Allright.... Who played duck hunt way back?

I also remember the trackstars game or something like that with the pad thing. I also remember jumping off of it and having to time jumping back on for the long jump before it reached the end

Oh yes, I remember that root! Oh the good old days! Man, the www wasn't even a common thing!

yeah, though I do remember having a local dailup ISP during the SNES days since that's how I got cheat codes. Even used the local library when I wanted to print out a bunch of things since it wasn't much money.

@dude ! Don't get me started there! Like I would ask my sis in collage to print me out stuff in colour at collage cos you know, that was the bomb.!

p[rint out stuff in color in college.. you guys seem to be remembering advanced tech.. my first printer had ROLL of paper and was doing printing with 9 needles and ink-dipped tape...

Hehe, either I'm between you both in age or we're all just remembering the same era from different perspectives.

My dad first got a dot matrix printer at home in the mid 80s - he was a writer and and all his work was printed on that (because he submitted it electronically to a real computer by taking his computer to the office and connecting it via RS-232), and that's the printer I later inherited and used for about a decade. Sometime during school years, we got a laser printer but the teacher was really protective about who could use it.

By the time I was in university in the mid 90s, it was a real mix of tech. We had a lot of old line printers in the computing labs, but also a central printing facility where laser printing was something like £0.02 per sheet and you started each year with 500 pages of credit. They had colour laser printing but it was really expensive, something like £0.25 per sheet, and all the print jobs would be manually held until you showed up the the counter and confirmed that you definitely wanted it and would pay.

Remember being quite impressed only a relatively short time later in mid 2000s when colour inkjets had appeared from nowhere and suddenly became dirt cheap within a few years of their introduction. I remember buying several as it was cheaper to buy a whole new printer with half a cartridge of ink supplied than getting a refill for the cartridge!

i fucking love damned customer support at some of the providers here.. just love it.. i will show this one - chunkserve... OMG.. i understand i have 2 cheap plans there, but man... it's simply ridiculous. isn't it? look at dates and tell me if i am wrong.. i will shorten posts where needed and reverse order for chronology:

    ME Wednesday, December 17th, 2025 (01:25)

earlier server [IP] became inaccessible. after reboot it was showing 160% disk usage, i have no idea why. so i decided to reinstall system. after doing so, i cannot start the VPS, VNC says auth failed. don't know what to do anymore. please, check, thanks

    OWNER Wednesday, December 17th, 2025 (14:18)

    any help?

Dear OWNER, I'll recreate the server. What OS should be preinstalled?
    .

    OWNER Thursday, December 18th, 2025 (19:24)

    ubuntu24 thanks

    OWNER Thursday, December 18th, 2025 (19:28)

can i also request IP change? both servers have same subnet IP, if you can give a different subnet, i would appreciate.
    .

    Operator Friday, December 19th, 2025 (11:59)

Of course, please give me hostname/current IP of server that you want to change IP of :)

    OWNER Friday, December 19th, 2025 (14:17)

[IP] - the IP i'd like to change
are you simply delaying helping me with all these questions? it feels so.. because IP was listed on the bottom and Ubuntu 24 was listed as my OS on the server panel.

man, it's been 3.5 days my VPS is offline. are you going to help me out or not??>
    .

    Operator Saturday, December 20th, 2025 (15:59)

Dear OWNER, You have 2 servers in the same subnet range, so I wanted to ask, which IP You preffer to swap :) I'm replacing [IP] with [IP1]
    .

    OWNER Saturday, December 20th, 2025 (19:28)

dear OPERATOR, i appreciate your assistance with IP change. may i be so blunt as to direct your noble attention back to the actual problem with which i dared to approach you earlier? [etc]

basically he still didn't help with server.. changed IP but did not reset/reinstall the server.
still waiting for server to be fixed..

I know from your perspective it seems like the ticket isn't being answered, but you could have cut out a lot of that by just saying "I tried to re-install ubuntu24 from the control panel and it failed with an auth error on vnc. Can you help? There is nothing on the VPS currently, and it's fine for you to erase the disk or reinstall it if you need to."

Personally, I wouldn't have requested an IP change while the other thing was going on, as that just confuses what your actual request is. Also, most providers don't change IP for free.

basically he still didn't help with server.. changed IP but did not reset/reinstall the server.
still waiting for server to be fixed..

hehe, my experience with racknerd, has basically been I can't even go to the bathroom after opening a ticket before they reply. For mounting an ISO, I can't even take the doggo outside before they have it downloaded and mounted for me!

i mean.. it seems this guy is just fucking with me.. why would i want to replace IP of the other working server? it is obvious this server's IP is the one i'm asking to replace.. and OS.. just damnit recreate the VPS and I will install OS myself, who cares what OS? am i wrong? anyway... just annoying AF..

Again, to play devil's advocate. It obvious to you because one of the servers isn't working. It's not necessarily obvious to a provider who has tens of thousands of clients, and looking at yours he sees multiple systems, all seeming to be working as far as the information in his control panel is saying.

Even if you have said exactly which server you want wiped already, most providers would (or hopefully would) ask you to confirm it exactly again, because if they wipe the wrong one, you're going to be far more upset than just wasting a bit of time making sure it's correct.

    well gnight y'all..

less than 2 days till i get 4th place prize and gift it to my sister.. gotta outshine her in the gifting game.. =) plus i'm not into apple stuff. although i red you can hook up airpods to android no problems, but won't get full functionality.. i have samsung buds, only used them during time i was jogging outside, very comfy hooked up to the watch, listen to techno dj mixes to keep up the pace.. but since my ankle started hurting on one leg and knee on the other, i just do workouts in the room while watching random shit on prime.. currently BTW they have 1st season of Mayor of Kingstown for free and ad free. which i am watching now. Jeremy Renner is amazing in it. He like Jason Bateman in Ozark.. was so good..

    G'night!

Yeah, if I did end up in 3rd/4th place, I would totally ask if I could be treated like an international customer and just get credit. Though there's no way I can catch up for that  Good idea on using it for a gift to someone else!

Oh, I believe regardless of whether you are international or non-intl, winners can always opt for RackNerd credits instead. So, you should be good there.

Yeah, I figured they would do it. In a way, I don't really have a need for 2nd place but I would still get it over the credit just to play with it. Same with 1st place though parts of it would be an upgrade from my current gaming desktop.

    What's your current pc spec?

my gaming desktop high level hardware specs is an i9-9900k, 2080 Super, 32G ram, and a mix of SSDs (nvme and sata). It's still good but could be better

Hehe yeah, in my eyes the 1st prize isn't the awesome gaming rig it's made out to be.

My main work PC from 4 years ago is Ryzen 5800X, 64GB, 3080 with 12GB, 8TB of local NVMe. Despite the GPU being a generation behind, it's still significantly faster than the 4060 and has more VRAM. The CPU is a bit slower but if I did the cheap upgrade to 5900X, it'd be about the same, and 5950X is significantly faster still.

I have another work PC with a 4060 and GPU performance is noticeably slower, typically taking about 50% longer on the kind of work I do.

Lol, I know that! We used to have one of those at home. It made a lot of noise. Very memorable sound!

There's definitely a thing - debugging by dot matrix. Just printing out your code and listening to the noise, you have 10 minutes to thing about what you did wrong and can usually find the mistake immediately without even needing to look at the printout.
