Do providers normally charge to open ports?

AstroAstro Member

Got an email from virmach for a free migration. I was checking out the new site when I noticed they now charge for opening port 25 and even 80/443. Have never really seen a charge for that with other providers before.

  • If it's a NAT VPS you basically pay for an additional IP.

    It’s not. It has a ipv4 included.

  • What the hell... this is definitely not a usual practice. 80/443 should never be blocked, and most unblock 25 after proper justification.

    LOL @ "$25 Administration Fees".
    I wouldn't touch such provider with a ten-foot pole.

There's no mention of charging to open ports here - or my eyes aren't working :#
Or does it just come under "Admin fees"

@Astro you got a screen/paste of them wanting to charge you?

My understanding is that current customers will not be charged any fees to have open port 80/443.

So regarding port blocks, based on current feedback.

    • Existing customers should be exempt or have easily accessible self serve buttons to toggle the ports.
    • If we do decide to block by default, we'll send out an announcement email and 7 day notice, and describe how to use the above feature.
    • No additional fee for existing customers.
  • no should be included

  • Maybe a way to mitigate potential abuse on all those idle boxes with mail relays and wordpresses
    with weak/default passwords from copy+pasted tutorials :)

The provider should not set up the firewalls blocking ports. If they do, then they should open the ports on receiving tickets without extra charges. If they charge for this, you should look for another provider.

  • Maybe Virmach is finally opening up a China location and the $5 would cover the admin fee for reviewing ICP recordals 😆

    Enable Webhost (Port 80/443)
    $5.00 USD One Time

    lol :D

And now imagine that you're not from LET but ordinary customer who purchased vps from this random hosting company just to find out that basic functionality is crippled and you can't host a website without additional payment :)

Now pay to unblock ssh port.

  • Then another for udp 53.. and so on..

If they're charging fees to open port 80 or 443, then shame on them. If they're charging fees to open port 25, that's fine.

  • I can't believe it's true, but virmach offers powerful hardware at a bargain price

what in the actual summerhost we got going on here....

    the end is nigh.

  • yoursunnyyoursunny Member, IPv6 Advocate

yoursunny summer host will never charge for opening ports on our IPv9 service, because IPv9 doesn't have the concept of ports to begin with.
Instead of ports, you just use a different address for each service.
It's same as telephone: you dial a different extension number for each desk.

To deal with VirMach, customers can download cloudflared to host websites via Argo Tunnel.
The web server makes outgoing connections to Cloudflare network, authenticated via certificates.
This requires neither an open port nor a public IP address.

If virmach decided to gatekeep even most basic functionality, we're doomed then.

    Plane tickets aren’t free.

Business class is approximately 1/4 of your userbase worth of opening port 443, I reckon.

Understandable, Touching someone with a ten-foot pole might be hard. especially if the pole is made of metal and is thick. Could be heavy and not worth the effort when you can easily touch them using your hands.

    Is it even true ?
I believe this host has tons of customers .

Never seen that, though I've definitely seen a ticket required to open port 25. But, TBH, I don't hate the idea, if it means that the IP range will be cleaner from fewer spammers and clueless people who opened relaying.

    That's ridiculous.
    I don't think I've ever seen a provider charge to unblock 80 and 443.
What is it even supposed to achieve?
If it's to combat spammers/fraudsters, they'll just run HTTP servers on different ports and put the port in their links.

Unless they want everyone to use CloudFlare?
