I finally remembered today without a reminder

    Lol. That's a good sign.

That i will be the owner of a new nvme ssd soon? :D I hope so!

Me as well. Been saving money for an SSD for my PC/Media server.

My home server is still booting from HDDs because I'm lazy. It's frustrating if I need to reboot, otherwise, it works well enough.

Mine is an Android box
Tried using 2.5 inch 5400rpm drives for storage but the box can thandle it I guess.

Ah, mines just an old linux desktop with a bunch of random HDDs in it and a very messy docker setup.

I might have to move to something like that very soon. The Android box isnt exactly cutting it. But that's all I have for now.

It's all hardware that I've gathered for free, here and there, and it's surprisingly capable.

    Free?? How??!!

For starters, when the desktop was given to me, it was already almost 10 years old, and had many parts missing. It wasn't really worth anything, but it was a case, a motherboard, a CPU (Core i3-3225), PSU, etc to get me started.

Wish I had access to something like that as well. I love restoring stuff.

Yeah, but having an SSD boot drive is a nice bonus.

True that. I still use HDD everywhere but i do wish i had a SSD for booting only. Hence my hope to win one in the racknerd winter giveaway :)

Maybe you should start a PC parts recycle on one of your vps? At some point all old tech becomes almost cost equilivant. Maybe you can find people to trade old psu's for old cpus or old mother boards. People can work together to piece meal together a working box

Yeah. I have been guilty of it but its really hard to find an alternative. Like I have 4 PCs lying around. They should go to the electronic safe "dump". If i could though, i would just give it to 4 people in (insert undeveloped country) without even thinking twice. Its just really hard to do that which is a shame :(

Yeah, that's not a bad idea, but I think Dustin would have changed it if this method wasn't still working so well these last few years. The prizes are certainly more plentiful now, and that laptop definitely cost a lot more than my Xbox Series S! :D

What happens to old electronics there? People hoard them or sell them off for money?

Its actually not that easy to find old electronics here.. Like most of what i have is stuff that keeps getting handed down from generations or i tell my family i'll take it from them. You usually have to pay to recycle electronics

oh I see that's why they give out to other person In India instead you get paid so people generally sell out every inch of whatever they find 🤣🤣

Yeah here i think most people jsut hoard it but its because a lot of people dont need the older tech or its hard to find the people that do need it! Would be nice if it was easier to find someone that could use it. Dont want to pay the fee to recycle so it just gets hoarded

I mean a platform like specifically for this might be good but I think since there are already so many marketplaces here and there also fb marketplace so there is no need for such website

True. FAcebok market place exists but i've had trouble getting rid of old pc's there unless its going to clearly another techie person. I think a lot of people also want the hand holding of having something ready to go. You cant just give many something with an empty drive and say have at it
