It did actually. Running a yabs now to see how it'll perform. Network is worse than before, not bad but it dropped a bit. Awaiting GB result.

Which vps did u actually get? I am wondering if this trick only works for specific type of vps.

The 1gb offer. Am on node 2.

I installed almalinux then installed Debian 12. Still disabled for me 😖

What if 1 physical core HT is shared by 32 vCores

Let's do a little math from providers perspective: minimizing $/GB RAM, as the offer is essentially ~$6/GB. The cheapest DDR5 currently (memory.net) costs about $300/64GB RDIMM, which is the sweet spot, as 128GB RDIMM costs $960!. The max number of RDIMM slots per socket is 16, which brings the max RAM per socket to 1TB. The 9534 has 64 physical cores with 128 hardware threads. Since they don't have any offer below 1GB, the max # of vcores is 1024 per socket, which brings you 1024/128 = 8 vcores per physical thread.

BTW, 9534 is about $3000, and 1TB RAM about $4800, if they have a 25-30% volume discount, their cost could be below $6000, which could mean material cost neutral already for the first year for this fantastic promotion/marketing effort.

ps — you chose not to include previous quotes so as to make context not obvious

  • Though I use Ubuntu/PopOS for desktop/laptops, AlmaLinux is my choice for servers, as it's half the iso size of Debian (2GB vs 4GB) is tuned for server by default. dnf is way faster than apt.

  • @vicaya said: dnf is way faster than apt

For installing perhaps, but for updates no as cleanups are time consuming on alma. Also depends on server

Just in-case if anyone's wondering. They block mailing ports permanently.

Normally we would bypass this through our mail filtering devices, you can check with our support directly via a ticket.

Hmm so are you saying you can unblock the mailing ports? Why was the support guy in the live chat so confident that it's permanently blocked and will not be unblocked even with a proper justification? Do note, i asked multiple times just to confirm he understands what i wrote, he repeated the same.

I have raised this to a senior tech to look into it first thing morning, as I do not want to share another incorrect answer but we indeed do have a mail filtering device perhaps what our support meant is that on the nodes we do block the mailing ports but did not make it clear that we can reroute the mailing through the device. If you have an open ticket, would be great to share the ticket ID with me in private as well over here.

    1. We offer a 14-day money-back guarantee. Any refund claim must be made within the first 14 days starting from the Service Commencement Date. This policy does not cover costs for any add-on packages, domain name registration, SSL certificates, and promo/discount offers.

  • dnf uses SQLite database for metadata making updates slower but offers better consistency. It also offers rollback capabilities and detailed transaction logs.

apt, on the other hand, relies on text based metadata file which are faster to parse.

Bit the bullet and bought a commodore. (14 days money back guarantee so trusting everything goes right)

Ticket #AM490557 for the mailing ports unblocking and server provisioning

    I don't think it's refundable

    1. We offer a 14-day money-back guarantee. Any refund claim must be made within the first 14 days starting from the Service Commencement Date. This policy does not cover costs for any add-on packages, domain name registration, SSL certificates, and promo/discount offers.

But they specifically mention "Money back guarantee within 14 days" in their offer here.

Yeah right. If in-case things go south, paypal dispute is always the last resort

Definitely. I'm in Dubai next week so could always ask nicely in person.

Aight, will give that a try.

    Did it work?

It did actually. Running a yabs now to see how it'll perform. Network is worse than before, not bad but it dropped a bit. Awaiting GB result.

My network speeds improved by changing the network card to Virtio from Intel.
