Yeah, I was told that actually it's even relatively common for mothers to gift their daughters cosmetic surgery work for their 18th birthday. Kind of nuts.

But it seems that there's a very sexist culture in the workplace though. It seems that many roles are more gendered than elsewhere and attractiveness is the highest ranking criteria for most of the office jobs, more than actually having any qualifications at all. So if you want to get ahead in work, you get some surgery done.

Of course, only 1 girl told me that, could be completely anecdotal and/or BS.

Didnt know about the 18th birthday gift thing. That's just odd. I believe k-pop and sm over there have just helped propagation this idea to a much higher level and right now, it's impossible to track back on, cause it's engrained.

There hasn't been a single veto'd law for over 200 years, and the general consensus is that if the monarch ever did veto a law it'd trigger the start of completely removing the monarchy.

In practice however, the pretence of having to seek the kings approval on everything does provide a safety net should some party get elected who decided to completely destroy the rule of law or government. For instance, if a UK party tried to act the was Trump has done this term, just enacting laws and decrees without any discussion, I'd hope the monarch would actually interfere.

But, yes, no system is foolproof. In India, the judiciary is superior over the parliament when it comes to lawmaking for the most part, while in Britain, parliament is supreme. But the equation of having monarchy in this scenario doesn't seem to excite confidence. At the same time, our system also doesn't bring any confidence to the common people at times
