I'm in talks with @SGraf and @host_c , at least for backup space to keep the backups for a few months in case someone needs it.
Though usually if SGraf take over they will increase the price (Just look at MrVM/NatVM), so I dont have high hopes
Meh . You would always have a space Into the community. If someone has loved you Into the good times they must Accept that they can not hate you when you need some help when having bad time. Or at least being neutral meanwhile the storm.is.taken place. My personal opinión at least. Take care and Focus on the family
i calculated expenses for 1 node and that could be anywhere beyond $200+ including licences, firewalls, and extrnal backup storage. And Mike had 3 nodes.. so its was around in range of somewhere near $800-$1000 or bit more per month to pay rent/fees.
@MikePT
I though initally signed something 4 years back for a lifetime plan and hosted production sites, and services and support was all good.
Had it been a provider who offers lifetime only one single node/location while getting revenue flow from other node/locations without lifetime plans and/or adding VPS or other services that can compensate the $200 to $250 every month of the "lifetime node" then that would be a feasible operation for more longer time that we can call as "lifetime" like 10 years or beyond.
And my take on "lifetime" is like.. a web host should rather offer "long term plans" like $50 for every 5 years instead of lifetime. In this way, even if the host cloes a shop or long-term deal then customers will not find themselves been cheated or scam.
this thing we as a community should learn.
Thank you so much mate, I really appreciate the kind words.
Last month and this month are being way too rough, the job offers I get aren't enough for me to live, my rent itself is a lot of money, Portugal isn't a cheap country, used to be.
Well, to be fair, Mike said (and we all sort of knew) that the business wasn't profitable at the rate it was being run. If @SGraf takes over, services might be renewed at a very discounted rate or even free for the first year/months, so people have time to choose to stay, or move on. I fear, some poor souls won't check their emails or LES/LET all the time and will have a bad awakening when the lights go out. If @SGraf can at all contribute to keeping servers up, by all means, I'm sure many people will be grateful.
Some stuff is on a case by case basis. I'm against the notion of "its a guaranteed price increase". MrVM, was quite a loss when i acquired it. A year after taking it over, its no longer loosing money. Its not super profitable but sustainable and i am able to deploy hardware in new locations (recently: Frankfurt) to broaden the service offers and ensure that the project is going forward. I have two more locations in the works over the next few months.
Regarding MyW, i think the monthlies are looking realistic (and i do not have monthly plans for sitetide yet - so i am thinking that there wont be too many changes to that). Currently looking at what the options for the lifetime parts are.
Yes I had plans to bring other products for MyW, the revenue is bad there, and I accept I've done a big mistake. I had managed clients and a full-time job, always had a job to be fair, and it was covering everything. MyW was my biggest investment here, to try to get into the hosting industry.
Done a mistake, I'm only good in the industry for support and Sysadmin, other than that, I really don't fit managing a business.
this is why i want to give you more money! top class
no one should land in the situation to be unable to make rent. hope you get back on your feet quicker than your business' demise.
however "lifetime plans" have always been an undependable ponzi-ish model and should not have been advertised without solid finances and bcp to back it up.
that aside its important to literally keep your lights on and all the best on that. life's tough everywhere and hope this stirs some real entrepreneurial survivial spirit to get things sorted.
undisclosed time aka fake and gay.
I did some work in Lisbon a few years ago and could always find cheap enough appartments to rent for a few weeks. My work asked me to go to Lisbon again for a couple of days next month so I looked up the prices and I was shocked!!!
north or south?
Move to Spain IS AN option. Cheaper in some places than crazy Portugal rent. You could get a small apartment for cheapo or a small rent. Outside of the main cities true but for cheapo. You could get some work online so It IS another option to be considered. If you are looking for some advice i could get you more info just pm where to look etc regions Price ratio etc. Anyway you are a great person so i would repeat It you could have place Into the community so no worries about It.
I mean not to be mean but it's not that surprising. Web hosting is crowded, there wasn't anything majorly unique about the offerings and lifetime deals turned a lot of people off.
Good luck anyway, and I really mean that!
While I don't do lifetime offers, if anyone with Mike's shared plan (not reseller) wants a cheap alternative with Dallas and Germany locations, PM me proof you have an account and I'll give you a deal to bring my base 10GB NVMe SPanel plan under $10/y. Uptime is practically 100% for the years, the control panel experience is good, and there's no hard resource caps.
Lifetime plans are never going to make money, so you can't buy one and expect it to last forever, so you can't be mad at him for buying and it not lasting a decade. People have to pay bills, have to eat, and have to not go mentally insane from providing support and getting 5 cents in return. Anyone who's been here for years knows Mike is a respectable person (also because his name is Mike.)
I had several job offers, and applied to many, sadly, most think that Portugal is cheap, it's not, it hasn't been cheap for many years.
Around 6 years ago, rents: 500€
Right now: 1000€
Oh if that's in Lisbon, jumped from around 900€ to 1800€+
I'm a single father and have shared custody, no matter what, I'll never leave my kids, nor the shared custody.
Lesson learned, and I understand and agree with any criticism, I failed on everyone here.
wouldn't know how's the situation in Portugal but perhaps temporarily working in the food industry or any gigs for now can help with fast cash? might be the time to be open-minded until stability arrives.
any refugee deal for SG location?
As a suggestion, to be able to hire dedicated ip, to maintain the plans conditioned to have another service contracted with the company. To be able to contract more disk space... These are, from the outside and without evaluating costs, options for lifetime plans.
@mikept , life are stages, periods and learning, fall and get up again. You will count in the future, with all those who until the last moment we have supported in this community. Sad day and unfortunately, part of life and business. I hope that soon your situation will improve. Personally and then, in whatever you do.
Sorry to hear that .i was not aware of that
but well on the portuguése border You could find some bargain at less than 400 euros/monthly for a decent flat. So you could travel by car to Portugal in no time. Just saying to help you somehow. It IS Up to you.
Guys, he has been without a job for almost 2 months now. He has tried to approach everyone he knows for a job but isn't getting any good offers. I know he worked in a local restaurant a couple of days back just to make food. It's hard, he will bounce back.
someone help this man here; he deserves better.
I have no idea how you know that, but that's 100% true (expect it wasn't a restaurant, more like a pub). I tried to keep things online for as long as I could, and even my last month's money was spent on renewing servers.
I'm in touch with several people from the hosting industry, doing my best here.
There's something I learned recently: I forgot how to be humble, and I'm learning that again. I had a great salary for the past years, and very lucky to always have a job, even moving from one company to another as I had better offers, but I forgot how to be humble.
That's not an option sadly.
While I appreciate it, I'm a 34 year old adult, and I should be responsible for the mess I create.
The last job I had, I lost it due to my stupidity - losing the job, now MyW and everything because I just can't handle everything financially wise, no source of income.
I have a provider that occasionally helps with a few gigs, if it weren't them, MyW would have been gone sooner, and I wouldn't be able to eat. They are my superheros.
Sorry to hear about your situation. Just left you a DM.
Please let me know if I can be of any help!
