Sending letters is only 1 euro. I just switched to that. Also sending voice messages thru USB sticks that way.

That's good sillycat, but you failed to mention how you send the USB?

    UPS, Fed Ex, DHL?

Depends on why you need to replace Skype. I haven't used it as a business communication tool for a very long time.

Teams is a very good shout, still allows you to talk to people in external organisations. Zoom works well too.

Telegram/Discord might be the next option I suspect, since they at least allow usernames vs Whatsapp etc which are mobile# based.

Right, I don't really like to use Whatsapp you have to use your phone number. I downloaded Telegram, so far so good on that one. Thx.

This depends on how you use Skype - for public or internal communications. If it's for internal communications, there are many options. But if you want to continue communicating with your customers, then you should follow their preferences.

Both really, I guess the issue is what is the most popular on that everyone is on. But ya it does come down to what customers are asking for. thx

Skype has feature to rent US/UK/AU number iirc. All usage and billing will be via Skype. This makes it easier to call local landline numbers especially government agencies.

Anyone know any service that offers the same thing?

I am not looking for an alternative, but Telegram is a good option.

This depends on the location. I was surprised to find that in Azerbaijan, for example, Viber is more popular than any other messaging app. In Russia Viber is not popular at all. Telegram and WhatsApp only is popular.

Working internationally this is something that have been an issue for me for a long time. Americans use Whatsapp, which is basically non-existent in Scandinavia. Eastern Europe use Viber which the rest of the world hasn't even heard of. Asia uses stuff we cant even pronounce or type on our keyboards unless it's Wechat. Russia uses vk. Telegram and Signal is used pretty much everywhere but only by private persons, never by corporations. No matter what you choose you cant communicate with everyone.

I basically have presence on all of the different platforms but I've found that when in doubt use Zoom or Google Meet, they seem to work everywhere without problem. I also have a selfhosted Mattermost and Jitsi setup for those that are really paranoid and refuse to register anywhere or run anything proprietary.

Thank you very much, after researching some more seems like this is going to be the most workable solution.

  • There's all sorts of problems with Telegram and privacy. It's convenient but it's not as secure as they like to pretend: https://spectrum.ieee.org/telegram-security

If it's for internal communications then self-hosting Matrix Synapse is the best option. It's easy to deploy and you can use Authentik to control signups/logins and enforce password policies, 2FA etc: https://github.com/element-hq/synapse

If it's for external communications where you want to talk to random people without creating accounts then Signal is the only genuinely secure option these days: https://signal.org/

Zoom almost does everything that Skype did, but the free tier is lacking.

  • I still have a lot of contacts from Thailand on "Line" app. It's quite popular there, and in Japan.

It's too bad the mobile app for Matrix (Element, formerly Riot) is a pile of dog poop now. It just gets progressively worse every update.

Can’t get Google Voice for most people outside the USA though.

Get a virtual american number (voip or esim) first then you're ready to go for Google voice.
