    From the TOS

    CPU Usage

    CPU cores on KVM VPS are shared among multiple VPSs. If your VPS is consistently maxing out one full core or more and impacting the performance of other client servers sharing the same host node, we may ask you to reduce your usage. Disruptive load may result in a reboot, shutdown, and/or suspension of the VPS regardless of the time lapse involved. 30% Average Usage should be fine. You can burst up to 100% for 10 minutes, every 24 hours.
    Resource Usage

    Any user may not:

    a) Use 100% or more of system resources for longer than 10 minutes.
    b) Run any gaming servers such as counter-strike, half-life, battlefield1942, etc
    c) Run TOR in any shape
    d) Streaming/Live Streaming

    Does that mean I can't use my personal Jellyfin installation even with direct play?

    How to keep up with the 30% average usage limit?

    I remember that the CPU cannot be occupied 100% for more than 10 minutes.

    But in fact it seems that different location nodes have different standards.
    In fact, when I compile nginx and mysql in various locations, the cpu usage is relatively high.
    However, only at IL and SJC locations, the system shuts down due to continued high occupancy, and has not yet been encountered at other locations.

    This also bothers me because when the usage is too high, the VPS is shut down than restarted.

    If you want to use Jellyfin, just make sure to turn off transcoding to avoid high CPU usage.

    This is why I like GreenCloud. Although their TOS is relatively strict, they will clearly list the specific content and follow the rules they set. And they will not impose excessive penalties for minor violations, just shutting down the VPS ( Of course it would be better if it restarts automatically)

    In a certain VPS provider, they announced very strict TOS, but they never implemented it. Even if the usage was high, they would not shut down the VPS. I once asked their customer service about the TOS standards, and they just replied don't be an asshole

    But once they notice you, they can use TOS rules at any time to shut down your service without refunding.

    Thanks. Yes, but sometimes I need to transcode some files.

    If anyone is experienced with cpulimit, will this chatgpt generated script work to keep the vps usage limited to the 30% average use or is there any better way?

    #!/bin/bash

    # Define the CPU limit percentage
    CPU_LIMIT=30

    while true; do
      # Get the system's current CPU usage
      CPU_USAGE=$(top -bn1 | grep "Cpu(s)" | awk '{print $2}' | awk -F. '{print $1}')

      # Check if the CPU usage exceeds the limit
      if [ "$CPU_USAGE" -gt "$CPU_LIMIT" ]; then
        # Find all running processes and limit them using cpulimit
        for PID in $(pgrep -d, -x .); do
          cpulimit -l $CPU_LIMIT -p $PID
        done
      fi

      # Sleep for a while before checking again (adjust as needed)
      sleep 5

    Here is another one with the burst limit. Will this work as intended?

    #!/bin/bash

    # Define the time window for the burst period in seconds (10 minutes)
    BURST_WINDOW=600
    # Define the maximum burst time allowed in seconds (24 hours)
    MAX_BURST_TIME=86400
    # Initialize variables to track burst and last burst time
    BURST_START=0
    LAST_BURST=0

    while true; do
      # Get the current time in seconds since midnight
      CURRENT_TIME=$(date -d "now" +%s)

      # Check if a new burst period can begin
      if ((CURRENT_TIME - LAST_BURST >= MAX_BURST_TIME)); then
        BURST_START=0
      fi

      # Check if a burst period is allowed
      if ((BURST_START == 0 || (CURRENT_TIME - BURST_START) <= BURST_WINDOW)); then
        # During the burst period, allow processes to use up to 100%
        CPU_LIMIT=100
        BURST_START=${BURST_START:-$CURRENT_TIME}
      else
        # Outside the burst period, limit the CPU usage to 30%
        CPU_LIMIT=30
      fi

      # Find all running processes and apply CPU limits using cpulimit
      for PID in $(pgrep -d, -x .); do
        cpulimit -l $CPU_LIMIT -p $PID
      done

      # Update the last burst time if a burst occurred
      if [ "$CPU_LIMIT" -eq 100 ]; then
        LAST_BURST=$CURRENT_TIME
      fi

      # Sleep for a while before checking again (adjust as needed)

    Do you mind enlightening me about that area, I am a hobbyist so I never really touched S3 as I see it is much more expensive than a storage VPS or a pcloud LTD in the long term.
    So I usually go with storage VPS and 2GB of ram and 1 core is usually enough for direct streaming with no encoding but I am a very light user and it is only for me, so never multiple streams at the same time.

  • @loay said: If anyone is experienced with cpulimit, will this chatgpt generated script work to keep the vps usage limited to the 30% average use or is there any better way?

    Using cgroups is better than cpulimit.
    As an example, run the following as root

    # Create a cgroup for limiting CPU usage
    cgcreate -g cpu:/cpulimited
    # Give a quota of 300000 out of 1000000, i.e. 30%
    cgset -r  cpu.cfs_quota_us=300000 cpulimited
    cgset -r cpu.cfs_period_us=1000000 cpulimited

    # Run a bunch of commands in the cgroup
    cgexec -g cpu:cpulimited command1
    cgexec -g cpu:cpulimited command2
    cgexec -g cpu:cpulimited command3
