  • Just purchased a year of object storage, thanks for the awesome deal. Can you share what the underlying system is? Garage/minio/etc.

    Buuuuuuuuuuut

    I MUST be honest

I’m very against pre-defined storage limits for S3. It’s the perfect product for usage based billing. No product is better suited for usage based billing than S3

    <3

i can enable usage based billing for you at normal rate :D

reserved capacity always get better rate :P

I would love usage based billing that deducts from balance with no minimum storage (like AWS S3) at normal rates.

it will be GA in the next few weeks

Amazing S3 upload speed, managed just over 200MiB/s moving large backups!

@onidel Are there plans to add S3 management to your API?

IaC provisioning/management of object storage services for separate environments. Don't have a need for it at the moment, just curious since I didn't see anything S3 related in the API docs.

US and/or EU would be nice. The two current locations (SG/AU) are far away from most of my servers.

It's already 4 Feb in Australia (Onidel HQ).

  • Luv Onidel 4 Lyfe.

Moving my backups from Singapore to Sydney. Based on the test download links, the more local service should be pretty sweet.

AU - SG route has been so bad lately 😩

It'll sort itself out once IndigoWest is back up (~April ETA for fix :disappointed: )

FFS - I knew about the second fault, but not about the third one. I’m gonna have to find an ISP that has Telstra then as they’re the only ones that have a decent route to Australia at the moment.

FWIW I just (finally) purchased an @onidel VPS and plan to use it as a reference server if it's as good as my former benchmarks indicated - and it indeed seems to really be that good. I just saw close to adapter speed to another SGP target (989 Mb/s).

    YAY! :)

    Et voilà, here's the benchmark:

Here's the benchmark results of my new @onidel reference VPS, based on a bit over 25 runs.
In case it helps them to sell even more I don't mind at all.

Short version of sysinfo: the usual but with a Xeon Gold 6242 processor, all interesting flags available. Processor (single core) & memory results:

    ProcMem SC [MB/s]: avg 256.9 - min 102.9 (40.0 %), max 416.9 (162.2 %)
    ProcMem MA [MB/s]: avg 400.4 - min 381.2 (95.2 %), max 414.5 (103.5 %)
    ProcMem MB [MB/s]: avg 401.0 - min 388.0 (96.8 %), max 412.6 (102.9 %)
    ProcMem AES [MB/s]: avg 1245.5 - min 1221.0 (98.0 %), max 1262.6 (101.4 %)
    ProcMem RSA [kp/s]: avg 108.6 - min 102.9 (94.7 %), max 112.2 (103.3 %)

Nice results. Not that I care much (with a SGP VPS), but really nice. Also note the Epyc territory crypto results!

On to the disk which I care a bit more about ...

Yay, nothing at all to complain about here as well. 50 MB/s and very solidly above 10k IOps is good enough even for DB use.

Finally on to the test I really care about with a Singapore VPS, connectivity.

Europe - not great from a european perspective but actually quite decent from SGP. All major targets about 70 Mb/s isn't bad at all.

Asia / Oceania - here I expect good results - and onidel delivers. For a start even 2 out of 3 Iran targets were reached; yes 20 Mb/s looks crappy but currently getting anything from a server in IR at all is worth to write home about.
Now to the fully working targets. India way above 150 Mb/s is decent, and so is Hongkong with well above 300 Mb/s. SGP even (almost) fully uses/fills the 1 Gb/s pipe and multiple CN targets above 100 Mb/s and one even comparable to IN results is really great. MY well over 600 Mb/s is decent as well and so is JP with well over 150 Mb/s. Down to Ozzyland with a bit under 70 Mb/s is disappointing though, but at least the secondary targets achieved similar results.
All in all I think this onidel VPS was a good choice for a reference VPS. I'm happy (but hope that connectivity to Straya gets restored fully soon ...).

Africa - not great but good enough to occasionally download a not too big file.

Americas - OK, I guess, after all the whole Pacific and then some need to be crossed over. The west coast results are a bit better but still not great.

Btw. almost all secondary targets were reached as well.

Summary/verdict: Sadly the 50% off promo is over, but for that price this VPS truly is a great deal! Probably even for the normal price, at least for people who need good quality and performance more than a super-low price.

Albeit with that caveat, I recommend Onidel's Asia/Oceania VPSs.

I recorded a maximum speed of 307 MiB/s during a speed test on the local node in Singapore.

tested from a node in Vietnam just now and got 178MiB/s. there is no network speed limit on the s3 gateway endpoint (at least for now).

    • ~3.5gbps from Singapore (a different provider)
    • ~1gbps from Hong Kong
    • ~500mbps from Japan
    • ~200mbps from Albania, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands
    • ~150mbps from Poland and central US
    • ~100mbps from Nigeria
    • ~180mbps from Onidel Australia
    • ~80mbps from Chile

AU - SG route has been so bad lately 😩

It'll sort itself out once IndigoWest is back up (~April ETA for fix :disappointed: )

More likely mid-Feb. Fault #3 is being fixed now which is earlier than scheduled (April) due to a boat becoming available.

Fault #2 off the coast of Perth will be the last one remaining.

Pleased to let everyone know that Indigo West is now live again.
