Skype Alternatives

  • Teams is clunky and shi**T altogether. In free version you can't even manage your 'contacts' (add/delete), atleast when I tried 2 days back.

Telegram for FREE alternative seems good. Mostly adpoted by 'techy' people already so they don't need to learn/install a new IM chat app.

Plus, Telegram has some very neat Groups / Channels options. TG also has 'TOPICs' inside groups (like Slack) to organise chat within the same group of people for different tasks/projects and keep them organised.

  • Rocket chat is a good slack/teams-like replacement that can be hosted on most/any vps, and matrix is another in this category. There should still be a full-featured community edition that is free.

Depends on why you need to replace Skype. I haven't used it as a business communication tool for a very long time.

Teams is a very good shout, still allows you to talk to people in external organisations. Zoom works well too.

Cool thanks, ya definitely for business. After surveying most of our customers and vendors and teams seems Telegram is going to be most popular.

Telegrams can do the same things as Skype and more. We do not expand our support channel to Telegram because we are against using a channel for communication that cannot be directly connected to our CRM. As a result, you don't know who the Telegram user is, how they are connected to their billing account. Also, this is an insecure channel, and you can't safely send confidential access credentials to a customer or receive them from them.

Sending letters is only 1 euro. I just switched to that. Also sending voice messages thru USB sticks that way.

That's good sillycat, but you failed to mention how you send the USB?

    UPS, Fed Ex, DHL?

    haha classic.

Skype has feature to rent US/UK/AU number iirc. All usage and billing will be via Skype. This makes it easier to call local landline numbers especially government agencies.

Anyone know any service that offers the same thing?

That's a great questions, I have not found it yet......

This depends on how you use Skype - for public or internal communications. If it's for internal communications, there are many options. But if you want to continue communicating with your customers, then you should follow their preferences.

Both really, I guess the issue is what is the most popular on that everyone is on. But ya it does come down to what customers are asking for. thx

This depends on the location. I was surprised to find that in Azerbaijan, for example, Viber is more popular than any other messaging app. In Russia Viber is not popular at all. Telegram and WhatsApp only is popular.

yup seeing the same thing too.

It depends on what features you are looking for. From the open source world,

    • nextcloud which many use instead of sharepoint has their "Talk" client
    • Element has matured a lot; but has some hiccups in video from time to time

If you want some phone connectivity, I have used zadarma.com before; their prices for phone numbers and calling are quite reasonable.

Also, discord is quite good (although it is unreachable from some countries such as Turkey)

  • hard to find an alternative. maybe team app.

skype is solidly accepted as it has been part of ms account, and thus virtually installed with almost every desktop with windows. I cannot find one such app that can be used across the global, even in China mainland where the GFW blocks most social/communication software. It also helps those who want to dial from the desktop to a real phone user. It's free from pc to pc/app to app, and it's not free from pc to phone which helps it generate profits and to sustain.

Skype will no longer be available from May. I think they are also moving to a different platform.

It's too bad the mobile app for Matrix (Element, formerly Riot) is a pile of dog poop now. It just gets progressively worse every update.

    Thanks good to know.

Get a virtual american number (voip or esim) first then you're ready to go for Google voice.

    great work around.
