Tried hosting a minecraft server on an 1 GB racknerd vps. Ram and swap usage went insane!

Hi @BasToTheMax -- Minecraft is notorious for tearing through RAM, especially once plugins/mods or a few players come into the picture. A 1 GB VPS will hit its ceiling fast -- I’d say 3 GB RAM or higher is a much safer starting point.

I’m sure there are ways to tune and optimize it too, but giving it more breathing room makes a world of difference.

Do you allow hosting apps which has Voice/video calling service in your VPS ?

Hi @hostkar -- as long as it’s legal usage, and isn’t violating any standard abuse terms, I don’t see why not :)

I was actually shocked when I first discovered you folks and I reached out to support to verify I could run an IRC client on it and they told me I could even run an ircd if I wanted!
I was also shocked with how fast support replied, even to this day with requesting ISO mounts.

    Hello,
I’m interested in the “2.5 GB KVM VPS – $18.66 per year” offer.
Before ordering, could you please confirm what the renewal price will be after 1 year (or after 2 years)?

Hi @nanni85 -- great question, and happy to clarify this for you :)

That 2.5 GB KVM VPS promo renews at the same $18.66/year rate, so rest assured you won't be looking at any surprise increases down the road.

If you end up grabbing one, feel free to post in this thread your order # for free double bandwidth as well -- we’ll take care of you :)

The only renewal rates that change are the giveaway VPS you might win in this thread. Those don't renew at $0 each year, sadly.

  • so this is my replacement cup for the one that was broken.. i will keep posting ugly cups until @dustinc is tired of it and annoyed enough that he simply sends me a nice RackNerd cup! =) this one won't last long, i already hear creaking sounds when i pick it up by the handle.. gotta use it as a glass, or afraid i'll burn myself or a cat on my lap..

what about having a few gigs of NVMe based SWAP file? does that help or not? just curious, as i've never tried minecraft hosting.. never got into it either.

would be cool but I don't see it from a business perspective. I can see things like the appetizers chef gives during BF where we get a free upgrade to a VPS.

P.S. That's also why I hope for flash sales a lot over giveaways, not only will RN get some $, we get even better deals! It's a win-win

Maybe not for a simple giveaway, but one of the prizes in the November month giveaway is a laptop. A simple/small VPS for ~10 years has to be less than that.

Yeah, I could see a limit like 10 years or at least some type of end date, I just mean the whole "indefinitely" isn't really an option. 6th place in the comment/pariticipation thing is a 4G VPS for 3 years plus a sweater. Using the pricing from the BF deals, that's basically $90 (3*30 to keep math simple) without the sweater cost. So yes, much cheaper than the laptop.

ok, friends. let's do a little brown-nosing session. well, maybe not exactly, but i just noticed something quite outstanding and would like to share.. here. where it's appropriate...

what do you like about racknerd the most?

    • for me it's the fact that since Registration Date of 07/28/2025 when I received my VPS, i haven't submitted a single support request.

i won't be naming names and pointing fingers, but quite a few of the providers here are literally plagued by my support requests. mostly it's server going offline and panel not loading to at least reboot or check via VNC. or ipv6 being lost all of a sudden. or this 1 provider i keep having to reinstall the OS. just recently a different provider in NL stopped being reachable from my dedicated servers in Germany, 1 IP block not rechable (to and from), another - easily reachable, although both servers were in the same building, i think.. and many many other problems and issues.. some i submit tickets every week.. it is soooo annoying..

so i really appreciate that in roughly 4 months i never needed to get help from RackNerd's staff & @dustinc ..

what have you got? i mean, this is not really sucking up or apple polishing, this is just something i thought worth sharing with others. it implies that their infrastructure is reliable and resilient.

my server has been up since the moment i brought it online. here's a munin chart to support my claim..

as mentioned before, winning literally any of the top prizes and having them turned into cash will give you a VPS that will last for decades.. I mean, a few years is good enough for me, but 10, 20 years? who even lives that long?

The only support tickets I've submitted over the years was to verify something that wasn't explicity stated in the AUP (irc, a lot of providers aren't a fan) and to have ISOs mounted to a VPS.

everyone's excited.. so far i haven't seen anything cheaper than 7. except this Turkish provider that basically had a promo period when they'd match the amount of $100+ that you'd top off the account with, so then later they had a half-price $12/year VPS, which I purchased several off, effectively marking the price down to $6/yr, or at least that's what it costed me after free $100 credit on my $100 investment, and half price sale.. but $5/yr - it's something else.. unless you mean 5EUR/yr which makes it more like $6..
