at the end i'll download all the images, zip them and upload them, maybe only on discord, cuz most likely there will be NSFW ones...

    Discord is such spyware https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/discord
I'm not sure people are aware of all the "fun" things Discord is doing to their users.

That's just scary. Just wondering if an OS like Graphene would be able to help me from such spywares built into apps or is the best option to not even install them?

  • Let's go and hype for a GA, resource GA? swag GA? or something even better?

BTW, @TrK have you jailbroken your iPad?

I am not into jail breaking my devices, for security reasons. I even don't root my android since last 4 years.

I used to like a decade ago. Not after I moved to Pixel. Might root only for the purpose of running Graphene.

Just don't see any value to it now, was kinda interesting and with all the fuss about magisk and what not, after that it just died down.

But, Graphene's different, from what I've heard. It does take the fun out of the phone if you use it mainly as a media consumption device. But, if you are privacy and security-centric, Graphene is the OS to have. Edward Snowden recommended it a few years ago.

isn't it just another AOSP fork i have seen too many tbh all promising this and that, but the security part of any AOSP fork is a joke unless you stopped using Android altogether, the only reason my main device is apple and secondary is android is due to this. Android isn't that secure imo and even though we know it we just can't have google disclose everything.

No, GrapheneOS is not "just another AOSP fork". Here is a great YouTube video (using a Privacy Front-end) if you want to have a better in-depth explaination of what GrapheneOS really is - I evolved from CopperheadOS, which was never an AOSP fork.

    https://invidious.nerdvpn.de/watch?v=WkQ_OCzuLNg

If my memory serves me right copperhead was also AOSP powered OS with some privacy tweaks and graphene made it to later stage with improvements over the time. But i feel like about it is just plainly if only if ubuntu touch could have gotten that much support and i might have started using that instead of any AOSP powered rom. Be it graphene or any other.

There are plenty of Linux-based phone OS, like PostmarketOS, Mobian, and as you mentioned Ubuntu Touch.

GrapheneOS provides you will "full disk encryption" using hardware and not just software like all the other phones out there today.

Full disk encryption isn't only available to graphene, it was introduced with google pixel 5(ig), and many other AOSP based roms also have the same disk encryption feature enabled cause the hardware was supported, it's kinda same a tpm no one knew untill MS forced it on everyone's head with bullet.

As I said to @noob404 above: "The Pixel phones are the only phones with the Titan M security chip which enables it to have that hardware device encryption - all other phones claiming encryption only do so on the sofware level. "

I only trust full disk encryption on devices & computers which I install the OS on - otherwise it's not to be trusted.

Never had the time to look into encryption. Is it really worth it, unless your phone/device has some hyper-confidential info?

Everyone has a different "threat model" and it all depends on what yours is, i.e. what adversaries are you protecting yourself and your data from?

Again makes sense. But, since the whole world is interconnected now, you can't see a potential adversary. So, I guess it's better to put some time into encryption. Prevention better than cure.

Imagine having your phone stolen without encryption and then the thief can do whatever he wants with your phone contact list or any other data on your phone such a Banking App, which most banks continue to move people towards using...

Yah. You got my attention and I am pretty concerned now. Maybe, time to look into it right away.

Same would apply to a laptop too

    Have you used Graphene before?

I've been daily driving it for 4 or 5 years now - it's great!

Oh wow, that's awesome. What would your review be? Like it's deGoogled and misses out on a lot of stuff. How was the migration?

I would highly recommend it to others who want the best privacy and security on an Android phone.

Every phone still does suffer from the "blackbox" which we can not see into - the phone antenna & modem. Only way to solve that is to not use a phone

Makes complete sense. BTW, did you read this - https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/gadgets-news/apples-new-patent-shows-airpods-with-brain-wave-detecting-sensors/articleshow/102278175.cms or know about this?

I had not heard about this, but I don't put much stock into anything Apple does as they are a major surveillance capitalist company who utilizes their user base as data livestock while selling them fake promises.

The funny thing is, if Apple is doing it, I can't even imagine what a surveillance hawk like CHina might be doing to the phones they sell worldwide.

And imagine what our little android is doing, eavesdropping on our every convo.

    Maybe yours is

Maybe everyone's unless you have it switched off, sometimes i feel like android was developed in that way only to hear everything even if your phones in pockets. I might be wrong here but who knows.

Use a faraday cage bag https://www.howtogeek.com/791386/what-is-a-faraday-bag-and-should-you-use-one/

    Or a microwave oven.

    From Wikipedia -

A microwave oven uses a partial Faraday shield (on five of its interior six sides) and a partial Faraday cage, consisting of a wire mesh, on the sixth side (the transparent window), to contain the electromagnetic energy within the oven and to protect the user from exposure to microwave radiation.

Sure, but part of having & wanting privacy in your life is controlling how, or even if, you feed these companies who are heavily profitting off of people who are completely unaware (or just plainly don't care). It would be one thing if they paid you for your data, but you get harvested without any compensation.

Well that's that we can't do anything about them and honestly i think we need stricter privacy protection laws and the right to know what are phones are transmitting over the internet and where to.

We need to do all of this - protect ourselves, have government aid us with stricter privacy protection laws to force companies to be transparent about what is being transmitted. Could also run Wireshark on your network to see data about what is being transmitted too.

The 5 Eyes prolly have the biggest database of everyone's data, more than corporates prolly.

Protecting yourself from Google, Apple, or Microsoft is totally different than doing so from intelligance agencies.

you speak up, you get banned

Didn't know this. A few months ago, learned about their Tencent and CCP connections, but, I thought those were disproven. I guess TG is a better option all IMs.

That's almost universal now. WhatsApp for personal and Discord for hobby-based communication.

That's just scary. Just wondering if an OS like Graphene would be able to help me from such spywares built into apps or is the best option to not even install them?

When you install an app, you're granting it certain permissions, such as accessing your contacts list or your text messages. GrapheneOS has a feature to install "sandboxes" to isolate certain "bad" apps from the rest of the phone, so you could install these into a sandbox. You are able to access a lot of these services thru a web browser, which is a little better, but the best solution is to not even install them.

Got it. Yah, aware of the idea behind sandboxes. Been using Sadboxed on Windows to run questionable software when I am too tired to spin a VM.

BitLocker enough for debloated Windows or do you recommend something else?

I would recommend not to use Windows and to instead setup & use LUKS on Linux. Lots of distros have the feature to select during the install process.

Can't travel with that microwave oven
