative to communication without KYC. Of course discord is GOAT, because it is earning massive amount of penises and dollars. FOSS alternatives will never beat that.

Then please provide a solution. Obviously Discord goes south. We need solutions. If it is self-hosted or decentralised, that's even better.

  • The truth is theres really no 1:1 replacement for it. Some foss alternative exist but they're mostly unpolished, lack features, and most of all got network effect problem. No one wanted to use alternative because their friends and families aren't there yet, catch-22, chicken and egg. Depends on how gimped the teen restricted accounts is people would either stay with the restricted access account or cave in sending their mugshot. The network effect is that strong, discord learned from whatsapp, imessage etc.

  • Always hated Discord, now I hate them even more.

    Scw also has that.

On the other hand, this is just another chapter of government/corporate being afraid of telling people to taught their kids how to present themselves on the internet
It should have been the common sense to tell kids not to talk to complete stranger, yet this isn't applied to the internet!?!? We use training wheels when the kids want to learn to ride bicycle. The parents are supposed to be the training wheels as they introduced their kids to the internet.

?? What's the problem you're trying to solve? I'm not aware of anything existing that replaces all of Discord's functionality and ease-of-use but if there's specific facets you're after we can probably find something "good enough".

For example I happen to be a fan of plain old irc for multiplayer notepad but I sure as shit wouldn't try to walk anybody new thru the hows. And they probably already have Discord installed anyway.

Discord is facing backlash after announcing that all users will soon be required to verify ages to access adult content by sharing video selfies or uploading government IDs.

    It's normal and good.

Get rid of Discord! Dangerous place!

Switch to Telegram. The best messenger these days (and probably ever).
Not ultra-private, most anonymous (requires a phone number), etc., but by far the most convenient and feature-packed.

We have Telegram app but it's barebone, only single channel showing announcements from WHMCS hackers.

So far I like Signal, but none of my relatives use it. It is only me and my wife. All my relatives use Whatsapp.

A great comment from that Youtube video that pretty much sums up this entire argument.

Streets are used by criminals, email is used by criminals money is used by criminals.
If you want a censor proof system you have to accept that it is not only used by 'the good guys'.

WhatsApp is bad for long-term use. Few years later and it's easy to occupy 20-30GB if you're doing full data retention. Remember india's good morning messages?
    https://www.financialexpress.com/policy/economy/are-whatsapp-good-morning-messages-eating-up-your-smartphone-space-this-google-app-will-help-you-clear-it/1029142/
And the lack of mute feature meant these spammers went unchecked

  • My impression of discord, from when I tried it years ago, was that it was a cluttered mess and very unpleasant to try to use.
