One solution could be to push the backups instead of letting users pull them.
An interface to schedule backups where you can enter hostname, protocol (sftp/scp/S3/..), authentication, and when the backup is created it is pushed to the destination. This way you could easily limit it to reasonable values, like full backup once a month and one upload. Adding options like "re-upload" and stuff like that shouldn't be to difficult.

The more I look into the backups setup the more I think this is the preferred method.

We could script rclone pretty easily and then schedule auto pushes to remote buckets/mounts.

It's easier than us trying to figure out the best way to create multi TB zip files on the fly, or the mountain of CPU processing needed as we grow.

With an rclone setup we could just let things process when they process, given we'd aim for probably 1 backup push per week (though we probably want this tunable incase someones S3 bucket charges per ingest run).

Was for a couple minutes while we applied the latest Smartermail update :)

It addressed some issues people were having with EWS and hopefully with EM Client.

What resolution? It's fine for me but resolution wouldn't be an issue on my end.

Problem with OnlyOffice? I can create a spreadsheet few hours ago and saved the file but then after few hours my file appears to be blanked and now I can't even reach OnlyOffice anymore.

  • msattmsatt Member, Host Rep

Is onlyoffice integrated / broken ?
If I select New - Document - Spreadheet, enter a filename (Editor- OnlyOffice). I get a file created in filestore and a new tab opened to "This mail.mydomain.name. page can’t be found"
Does not matter if this is a Presentation or Document file.

Will look in a sec, maybe docker borked itself :( it runs separate of smartermail.

With the right documentation and a simple and clear interface I think it would be a good solution.

Also, alerts like "upload failed" via email, pushover, slack, ntfy or whatever must be available. This is one of those things that people tend to assume it works, just to find out it has failed when they need it.

If we do the backup controls inside the cranemail portal:

Two levels of backups control. At the 'whole account' level, as well as the 'per domain' level, that way you can override on a per domain basis. Does that mean we take 2 backups then? Don't know, maybe.

Doing it here though means that a resellers clients can't control their own backups. With that being said, the reseller can do 'all encompassing' backups in one shot if they so desire.

If we do the backup controls along side Smartermail:

Backup controls are done on a per domain basis (meaning a reseller would have to configure each domain one at a time)

Since it's running along side the smartermail box the primary domain admin could setup their own pushes.

    Por qué no los dos?

We do a bit of both. Make a cranemail option where it covers all of your domains, and move the per domain control out of cranemail's portal and along side SM.

Hello, is it against your TOS to use it for marketing? (of course the volume will be less than 600 mail/hour, with very low to non rebounds)

You'd have to share the emails with us but cold calls, scraping whois emails, etc, is going to get you canned quickly.

Some morning tweaks to the DNS page as requested:

Basically, we query the status of the DNS records to see what the status is. Results aren't cached outside of whatever our DNS servers are doing.

Now we can CNAME the us1.workspace.org? I mention that I am not an mail client at the moment, that's why I am asking.

Yep, its been fine. SSL's have been assigning just fine as well.

What other improvements have been made since the launch of this service?

Most of the changes have been done on the cranemail portal itself. Off the top of my head:

    • implemented DNS verification for new domains
    • implemented domain alias adding via DNS verification (helps bypass the MX checks smartermail does otherwise)
    • implemented managing email users (add/edit/delete)
    • allow a user to define the admin login & password at domain create time, as well as the ability to change it after the fact w/o a support ticket
    • DNS info page now does status checks w/ feedback
    • Self-serve Spamexperts cut over from Shared to Cranemail w/o staff intervention
    • File Storage & OnlyOffice toggles have been added for domains, as well as merged into the blesta & WHMCS modules
    • Non resellers can now set a different domain for their SSL instead of forcing mail.domain.tld every time

Those are the ones off the top of my head.

Reading back you can see a lot of chatter about user backups and how best to implement them.

    EDIT:

    • during domain creation a modal is now presented that shows the admin login/password, removing the silly 'create domain, view the password on another page' flow we had.

    One possible feature addition: Being able to login (and stay login) on multiple accounts on the webmail;
Similar to how you can have multiple accounts login on gmail

You're using direct MX records to the node, skipping spamexperts. By default Smartermail does greylisting which (by design) causes that delay.

Swap to SE, or disable greylisting.
