Like the victims in the 1999 Buynaksk, Moscow and Volgodonsk bombings? Ha.
No state should fear end-to-end encryption. Terrorism has repeatedly been used as a justification to curtail civil liberties in the West and in other places as well, and I think it's wrong. Even with that said, though, no Western states have pursued ridiculously draconian measures like arbitrarily banning large swathes of the internet.
Also, statements like these are absurd and specious rebuttals: "telegram is closely linked to terrorism" and "almost always mobile phones with telegram are found". Especially coming from someone who argued "Lots of echo chamber noise but very poor on the side of evidence."
I used to know people that were dispatched to "fix" the Chernobyl clusterfuck and are sadly no longer around... You should probably refrain from using it in a statement like the above because it is not a thing to joke about.
Post aged too much. Cant edit now.
Why are they super-concerned with this app but not say Whatsapp? It has end-to-end encryption too, does it not? Is it a simple case of usage, I mean, because Russians tend to use Telegram and not Whatsapp etc?
AFAIK, there are much more WhatsApp users in Russian than those of Telegram. Perhaps the true reason of such relentless, illogical and aggressive banning of millions unrelated IPs is the attitude of Telegram's owner.
I actually don't know anyone that regularly uses Telegram. Usually VK, Facebook, or Whatsapp.
They just unblocked about 3.2M IPs:
They should just block 0.0.0.0/0.
What a stupidity towards their citizens. A stupid, childish behaviour to cause pressure on trying to obtain any information they want. Again, citizens are the ones paying for it.
If I'm not mistaken, Telegram was created by Pavel Durov, who had also created VKontakte. If I'm again not mistaken, the government pretty much pressured him into giving up control of VK and basically took his company. I think he moved abroad and perhaps Telegram's conception has a little anti-Russian sentiment. But in any case it's still weird for Russian authorities to act vindictively when there are plethora other apps that could easily replace Telegram, and they are available to use. Also potentially, such other apps may have American backdoors, whereas probably Telegram is more independent (purely speculating here).
Russian television station airs subversive ad supporting Telegram. This is so funny But I wonder if anyone got fired, since all high-profile media and especially TV channels can operate only if implicitly Kremlin-approved in Russia.
Meanwhile, today there is a mass protest in Moscow:
https://meduza.io/shapito/2018/04/30/miting-v-zaschitu-telegram-fotografii-obnovlyaetsya
26 international human rights, media and Internet freedom organisations, strongly condemn the attempts by the Russian Federation to block the Internet messaging service Telegram
Seems like Gandalf is also protesting
Are you sure they weren't on a pro-Russia/pro-Putin March?
Yes, sure. It's this event: http://digitalresistance.moscow/ On the 1st photo a banner they hold up says "The Internet must be Free" (as in freedom), on 2nd one there's a print saying "Hands off the Internet". And a paper airplane is the Telegram mascot.
Heh, my first thought was RMS.
Exactly my thought when I saw this earlier, lol.
Means you've got good taste :P
What do those green and black flags mean and who do they represent?
I've seen them in my country also, among all the other flags, representing various factions of 'far libertarian', or whatever they are - slaves anyhow, when sorosoids took over.
I think this isn't actually about the blocked internet subnets. I smell something else here, i've smelt before.
Don't get me wrong, i don't like blocking internet access, i know that you technically can't restrict people, only guide them if you're cunning enough, but i also most strongly believe that no human should be a slave to other human. The 'new world order' is part of making a great cheap replaceable and gullible work and spending live force of humans which is easy to guide and homogenous and weak enough to not rise above the average and overthrow the leader away.
It's like herding cattle, have them work for you and sell them iPhones, fast food and bottled water, while still being in debt to you a few generations after.
Not meaning to spoil the party but WHERE ARE THE BRUTAL COPS?
Based on what I see there are a couple of thousand people protesting largely peacefully and there are no evil Putin dictator cops to be seen brutally hitting the protestors.
Just to be sure I went to have a look at their oh so evil Putin dictator controlled and suppressed media and found a news report with quite similar pictures in RT or Sputnik.
So not only is there the freedom to peacefully protest with thousands on the streets but the state media even report about it.
Darn that Putin really is one smart dictator to run a dictatorship with all the elements of a free democracy!
Meanwhile the telegram guy has been starting to communicate with the russian authorities and his lawyers who were first ordered to not go to the court hearing to not "dignify" it are now appealing and working with the courts.
Seems my first reaction was correct. Lots of noise, move on nothing much to see here.

I thought about that, most likely that's it, but what puzzles me is these are with the line cut in the middle into two rectangles, not diagonally cut into two triangles.
In Russia's case it's "Association for People's Resistance": https://vk.com/as_nar
Learned about them just now researching for your question. Seems pro-freedom and pro-democracy, with some socialism and traditionalism thrown in.
I'm not sure if those colors would represent the same organisation in your country.
This was an event that was permitted by the authorities, so police was there only setting up security checkpoints and metal detectors. On 5th May there's going to be another protest, and at least in Moscow it was denied the location where they plan to hold it (anyway), so might be not as peaceful that time.
I wouldn't waste so much words on this guy. His writing style alone disqualifies him.
Well I guess the Moscow cops will be less nice then. Just like their colleagues in most other countries too. Just remember G20, it was almost war like on the streets.
You are right and I apologize but my brain has enough load with programming languages and work so I am somewhat sloppy with the english grammar. Be a bit generous, english isn't my native language. I'll try to do a bit better and to sprinkle some more commas and dots.
It's not the grammer (which i am probably bad enough at myself). It's the high level of sarcasm which tends to easily escalate such topics.

Account created a week ago and posts with strong political messages? Is the obvious too obvious?
Yes, it's called an ad hominem attack.
Amazing. I even clearly said what drove me. I don't like anti-whomever-hype and what I said was not political and not taking this or that parties or countries side but basically the line "Let's not blow things up out of proportion".
If there is a rule that stipulates that only members which are here for some time X I'm sorry I didn't know that. Please point me to said rule. I'm certainly not here to break rules or to create trouble.
As soon as something isn't purely technical pretty much everything one says or does is political in some way. Hell, even a purely technical context can get a political angle just by the way technology is applied. So even if you'd seriously just pushing a worldview of "things-aren't-half-as-bad" it's political. Besides i am not buying that. You have bias. Everyone has bias. Besides if you want to be taken seriously you should drop the sarcasm and the polemics since even if you really don't notice this is very political and you are dancing on a powder keg while playing with matches.
Well political discussions are somewhat frowned upon here. This thread seems have been tolerated since you can't really seperate the technical from the political part. Still please understand that a new member who starts off by joining such discussion and throwing around stuff that could be seen as flame bait is going to raise some eyebrows.
I don't know if others can see those details on my users page but I just checked and found that I did NOT start in this discussion. My first comments were all in other and technical threads. The same is true for the majority of my comments.
I find it strange to be repeatedly criticized based on subjective impressions like being subjectively judged as sarcastic or on having started off by joining a political discussion which are factually false.
Again, if newcomers have to stick to certain special rules I will comply without any debate, just point me at those rules. Also note that I have been polite and unlike you did not attack or suspect anyone here of having evil intentions.
I will leave this strange thread now because I've had enough of those weird arbitrary allegations and of what seems to be a guilty until proven innocent attitude of some members here. Strange welcome culture you have here in this community.
