So, bring the pitchforks and fuel =)

Changes to Product Lifecycle Policy - we kinda did not have this publicly explained so here it is.

    https://host-c.com/knowledgebase/27/End-of-Life-EOL-Products.html

Those on EOL products should get this also by mail shortly, ( with some typos Stuart did, oh man, he really hates doing these stuff =) )

    What’s Changing:
Our products will now follow a standard lifecycle of approximately three (3) years. However, please note that in certain cases, the lifecycle may be shorter, particularly when the hardware underlying a product is decommissioned early or replaced with newer-generation equipment. This ensures that we continue to offer services aligned with evolving technologies and industry standards.

    What This Means for You:

Products marked as End-of-Life (EOL) will continue to function as-is, but they will no longer receive updates or enhancements.

Customers using EOL products are not required to migrate immediately but are encouraged to consider available upgrade options for continued support and performance.

In the event of decommissioning, you will be notified in advance and provided with options for migration or upgrade.

Cheers! ( be kind with the pitchforks :D )

EOL list it does not mean we will stop them tomorrow. :D

EOL means that they will not get any more development.

We will think of the upgrades for these services and contact all customers via mail for their options.

THX for the question @MaxTakeba , as it did clarify a few things.

Good that it can be upgraded, as I intend to keep my Host-C service as long as possible

Edit: Btw my services are not in the list as well. Phew!

  • host_chost_c Patron Provider, Top Host, Megathread Squad

also, as we upgrade the serves, we will keep the name of the service ( as creating new ones just makes a mess ) and we put the generation next to the naming ( G2, G3 and so on )

    Old: Dyson S - NVME Barebone VPS -> New: Dyson S - NVME Barebone VPS - G3
    Old: Kepler-70 - NVME VPS -> New: Kepler-70 - NVME VPS - G2

    and so on...

    Two questions:

    • In case of a decommission, if one wants to keep the current specs (and therefore is migrated to another physical server), will the price increase? (And if yes, would the price, sooner or later, increase for all products because they will somewhen be EOL?) (Of course, increasing prices can happen at any time because of power pricing or similar, but this would mean that it is basically guaranteed that the price will somewhen (in a few years) increase.)
    • Also in case of a decommission: what is with promo products (like the $7/year VPS), or if multiple servers have been merged into one, will they stay at the same price (or slightly higher) or increase a lot?

    Thanks!

it's a storage server.. who cares about upgrades. just replace the disk when it goes bad and it's all good.

    Thanks!

Thank you for your questions. Let me clarify how we currently handle this. Please note that this is not a final policy and may be refined before it’s officially published on the website.

    1. Decommissioning & Hardware Upgrades

In the event of hardware decommissioning, you’ll have two options:

    • Option A: Accept an upgrade offer to equivalent or better-performing hardware. We always aim to match (or exceed) the original CPU performance and specs.

    • Option B: If you choose not to continue, the service will be terminated at the end of the billing cycle. If your billing term extends more than 6 months into the future, we’ll give you 30 days to back up your data and refund the remaining value.

We do not maintain legacy hardware indefinitely (nor do I wish to), as this is neither technically nor economically viable—especially with today’s energy prices. Modern hardware offers vastly improved performance-per-watt and is far more efficient.

Price adjustments may occur, particularly when transitioning from older or deeply discounted services to newer platforms. That said, we aim for fairness. For example, if your current VPS has 4 vCPUs on a V4-generation CPU (say, 4x730 in Geekbench 6), we might migrate you to a Scale Gen 2 host and offer 3 vCPUs that score around 1050 each—so total performance stays roughly the same.

There will be no extra cost in such a case; only a short downtime for offline migration, as live migration across CPU generations is not recommended.

    2. Promotional Services (e.g., $7/year VPS)

For ultra-low-cost plans like the $7/year VPS, the same principles apply. We'll do our best to migrate you to an equivalent system based on total performance. There might be slight pricing adjustments depending on the situation, but nothing drastic—especially if you’re just moving to a newer platform with matched specs.

    3. Merged Services

If you previously had multiple VPSes merged into one - these are rare and handled individually. We’ll honor the combined value and specs of those services, and price adjustments (if any) will reflect the total resource value, not per-instance legacy pricing.

A Note on Decommissioning & Hardware Lifecycle

At this time, no immediate decommissioning is planned, as most services are still quite new—typically 1 to 1.5 years old. And for those who’ve been with us since the very early days, you’ve already received free upgrades to newer hardware, simply for sticking with us as a then-new "Romanian summer host" 😄 (as some called us—and maybe still do).

Still, I want to be clear: hardware refreshes will inevitably happen. Our philosophy is that a 3-year lifespan is fair for any hosting service. Beyond that, keeping outdated hardware online just doesn’t make sense—technically or financially.

I don’t want HOST-C to end up with 3–4 racks per location, running everything from Core 2 Duos to the latest AMD EPYC CPUs. That kind of fragmentation is not sustainable and does not reflect our growth strategy.

    Storage vs. Compute Services

Non-storage services will likely be upgraded more frequently than storage-focused ones.

Storage nodes—especially those on Scale Gen 2—are expected to remain in production for longer periods. These might get minor upgrades (like newer RAID controllers or larger drives), but the core platform will stay stable for years.( unless GB7 will happen and they will suck in performance :D )

    Final Thoughts

I wish for HOST-C to offer modern, clean, and reliable infrastructure and products. Even for storage services, we don't want to push outdated or underpowered solutions just to advertise “10TB of cheap storage.” - that does not work most of the times. We want to provide value—and value includes reliability, performance, and long-term viability.

That said, good hardware costs money, and occasional adjustments—whether in specs or pricing—may occur as we keep modernizing. ( shit ain't cheap )

So if you have any questions, shoot + pitchforks + gasoline. :D

Also, just to clarify again, we're not shutting down any EOL services right now. Everything stays as-is for the moment.

This post is simply meant to prepare you and be transparent about how things will be handled when the time comes to phase out older hardware or EOL products. We want everyone to be informed well in advance so there are no surprises.

I don't mind small price increases for better hardware and to cover higher operating costs, especially for a quality, trustworthy provider like Host-C. However, I'll have to see what my new price will be whenever they EOL either of the two storage VPSes I have. 40% may be too high of a pill unless the pot is significantly sweetened somehow.

I buy storage VPSes to keep them for several years (it's my 1 in the 3-2-1 rule) and don't plan to retire my Host-C VPSes for at least the rest of this decade (hopefully longer).
